  1. I understand people have opinions, however when I bow hunt yes I do hold a bow out... BUT, you have to hold the forearm of a crossbow out from you body too! Yes like a firearm, and weight on the front with the limbs (where they) are puts more weight out front, than a bow. With a bow you are pulling back which distributes the weight better.
  2. Then there is the old argument, crossbows have been around a lot longer than a rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, and the modern compound bow! As for primitive I'd have to say unless you use a traditional bow, a traditional crossbow is as primitive as you get, unless you want to use a stone or spear! Once you step up to a compound bow you have, in my opinion made a modern crossbow, just it's equivalent. Seriously, both have, sighting systems (pins/recticals, some are illuminated) , both use modern broad heads, triggers (mechanical releases), a lot of compound bows have 80% or more let-off. So the only real difference is you have to (or can) pre-draw the string/cables. Archers who are competent, and practice a lot, have the same range. Oh and a crossbow is easier to "master" than a compound bow, which makes for more accurate/lethal hits with a bit less practice. And we all know accuracy, make for a humane kill.... why the arguement? .
  3. And the late Muzzleloader/archery season too! With a Muzzleloader stamp.
  4. Sadly Suilleabhain, They don't even allow for the elderly that can't pull a bow back due to age the choice to use one in archery season, and here is their stand on using one for the handicapped during archery season Question: I have a note from my doctor regarding an injury that prevents me from using a regular bow. May I use a crossbow during the early bowhunting seasons? Answer: No. The new law does not allow a hunter with disabilities (temporary or permanent) to use a crossbow during any bowhunting season. Hunters with physical disabilities should refer to the Modified Longbow Authorization for more information.
  5. Some bows you can use a "cocker", basically a hand crank, mine I use a rope cocker which wraps around the stock and hooks onto the string then you pull it back. The rope cocker cuts down the force by half I believe. It's not bad at all, and in order to get consistant groupings, an aid is much better, as it' will pull consistantly, where as by hand you'd have a hell of a time pulling both sides evenly... not only that but some xbows require you to use them... Just imagine your fingers trying to pull back 175 lbs, with enough room for you fingers to get it in the cocked position. The NY bowhunters Assoc. is raising all kinds of hell, but their is some squabbling among their ranks too! Think about it how many of them actually use traditional equipment. They are use compound bows with illuminated reticles (scope), mechanical releases (trigger), range finders, scent control, the latest camo. modern broadheads, high let-off bows.... Just how traditional are they? The only difference is a xbow is pre-drawn. Oh, and it takes less effort to be much more accurate. So with less effort you more humanely kill... That's just terrible...LOL!
  6. Need to find a new archery shop or range, a crossbow doesn't have any more power than a high dollar modern compound bow. The ignorance is a disgrace! They both can shoot up to 400 fps, and have well over 100 ft/lbs.

  8. For all your crossbow question's, or atleast most of them refer to this NY DEC website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html
  9. NY approved it from Feb 2011 till Dec 2012, then it's up for them to "renew" it. So for now we have this year and next year. Question: When does the new law go in effect? Answer: The changes went into effect on February 1, 2011. This means that a licensed hunter can use a crossbow during the 2011 and 2012 big game hunting seasons. The law will expire on December 31, 2012, unless the Legislature and Governor decide to extend it.
  10. I got my crossbow a couple weeks ago, a Barnett Hellcat from Dick's, 175lb, 350fps, 116ft/lbs I think I'm gonna love this thing. 2 inch groups off hand at 35 yards, after only a couple of shots sighting in!

7R x 2 for me 7R X 1 for my sister, her second year hunting, Last year I only got one 7S, and she got 2 7S her very first year hunting!
  12. What are you seeing that doesn't look right? My biggest question is weather it actually took down the deer, or if the deer was placed there.
  13. The reason I purchased it mostly was for the speed breach, and the ability to change it to just about any caliber made. I used my cousins muzzleloader two years ago ( not sure what brand/model), and boy was it a pain in the butt to remove and replace the breech plug. I fought that thing for 20 minutes trying to push in a spring while trying to thread it back on... worrying the whole time I'd strip out the threads. So when I saw the speed breech, to me it was a no brainer.
  14. Sorry about the repost, for some reason, I thought I hit the backspace instead of enter, and when I refreshed the page it didn't show up. Speaking of which is it possible to remove a post?
  15. Is there a better muzzleloader than the encore pro hunter, and if so why is it better. I'm not trying to start a fight, just curious as to any newer innovations.
  16. Is there a better muzzleloader than the TC Encore Pro Hunter? And if so why? I'm not trying to start any fights, Just curious as to any newer better innovations.
  17. 1990 Lowe Deep Vee aluminum boat.. It has a 1978 150hp Johnson outboard short shaft engine. The boat needs a little work.. first it needs a prop, batteries. The boat was designed for a long shaft... so i "modified' the back to accept the shorter shaft.. not pretty. But it works great.. I have the boat titled and up to date NY registration...but the trailer (galvanized) only comes with a California registration . I may be willing to part the boat and motor out. $800/ motor, $600/ boat and trailer. I don't have a truck anymore so all transportation is up to the buyer. I can send pics by request, in the next few days Tim M. 607 221 2397
  18. 80 Acres, don't care how much you pay that's your business, and I guess the mentality comes from my own pride, morals and respect of someone else's property.
  19. Food and Feeding Research in the late 1970s found that white-tailed deer, rabbit, and hare are the most common items in the diet of bobcat in New York. They eat deer more often during the winter than other times of the year and will store or cache carcasses for future use. Deer can be a valuable prey item in areas of deep snow because one carcass can last for several weeks. Opportunistic prey items include birds, squirrels, meadow voles, and road kill. According to NY DEC they are certainly on their menu. Looking at the second pic, its mouth is open and possibly winded. Add that to the fact that the pics are spaced so far apart, their is no telling what really happened. But I think you are right the coyotes will clean it up. Bigger question in what shape was the deer in when he arrived to get the pics? Not much info on it to go by.
  20. " just happens to own the land" I pretty sure he doesn't just "happen" to own the land that you covet! It's his property, and his life, I say give the man some respect. If you want to spot deer I think you ought to do it on public land, your land, or land that you actually have the right to hunt.
  21. "However, as long as it is legal I support a law abiding citizen's RIGHT to do it, without being harrassed by some overzealous moron who just happens to own the land that the terrible, offending light beams are passing over." I have something about people invading my space, and privacy. I try to treat others as they treat me, so therefore I wouldn't want anyone "spying/scoping out my property. I'd consider that just plain freaking rude, and inconsiderate. As far as being legal, that's why we have a government continually pass laws, so people that haven't got any morals, can read a law that tells them right from wrong. I support anyone hunting legally, whatever their "weapon" of choice, whatever their prey, but sometimes you just have to use common sense.
  22. Yeah, That is a big ol puddy tat. I don't think I'd wanna step too close when it was feeding.
  23. Well someone has some nice trail-cam pics of a bobcat with a deer down on the news. No idea if it took it down, but I'm assuming that if it was caught on camera, it wouldn't be a hunter kill... and yet no frames of it actually killing, or dragging the deer, what do you think? Did they just leave those pics out? http://www.wbng.com/younews/133613418.html?img=1&mg=t
  24. I don't spot period. If I ever felt the need too I certainly wouldn't spot private land that i'm not allowed to hunt anymore than I'd peek in a house's window. That's why you get your butt out and do serious scouting, on land you have the right to hunt.
  25. My appologies for the goofy question, I guess it would only be narrowed down too... In the late season would I check the bowhunting or muzzleloader, with a broadhead kill
