    I'm no stranger to social media as some members on here know (the ones who I am friends with on Instagram) and I believe its ruining a good bit of hunting. Guys are getting lost in jealousy. I'm seeing people who are shooting great deer, but aren't that happy with it because they're seeing guys shooting bigger ones. Too many hunters my age are having that happen to them. Guys that don't want to post their deer because they're worried people will look down on them for not shooting a 140" buck off public with a bow. Its a shame when someone shoots a beautiful deer, that they have to feel anything less than happy. 

    There is a positive where its encouraging guys to push themselves and are successful when maybe they wouldn't have been with out that push from social media guys. I think people need to tune that stuff out and follow what makes them happy with hunting. In the end of the day its all about enjoying what you do. If you're not enjoying it, why do it? All in all, I think social media is hurting more than its helping at this point.

    I'm waiting to order a 2022 Tundra Limited. I've been trying to arrange a test drive and its been an absolute nightmare. No one wants to give a straight answer...I hate dealerships. I'm probably going to buy sometime in July/August. Im waiting for more details on the hybrid before I decide which powertrain I want. Not looking forward to paying 55k for a truck, but it is what it is at this point

    Get there as early as possible on Friday if you can. If not, you will find birds in the woods surrounding the fields. A lot of guy with dogs tend to just hit the fields and that's it, but the woods remain untouched. I tend to go in the woods a bit with my dog, but not as much as I probably should. Big fields are very hard to hunt with out a dog since birds will run around you instead of fly. It can be done, just harder than going into the woods. Ill be there as well tomorrow. They stock on the weekends, as well as one day during the week. They switch up the days, so it wont be easy to know which day it is. I still find birds out there when im shotgun hunting, so there will be birds there tomorrow.

    My group will do 10-12 miles when we drive the public lands on the island. A well orchestrated deer drive is a hard thing to do. Many ways they can go wrong, and it seems like more times than not, the deer do something you didn’t expect

    Started out yesterday watching 4 doe leave a bedding area, but I wasn’t able to get a shot I liked so I let them go. Then I went to Stewart and bumped a few deer that went the opposite way I thought they’d run by the way I was pushing. Met up with Cynthia and she did a couple pushes but the deer scooted out the other way on that drive too.

    On my way out I was driving and saw what I swore was a deer head in a tall grassy field. I turned around, parked at the closest spot and walked in to where I thought they may be. Sure enough there were two doe just standing there with out a care unit the world on 40 yards from me. I picked up the muzzleloader and it took every bit of me not to pull the trigger. Perfect broadside shots on both of them. All I was thinking was that I had to be at work at 6:30 and I didn’t want to be too tired driving home. I do regret not shooting, especially when I woke up to 25 degree weather and I could have let it hang with out a problem. I’ll be back there Sunday probably. Hopefully they’re still there

    I think NY is getting better and better every year. Its true there is a lot of pressure, but good hunters adapt to it. Most of our hunters only hunt a few weekends a year so for 2-3 days, we have high hunter numbers. Outside of that its not so bad. Id rather most places think NY is horrible for deer hunting if you ask me. We'll get less pressure that way

    I admit Im not the best guy to be explaining it, and I know there are a few guys on this forum that can explain it much better than I can. There's also a ton of online articles that probably explain it better than me. Its been a while since I've been in a physics course so im plenty rusty on it and how to explain it. I thought I did an ok job at explaining it, but maybe I didn't (no problem accepting that I may not have). I was just saying that the additional cost of a 50mm scope compared to a 40mm scope may not pay the dividends the OP is looking for, especially since he already doesn't sound like he's in love with the idea of a 50mm scope. Maybe he would be better off putting the difference in getting a higher quality glass instead of a bigger objective. I think higher quality glass will make a bigger difference than a bigger objective.

    Not anti 50mm, just showing its not a necessity and trying to put some facts behind my claim. Will a 50mm take in more light than a 40mm...100 percent it will. Is it worth buying a new scope when you can turn the power down a little...not in my opinion. The main place the 50 excels is being able to keep it on a higher power during low light conditions. Only the OP can really decide if that benefit is worth the added cost of a brand new scope and rings.

    LOL dude I couldn't care less about how they look, that makes literally no difference to me (but it did to the OP if you look back). Idk why you put science in quotation marks, go look it up. Its not a myth, these are facts. Nothing I said is factually incorrect. If you don't want to believe it, that's a different story. I'm just trying to show the OP that spending all that money on a big 50mm scope and new rings, may not deliver on expectations. No where did I say I was anti 50mm either

    Now its been a good while since I've done these calculations in my physics courses so forgive me if I'm a little off on things. I believe it has to do with exit pupil calculations. Ill have to do some reading when I have time to better explain it, but ill say what I can remember off the top of my head.

    Your pupil is what control how much light your eye can take in and during the day its somewhere around 2 to 4mm. A 5mm objective on 7x will give you around 7mm of EP (exit pupil) and on 10x it will be 5mm. Basically you're only registering 4mm of EP and the rest is basically not helping. It can make a difference when it gets to those last few minutes of legal light when your pupils can dilatate up to 7mm. You can achieve the same level of light in a 40mm by reducing the magnification of the scope. Basically it only helps at very low light situations when you want it on a higher power setting. If you're ok with reducing the magnification a bit, you can achieve the same results in a 40mm lens. So it looks like my original comment was slightly incorrect, but I still hold firm that its a bit of a waste unless you're consistently shooting very far distances in low light situations.

    While technically a 50mm will take in more light than a 40, It actually wont make a difference when it comes to what you can actually see. Your eye can only take up so much light, so a 3-9x40 will take in as much light as your eye can handle. Better off spending extra for higher quality glass than getting a bigger objective. I've always been able to see better through my 40 than my own eyes after a certain point.

    Okay guys don't kill me for this, but ive been really bad about posting to the forum this season. I shot this buck on November 14th on public land out on Long Island. Got to the spot with my friend and found some nice sign, and got set up over it. As I finished pulling my bow rope up, I look over and see this buck 30 yards. It came right to 20 yards, but when my friend got up to shoot, his jacket fell to the floor and the deer ran off. It wasn't too spooked, and i had a feeling it would be back. About an hour later as my friend is turning to talk to me, he sees the buck coming back. He gets ready to shoot it as its coming in. Before it got to his lane, it turned behind us and gave me a 15 yard shot. I shot the buck, it ran about 100 yards and dropped. Not going to lie, I thought it was quite a bit bigger, but I'm still pleased with the buck. Hair has been cut since then thankfully, so I no longer look like a cave man
