  1. I appreciate the help. Which would you recommend? I don't have access to a roller Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  2. And if not rototiller then just scrape up the top soil real good with a garden rake. Correct? So looks like I have 2 options. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  3. Stumps are maple so I will leave them then. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  4. Alright so sounds like I should just till in the litter. Then wait for a few rains before planting to let the soil settle? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  5. I have about a 40x50 space cleared in the hardwoods for my plot. Weedeated it and took out majority of small saplings. Luckily the area doesn't have a heavy leaf base. Surprisingly very little to be honest.. Only about a couple leaves thick. Also seemed to pick a good spot as the soil is dark and moist.. I haven't done a soil test yet as I got in and sprayed glyphosate today. Questions..... Once the herbicide has sat for a week or so, I'll have to start stick and debris removal. 1) should I just use the rototiller and mix in the dead weeds/ferns/leaves? Or should I rake them off? 2) should I pull out the small stumps? 1-4inches in diameter. I left them about 18inches tall. There's about 15 of them spaced all over. 3) instead.of rototiller tilling should I just rake off the leaves and dead stuff and use a garden rake to rough up the topsoil? 4) or should remove the dead litter and then rototiller till? 5) once I'm ready to broadcast the seed should I then work the soil to cover some up or just leave it as is? I'm going to wait for a good rain and seed before it. Thank you for any help you can provide. This is our first attempt at a plot. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  6. Thanks for the trail cam votes of confidence and tips guys. I appreciate it. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  7. It's not a full time thing either. Just a quick experiment. It will come down in a few days, if there is no sign in the area then it won't go back up. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  8. It's just a block of untreated 2x2 about 4 inches long, soaked in Apple scent, hanging about 12 feet off the ground near the edge of the property. By pruning back the Appletrees and underbrush around them we hope they will produce more heavily this year. We hope that with a patch of clover/kalewith draw deer in. The block is just a test hypothesis. Since mineral/food licks are illegal but attractant are not. I figure it was worth a shot to see if the Apple attractants my buddy uses actually work. The block is unreachable by deer so as to prevent them being able to lick it. And I expect the scent will be gone within 48 hrs. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  9. Yeah I'm looking at a base Moultrie. I figure a little extra rain protection won't hurt Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  10. So my buddy and I are doing a small plot in an attempt to pull the deer from the outskirts of his property to the interior. Th is is the initial clear. I went in the rain today and cleaned it up further as well as cleared a shooting lane into the plot. I have a block I put in today to start drawing them. And I am going to put in 2 cams to see what can be seen. I am looking for tips as to weatherproofing and or protecting them. I am only getting 50$ cams and the pictures they take will suit my purpose. But I do have weatherproofing concerns. My thought is to take a sheet of metal. Bend a peak into it then cut out a half circle to serve as a roof of sorts over the cam. Secure it with a screw on either side or a small bungee... This obviously won't completely weatherproof cam but it should divert a good portion of the rain. Thoughts? Tips? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  11. Thanks all. It was a valuable learning experience. And it's nice to get a bird under my belt after a goose egg last year Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  12. Took the legs/thighs and breasts. Made a slit. Pulled back the skin. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  13. Beard was almost 4.5 inches long. Didn't stick straight out. It hung down. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  14. Thanks for all the congrats guys! Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  15. Thank to those not ripping me apart. I expected to get it from all sides posting here. As for a safe shot. I identified the bird as being a turkey. Having a beard and being small... I took it for a Jake. Having never seen live turkey this close before. I was shooting down a slight Hill and behind the bird was a hummock of earth left from some old project which was over 5 feet high. 20 yards isn't far. I wasn't shooting at a blue head. I was shooting a clearly defined Jake ( to me). Having seen it half strut. It's not like this was a 60 yard shot 20 minutes before legal light at what could have been someone's dog. Turns out hens do half/full strut. Lots of videos out there. Take into account that I am learning all of this on my own and doing it on my own. Real beneficial for future hunters out there when the old dogs rip em down at the tiniest perceived infraction. Gives all hunters a bad rap. Again thanks all for the insight. I assure you now that I have had this experience I will be waiting for a full Tom. And all the precious Bearded hens are safe from me. Either way it was legal. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  16. 2nd season. First time ever i got a bird in range.. Bird hung up up about 50 yards away and was all puffed and strutting. It then relaxed and came in to my decoy.. I continued calling it in and used the binos to confirm the red and white head and the beard... Confirmed them both. And took the shot at 20 yards. So excited to get what I had identified as a young Jake. I was fine with taking a Jake because of getting skunked last season. I only saw birds once last year. You can imagine my disappointment when I turned the bird over looking for spurs and found none Oh well learned a valuable lesson. Hopefully I can get a hen and Tom into range this season so I can see the differences in real-life... Only so much can be gleaned from hunting TV. Note: to be clear had I recognized the bird as a hen I would not have taken it. Crappy photo below. On the plus side I learned alot. Actually called a bird in to me. Took it with a clean shot. Processed my first bird with only a crappy YouTube video for guidance. And now have the fan, a wing and beard curing so I can do a cheesy mount.. I do have one item that concerns me. The bird was missing the majority of its chest feathers. And the. Belly feathers that were there appeared to be molted/juvenile feathers. I'm guessing it's just a case of a young bird that was still in process of getting it's new set. Thoughts? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  17. Well I ended up going to bp's and getting their cheap boots that were on sale and their white river breathable stockingfoot waders.... I was dead set on getting neoprene boot foots for hunting purposes... But I didn't like the way they all fit.. The reviews online aren't the greatest for the pants. Hut with a full 1 year no questions asked warranty I figure if I get 10 uses I'll have my money's worth and will be able to decide if I should spend more for higher quality waders to use more often... I took them to my local Creek to try them out and make sure they didn't leak.... Happily they didn't but hold crap was I cold with only midweight merino wool long Johns on. For the salmon river trip in a few days I plan on wearing my fishing pants merino longjohns and polyester long Johns underneath. I was unable to get the waders over my rain jacket.. Is it common for this to be the case? Thanks for all the input. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  18. Hey all! I have my first salmon rum guided trip next week and I still need waders... For me they need to support fly fishing in the West Canada. Possible duck hunting and salmon river fishing. I don't know if I should go with boot foot or stocking. Or breathable vs neoprene... Hard-core fly fisherman said breathable stocking... But I've tried on several pairs and not only do they not fit good. But to account for winter warmth there isn't enough room to layer..... Is 3.5 neoprene too hot for spring and fall fly fishing? I need a one set do it all solution which will mean compromise in some areas. I'm currently leaning towards a set of Itasca marsh king 1000g camo boot foot..... Thoughts? 19. More so getting on paper. I was able to get the same rounds I had last year so I'm going out again on Tuesday to work my way back. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  20. So if I am dead.on at 25 I should be fine out to 75ish then I take it.... I can turn her back up 2 inches the scope is adjusting perfectly. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  21. Max shot is about 50-70 yards. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  22. Alright so I'm shooting 250grain spire points with with 2 50grain pellets of triple seven and a standard 209. I got my 4x scope mounted so the bottom of front bell is 1inch above the bore.. I'm hitting 2.5 inches low at 25 yards. (ran out of bullets) 2.5 low will put me about 1 inch high at 100 correct? Or a little less? Based on what I was able to gather off the webs. 23. Beautiful so a week is even better Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  24. So how soon can I go back to my stand after harvesting a deer from it? Quite a bit of blood was thrown around. And we dragged a ways before we gutted. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  25. and so it begins. Told the wife I need a good dehydrator for Xmas. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
