No heat other than the wood stove. The wood stove is a 55 Gallon drum stove kit. It holds enough wood to keep the whole cabin more than wam enough all night long. We restock it before we leave for the woods and the house is warm when we get back. There is no indoor plumbing. There is a bathroom petitioned off and there is a sink and shower that drain out to the ground outside. We use a camping portable hot shower to warm the water and a camp potty. There is a kitchen sink that also drains to the ground outside. we bring water in from a public well 3 miles away.

My hunting partner and I have decided to sell our camp to buy a larger one. We have for sale our hunting camp. It's a cabin with Xlarge living room, Xlarge kitchen and Xlarge loft. We sleep 6 in the loft with room for at least 2-4 more in the living room. The cabin has all new board and batting siding, new windows, new front door, new roof and re-enforced footings. All work was completed in the spring of 2013. This is a dry cabin with 220 electrical service. Heat is supplied by a wood burning stove. Included is an electric stove for cooking and a fridge. We may be even leaving some of the furniture behind if the buyer would be interested. The cabin sits on 5 acres of land adjacent to 500 acres of NYC Public Land. Over the last 3 years we have taken a 6 pointer, 2 bear and numerous doe off of the adjacent DEP property. We have spotted 2 additional bear after harvesting the first 2. All interested parties should reply to this post or send me a personal message.

First Bow morning of the season for me. So glad I braved the weather forecast. Turned in to a decent morning. A little breezy but no rain.

Thanks! After hunting for 30 years, this was, by far, my most memorable experience. Even more exciting than my own first harvest.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

My son shot this bear last week. I got to watch the whole thing from my tree stand. While he was on the ground 20 feet away. I was very proud. He is only 15 years old and this was his first big game kill. He took the time to wait to make sure it was alone and then the bear winded him and bolted. He hit the bear with the first shot while it was on a full run. He is going to be a great hunter.

Living in Long Island and working and doing business in NYC I can tell you that most law enforcement agents have the same mentality that I posted earlier. They issue summonses that they are either unsure of or they know are unwarranted. In the long run it is cheaper and not worth the cost of losing a days pay to fight tickets and summonses even though we know we can beat them. The dabbling in grey areas is being done by the ENCON officers.

There is no reason to re-write game laws that have been in place and have worked for many years. The ENCON officers need to stop making assumptions about "intent", they need to stop abusing their authority. I was once told by a DEC officer that i could either plead guilty and pay my fine or plead not guilty and get a lawyer to fight my case. They realize that it is cheaper and easier for us to pay our fines than to fight them.....By the way I met the court justice who handled my case the following weekend while in the woods hunting....He apoligized for issuing the fine. He said he knew the DEC had a bogus case but if he does not hand out the fines he gets complaints from the DEC. The fine was for hunting over bait and salt on leased land. We had tresspassig issues and had no idea this stuff was there. This was opening morning. Apparantly, some tresspassers were planning on hunting during the week as we were pretty much weekend warriors at the time.

My friend and I are considering purchasing some land with a small cabin. The cabin has electricity but no water or septic. I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with composting and/or incinerating toilets. i also heard that some incinerating systems will alos handle gray and black water. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mentoring programs are great but there are the liabilities. I don't think that the Gander's and Dicks are all that concerned with hunter numbers. While the numbers may be on the decline in NY they must be on the increase somewhere. These stores used to be catalog outfitters. Now they are opening stores all over the country. I believe each and everyone of us owes it to this sport to initiate one person. Bring that person into our community. If everyone who is brought into the sport pays it forward. The number will grow and we can sustain healthy hunter numbers.

yes i would agree with Steve863 it will take some work and i would not pass up too many deer unless you are willing to take a chance that the deer you are passing up is the last you'll see for the season. Keep in mind that sometimes being successful in an area that requires hard work can be a lot more rewarding than hunting in an area where there are enough deer that hunters are passing them up. I left that area years ago because I wanted to hunt where there were more and bigger bucks. I am back there this year and so far I am enjoying the season better than i have in many years. Good Luck to you....If your looking for someplace to eat, The Hitching Post Inn on Rt 23 has decent food at a reasonable price.

I have been hunting in Prattsville, Grand Gorge and Roxbury on and off over the last 27 years. I have returned there this year. I have personally taken quite a few small bucks in that area....spikes, 4's, and a small six. My family however has taken nice 7's 8's and even a 12. The 12 was about 30 years ago though. I have been scouting since September and got a trail cam pic of a nice 6 pointer. I have been bow hunting since opening day and finally had an active weekend. Saw four doe and a monster coyote. There is plenty of bear sign up there and bear have been taken in that area. As far as I know that area is 4R but check your map I could be wrong. Good luck with the house and land. That is a great area to have a place. When i am ready hopefully another year or 2 that will be my target location.......Oh and by the way I've never been to George's Gun Shop but the mountain lion claims have been around for about 20 years.....scaredthe hell out of me when I was a kid...LOL

I have been using red & black Woolrich for 25 years. For the first 10 years of that hunted from the ground with much success. I was actually in the market to replace my suit because i have put on some weight. You can't find them amywhere at all. If anyone knows where they are still available please let us know. i would also like to get my son a Woolrich suit. He will be starting to come with me this year.
