I generally lean towawards very soft and subtle calling but if they aren't talking don't be afraid to hit them with loud aggressive calling. I was hunting public land the first week in NY and hadn't heard a thing all morning. Around 11a I was in an area where i thought there would be a bird and still not a gobble. Finally I cut as loud and hard as I could on a mouth call, first series nothing but the second time I shook a gobble out of him and was able to get set up and work him. Lucky for him he came strutting in at 12:05p and his like was spared.

I haven't seen a lot of guys out. I have a lot of friends down South where they've had all day turkey hunting for a long time and they still knock the snot out of the birds every year. Only thing I wish they would have done is make it so it ends at 7p in order to discourage the roost shooters.

I've only hunted Ny one day so far and Pa everyday and they aren't gobbling great anywhere. I know here in Pa they stayed in their winter flocks very late this spring and suspect they are just really henned up and concentrated in specific areas. If you aren't where all the birds are you aren't hearing much. The hens are starting to lay here and its only going to get better. Hang in there and keep grinding, you'll get into them.

Hiked waaaaay back in on PA gamelands yesterday morning and heard nothing off the roost. Did some running and gunning and finally struck a bird at 10am. Two came in and only one left. He had a neat beard, it spiraled completely around itself, never shot one like that before. Only hunted NY on the opener and it was slow until 10am and then we got on a few but couldnt close the deal. Hope to get back up there this week.

Been scouting hard in Pa and NY. They are henned up as expected this time of year. Just this week I have been seeing hens by themselves, away from the flock. It's on, starting in Pa on Saturday and then headed to NY on Sunday.

Gonna be raining here in Pa. Looking forward to getting out and showing a kid what turkey hunting is all about.

3in Hevi Shot Magnum Blend/ Primos Jellyhead choke out of a Bennelli Nova. It patterns well way past 40 yds but i don't shoot any further than 40yds. Turkey hunting has and will always be a 40yds and in sport to me. My backup gun is a Remington 870, Remington Extra full choke and Federal Flite control #5's. I used that set up for years, had to retire it as it had to many "kill" notches in the stock

I think it's a great idea and i'll be taking a friends son here in Pa on Saturday. Neither of his parents hunt so I feel it's a great oppurtunity to introduce someone to the great sport of turkey hunting. If he doesn't end up hunting in the future thats fine but maybe he'll at least remeber it when he is old enough to vote

I hunt turkeys Spring and Fall so im always scouting. Got a pile of them located in PA and few on a piece I hunt in NY. Last spring I had a bunch located before season but it was the worst season i've ever had for hearing birds gobble in both Pa and Ny.

Yeah, one is a wingbone and the other is a blackwood/ivory trumpet call.

the calls in your vest. First off, howdy to everyone. I was born and raised in Tioga county NY but now live in Northeast Pa. I hunt quite a bit in NY, primarily in the Catskills and Chenango County. Anyhow, I found a kid to take on the youth hunt in Pa this Saturday and took a pic as I was packing up my vest tonight.
