  2. I believe Mr Wehle nailed it all with that single statement, in my view on all that we do with dogs. With the passage of time comes loss. Enjoy your time with your dogs, it's way too short.
  3. NAVHDA is the Mecca for us journeying dog folk. They'll help you train and get you on the right path. Testing is a disease that gets ya later on after you have been totally absorbed in all the success. I've been a LIFE MEMBER since the 90's and I've run and trained a multitude of dogs through the entire system including the Invitational. It is a great organization and is chock full of great folks. great start... Enjoy...
  4. Raising birds is relatively easy, however, integrating them into the wild is, as my mixed metaphor friend would say " that's a horse of a different feather". Getting pen raised birds to stick, released into the wild, is tougher than chinese arithmetic. What we do here on the Ponderosa (the place I live, work, and train) is we put out johnny huts for quail, a recall "barracks" for safe lodging of birds, away from the multitude of predators. Pheasant need a bit more cover, water, several food sources, and they need high cover to escape and evade all the critters that want to eat em. Corn fields are a roosters best friend. Tall structure and thick cover to hide em away from all that want em for supper. Larger johnny huts do work for pheasant but regular visits are required to make sure all is well. Predators...Owls are voracious for pheasant, raccoons decimate the nests by eating the fresh laid eggs, even possum do damage to an established nest. I don't know of a single property owner upstate who doesn't have issues with Coyotes, so that's an issue all by itself. Here on Long Island we had issues with fox a few years back, but mange and a few other maladies did in the populations. -don't mean to discourage you, in fact, with the proper care and attention you CAN have wild birds in your woods, just takes time and patience.
  5. The GWP Breeder? Is that Bruce? He looks like a fella I know. The fella in the pix...
  6. YEP, that's a brandy new chapter with some real nice folks, say hi to Evelyn and Jeff for me (Large & Small Munsterlanders), tell em Hoss says hello, I'm in the Hudson Valley Chapter, helped start the Rock Tavern Chapter a few eons ago, and used to train with the Del Val folks years ago.
  7. Greetings- Nice Wire, with which NAVHDA Chapter do you train? Hudson Valley? Rock Tavern? Adirondacks? Southern Tier? Del Val? Hoss
  8. -that shot is actually one from my files taken in (YIPEs) New Hampshire two years ago....we knocked em dead that year, gotta dig for the more "verifiable" NY grouse pix, or folks can just wait a few months and I'll get some fresh NY shots...! The season is so close I can taste the grouse now....can't wait, best of luck to all this season-shoot straight Hoss
  9. 1996 FORD F350 powerstroke 7.3 Diesel 4X4, 5speed, pulls my gooseneck horse trailer like nothing... gets 20 MPG unloaded highway gotta love that! Hoss
  10. Speonk, Long Island NY is home base, on a 200 acre upland preserve. We have hunted Hornby, Campbell, Margretsville, Morris, and points further North to good success.(whitetail)
  11. Cool stuff....I have always stuffed a small pocket sized notebook in my game pouch, or shell pouch while bird hunting over my pointing dogs. When there is a lull in the action, or when we return to the dog trailer, we'd jott down a few lines on what transpired or just random related thoughts jogged loose while trekking in the Great North Woods. My purpose is a bit selfish though, I'm putting together a book of training and hunting anecdotes we've experienced over the many years working behind bird dogs. Short stories, some serious, some hilarious happening over the years hunting in upland splendor of the NE.
  12. Yeah! You bet yer bippy...Grouse and Woodrowz, New York state is and can be as productive as any NE state for the elusive Mr Ruffed Grouse, not to mention a healthy population of woodcock. Having chased grouse throughout the entire NE, it always tallies up that we do just as well in our very own State, NY, as we do trekking over hill and dale hunting other states. Many, many State lands in NY are excellent for hunting grouse with populations being very steady in the last few seasons.
