  1. Didn’t plant a vegetable garden this year, but I’m starting to get a lot of figs and peaches. Should be getting grapes any minute.

For those of you who didn’t grow up with figs, always look for these “stretch marks” on the side of the figs. That’s how you know it was ripened in the actual tree. Figs picked too early won’t taste good at all. They won’t get anymore sugar. The marks let you know that it had the maximum amount of sugar. You can see the marks in two of the close ups pics f8eed100b05e35674993c605e2787d28.jpg

Man, I’ve been putting my little DEP permit at every DEP site I go to. I’ve gotta read the rules more carefully.
The DEP is also doing forest management? That’s great! I thought their approach was to not touch it and leave it in a forever wild state. Is this new? Do you now if the cut locations and dates are posted?

Forever wild is state parks of NY not DEP. DEP is technically private so they can do as they please. They are most definitely logging their forests, but its mostly because they see an improvement of water quality. The improved habitat is a happy byproduct for them. At least this is what was explained to me by the foresters I've spoken to

Please confirm:  my archery tag is either sex, and thus: I can take only 1 buck all season on Long Island 1C,  and then another buck with my regular season rifle tag.

So I can get 2 bucks, one with my bow, and another for rifle.

and then whatever DMP's I happen to get.

You can shoot 2 bucks on the island. The regular season and bow season buck tags can be used. In fact you can use your reg season buck tag on oct 1st and then use your bow either sex tag after if you chose to do it that way

Basically its an ID that can be used as a passport in some cases like going to Canada and some govt buildings. Its pretty stupid

Is that true?  What do they taste like?

They pretty much taste like nothing. They'll taste more of what you put on it than an actual taste. I never keep kings anymore. Only fish ill keep are steel, browns and chrome coho's

Great to hear, because that's one of the spots I was planning on hunting this year

  7. I have a few goals this year

    1. Enjoy every minute in the outdoors and have fun- There's nothing better than hunting and fishing, so enjoying every second is of the utmost important

    2. Spend as much time hunting and fishing with friends and family as I can. I may be giving up hunting some better spots in order to hunt with friends, but the experience is well worth it!

    3. Take my dog out hunting as much as I can. There's nothing she loves more than going hunting and I love hunting with her too, so its a no brainer

    4. Try to get a nice buck with my bow. Always a goal of mine every year, but the importance is slipping down the list.

    5. Get my first grouse over my dog. Never got a grouse before, but I wont hunt for them if its not over my dog

    6. Get a mallard duck. I shoot so many black ducks and wood ducks, but always whiff on mallards.

    7. Get a bear this year

Last minute excitement for me that starts with a 2:01 alarm clock and a 2:30 jog to
montauk to join my buddy, his father and son on a charter for striped bass (and hopefully fluke and sea bass).
Massive amount of deer in the drive out; one glorious 8-10 pointer
Hoping to update later with some pics!

  9. I've been fishing the salmon river for the las 13 years, so I've learned a thing or two up there. I may forget a thing or two, but you're more than welcome to pm me. End of sept is a good time to catch salmon. Some years the main run is later, but there will be fish in the river.

First you'll want a good pair of waders with either felt bottoms or some type of screw in the boot. Last thing you want is to be swept down river while fishing. I suggest getting a breathable wader since the weather will probably be warmer.

Id suggest one of you guys to buy a big net, but its not 100% necessary as you can beach or ask someone to net your fish.

Bring a good set of sunglasses. I prefer polarized in order to see the fish resting and coming up river, but its more about protecting your eyes. You will get hit with random split shot from someones line if you fish there enough. I almost knocked a guy out when my split shot recoiled back after a fish popping off.

Buy plenty of split shot and hooks. I use the tin split shot up there and prefer #2, but a lot of people hate them. You wont be able to buy lead split shot in NY. For hooks I used blackird hooks in #2, but mustad is a very popular choice to use up there too. I wouldn't go much bigger than #2 though.

You'll want a 9ft rod or longer. If you fly fish, you'll want a 9wt (8 being the absolute minimum) I fished for years using a cabelas medium action noodle rod, and caught a ton of fish. Now I use a fly rod and would never go back.

Not gear but learn how to tie a snell knot. It'll increase your hook up ratio big time. Any knot will do though. I also suggest you learn how to tie it standing with gear in your hands. Once you move, your spot is up for grabs and someone will take it. If you're respectful with a group of guys, they may allow you in the rotation of spots that guys will usually do.

Bring a vest if you can. Not critical, but it'll help big time when you're tying out on the river.

Bring a good stringer if you can in order to keep fish in the river.

Use maxima chameleon line. Pretty much a standard up there and since its the same color as the water, its pretty good. I used 12 pounds for years with great success, but I use 15 now since switching to a fly rod.

Learn how to bottom bounce. These fish wont be biting, so you're really trying to floss them. The steelhead will bite, but they will be far and few between when you'll be up there. If you're lucky, you'll hit a run of coho. I've never been able to, but all the videos tell me that I want to one day. Be careful how you lift, you don't want to be hit for snagging.

For bait I use atlas mike eggs, but since the salmon wont be biting, there's nothing wrong with a bit of sponge.

Get to the river early if you want to save a spot. Guys usually get there when its dark to capitalize on the first light run and to save a spot.

  10.   I am Thinking of giving this a go. I live in- 3M area.
Not much of a Deer Hunter here- maybe 30 times or so out in 48 years .
I see DMP + DMAP Tags. Do I need both or just ask for a 3M Doe Permit.
I have a few areas where,I can take my 30-30 with the iron sights. I know Stewart prohibits Rifles- so,I might borrow my Brother in Law's  Shotgun with the Slug Barrel.
Need to talk to Cynthia. See if She is going.

Just dmps. DMAP’s are something different. You should be able to get both 3M doe tags. May go out there myself with the muzzleloader

I took home 2 keeper fluke and chef took home 1 plus 2 schoolies blues(released a 3rd). We also caught bunches of short fluke, handful of robins, a shad and a blowfish.

How early does EHD start to rear it's ugly head?
Or, more optimistically, when can we breathe a sigh of relief that it is not showing up this season?

I got mine long enough ago that I don't need to pay the $10 Doe tag fee. I bought them for my boys right before they upped the fee and added the Doe tag $10 so they are clear too. The clerk asks for the fee every time(I like going To places to get my tags!) and I remind her I don't need to pay.

My parents did the same thing for me the day before I they changed the fee and added the 10 dollar doe tag fee

  15. My parents got me mine the first year I started hunting so the lifetime jr license was much cheaper. I think they paid 600 dollars for lifetime hunting fishing and bow. Ive more than made up that money at this point and am enjoying free licenses for the next 50-60 years. 2 Years ago I bought my lifetime muzzleloader license for 250. Going to be a long time before I pay that off, but that's alright.

Just got mine in the mail.
