  1. Has anyone tried using a sleeping to stay warm in the colder temps? The idea came across to lie prone and use a bipod. Any thoughts?
  2. Yes I kept the arrow. It was lying on the ground next to the deer. I didn't want anyone to get hurt by it.
  3. So there will be no problem if I go back post season and pick up the skull? That is if its still there.
  4. Its on Long Island so no yotes or porky pines. It is about 70 miles from home so won't be able to get back anytime soon. But is a found tag needed to cut off the rack? Wanna do everything by the books.
  5. We found dead 9 pointer this morning. A bow hunter shot it as there was an arrow next to it. Guess they couldn't find it. Its starting to decompose. Do I need to report this to the DEC? I took GPS coords just in case.
  6. I was turkey hunting at Cranberry Mountain WMA, no luck with that. But while I was walking back to my van at the end of the day I spooked a pheasant. He didn't fly away, he ran off towards the woods. My question is is it permitted or ethical to shoot him on the ground?
  7. We went to the pond the other way and then down the trail that dead ended. We wanted to do the loop that goes south and then comes out at the field but the map from the DEC site was kinda confusing and didn't really match what we were seeing.
  8. How do you pick an area to sit? We looked for nests in the trees and didn't see any. We stopped and listened for them running around but didn't hear them either.
  9. Went to 2 different WMAs today with the family to do some squirrel hunting. We started at Cranberry Mountain WMA in Putnum County. After a long time of hiking the trails looking up, down and all around we finally saw one on the trail. He disappeared under the brush not to be seen again. We continued hiking and didn't see another one. We decided to call it quits and take a drive to Gander Mountain in Middletown. After some shopping we went to Bashakill WMA in Sullivan County. Not a squirrel to be found. We did see chipmunks, salamanders and frogs. Oh did I mention as we left both areas we saw squirrels running in the street. I swear I heard them laughing at us.
  10. "Nilla Wafers and marshmallows" Smores for skunks...
  11. The Turkey & Deer do that on the roadside here on the Island. They know we can't get them there.
  12. Thanks for the replies. I'll place them out of human view. I didn't want to give the anti hunting crowd anything to use against us.
  13. Lets say I shot an animal and want to harvest just the hide or just some of the meat what do I do with the carcass? I realize non hunters use the same areas we do and I don't think leaving skinned or butchered remains all over the place would be good for the sport.
  14. Which DEC office do you call, the one you live in or the one you took the bobcat in? (guessing the one the bobcat is in) And what does it mean to have the pelt sealed?
  15. Possibly a Black Bear & the backside of a Deer and a fawn.
  16. "Time of season" meaning is there anytime on the Island WHEN a shot gun is not allowed? And yes I know we will need this years license come October. We are going to use the end of the 11/12 licenses as scouting trips.
  17. SHHHHH....I think I hear a hunter coming from thatta way!!!
  18. Thanks for the info. We have had our licenses since the spring so we are good to go on that part. As far as being permitted "anywhere" shot guns are allowed is that refering to location or time of season?
  19. I just orderd a Crosman Nitro Venom Dusk pellet gun and I would like to use it small game hunting on the Island. I'm new to this, my Daughter and got our licenses last Spring. Where are good places to hunt squirrel, rabbit and woodchuck?
  20. Just reserved a campsite a Bear Spring Mountain for 4 nights for the weekend of 5/19. Can't wait to get up there and share the great outdoors with my Daughter.
  21. I've been camping for years, rather be outdoors. Plus its $18.00 a night. The campground website states firearms are permtted during hunting season. Just no discharging them on the grounds.
  22. I had a 65 Sport Fury just after high school. I bet a big buck could fit in the truck and still be able to close it.
  23. I am definately looking for further away from the city. G-Man mentioned Bear Spring Mtn. I did some research and found a camp ground not far away. This seems like a good place to start. I also have a DeLorme GPS.
