  1. I'm glad others feel the color is from air. Where the meat was touching itself within the packs it was the standard nice red color..... My time as a meat cutter in grocery stores leads me to think that air is the culprit due to the packaging and sit time in their cooler. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  2. Feeling fine today. I'm going to eat a larger meal of it today. Just had 2 pieces. So I'll do a large meal and see what happens. I think I'm going to turn the majority of this into jerky. Anyone recommend a processor in the utica Rome Holland patent area? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  3. Thanks. I feel alot better about it after the wife's approval and then eating it. Just ordered a foodsaver gamesaver. Going to repack all the meat. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  4. Tastes good. And not too gamey Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  5. So I opened up 2 packs.. Isn't slimy. And where the meat is touching it's bright red. On the inside..... Wife smelled it as she has the nose... She says it's smells and looks fine... Like its sat in blood for 2 days. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  6. The cutter called sat around to tell me it was ready. Couldn't pick it up until today so it sat in their cooler till today. So shot Thursday morning. Gutted within and hour or so. Hun g from about noon Thursday till 4 Friday. Went direct to cutter... Called to say it was ready about noon Saturday. Picked it up today. The stomach was hit a little so I flushed the crap out of the cavity with ice water. ( not from a stream) While it was hanging it touched up around 55* caught a little bit of sun. 7. Thanks all... I appreciate it.... So for 85$ it should have been labeled I take it? I got the doe thanksgiving morning and the shop was closed. It hung through till 4 the next day. And it was in the 50s. Some of the meat had darkened as it was exposed to the air. Specifically the inner thighs of the rear legs. Based on my experience in meat departments in college the beef will darken if it isn't papered over night. Due to air exposure. This is my first deer and with Noone to lead me I'm winging it. I can't imagine they would knowingly let me take home bad meat in this world of the Internet and rapid word of mouth. Looking into vac packs now Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  8. Alright. 80 odd dollars later and less than 24 hr turnaround and I have 38lbs of venison on my table. Now obviously I see the tenderloins. Burger, thicker larger "steaks" and stew meat pack.... Can you help me identify some of the other packs or toss some ideas my way. The rest of the packs are small pieces considering..... Next time I'll specifically ask for larger "roasts" if possible and slice my own up. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  9. Thanks all. It feels great to finally close the deal. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  10. Thanks. Based.on the froth and exit wound I hit a lung and clipped the stomach. Took alot of rinsing. Based on how quick she piled up and the giant froth pile she left. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  11. Yeah we see them coming in in the am. I've tried flagging them down but to no avail. There's was bad blood or something a decade ago. My partner and I are looking to repair it. I was going to call deer search but it's turkey day and I don't think there is anyone in the utica Rome area. Going in at 4am for work tomorrow and out at 3 so not alot of time there for tracking. 13. Yes recovered the first and lost the 2nd. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  14. And I wanted to thank the group for the input and advice given to me here. It is much appreciated. Again I feel terrible about the 2nd doe. It pains me to think that I put that extended suffering on an animal. Lesson learned. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  15. Well after putting in over 150 hrs last year, my first season. I hit dirt today. My friend and I built some stands in an old logged area we didn't hunt last year. We have sat them on opened weekend 8 hours both days. Sunrise and sunset. We saw deer the first morning but moving too fast in the thick. And saw about 6 in a neighbors field.. This am he went to his old stand and I sat the new one. About 830 I looked up from my book at a sound and had a doe coming through in range broadside. I got the rifle up and picked a slot farther ahead of her that a clear shot.. I had about 3 foot gap. Waited and took the shot... She took off into the woods. I thought I had missed her. As I sat stunned from my first shot ever I saw 2 more does coming down the same line. They had stopped and duckedinto a trail behind some SCrubb. We had agreed to fill each others doe tags if the opportunity arose. So I lined up for a shot in a clearing ahead of them. And took the shot., she jumped and then ran 10 yards and they hung up in the scrub. I sat there after radioing the situation to my partner. I watched them for 5 minutes in the thicket. The smaller doe walked towards me and stared me down. I could see the one I shot in the scrub and that she was limping.but mostly just standing. I waited. Suddenly they take off. I lose visual. A few minutes later deer come crashing from thickets between my partner and I. He comes out shortly after. He had come.straight to me instead.of taking our trail on the outskirts. He had kicked the wounded doe out of her bed. I was pretty steamed as we had alot of time to sit still. And he should have gone the long way. Long story short.... I had hit the first deer. Hair and bright thick blood at impact. The piled up and thrashed 20 yards from the hit. Just down a small trench out of my view. We tracked the blood on the other deer for a couple hours. It went all over in the small thicket/old orchard I hit her. .. no blood at impact or hair. Found some drops about 10 yards from poi. Small drops every 15-20 feet. Large blood where she was standing when I was watching her. We went back and forth and then circle and grid searched the whole side of his property. We determined she Mustad have entered the neighboring property we don't have tracking permission for.... And it had been a shooting gallery there all day. My partner was much better then me at the tracking and spotting and definitely showed me some things. He determine did must have hit the shoulder based on blood color and scarcity. I am truly tormented about this. And it has put a huge pall over my first successful harvest.... Hindsight being 20/20 once I had seen the limp I should have shot her again (I could have) to make sure she was down as she stood still for quite a few minutes in the thicket.. Lessons were learned. Please don't rip me up too bad for the 2nd doe. I already know... Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  16. .308... I'm not sure what the grain was on the round nose... The spires are 180. Good point on the grain. I have one round nose left that going to be loaded for the season. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  17. My last few round nose still drilled at 1moa. Last week. I checked mounting everything is tight. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  18. I should add it is strictly for deer season... And sub moa is not necessary. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  19. So I shot express corelokts last year.blunt /round tip with the lead. I got them sighted into 1moa. They shot amazing when I did my part. Long story short. I couldn't seem to find them this year. So I got the spire points figuring they would be close and maybe I'd need to adjust my scope a little. Boy was I wrong... They are shooting all over from a rested position...... I was able to get them into a 5inch group. But no where close to those roundnose I had last year.... I either got a good batch of the round nose or a bad batch of these spire points.... Either way I'm looking for a recommendation of a new higher quality round that comes in a rounded nose. I'd like to step up in price a bit but I don't need match or high end. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  20. The biner would at least allow quick detach... With the webbing I have to fully untie from the tree. Dethread the harness strap. Untwist and reassemble. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  21. As a new hunter and a first season bow hunter.... The guidance of a seasoned hunter would be amazing... However I have Noone to provide it.. So as mentioned I have spent many hours reading. Watching videos. And alot of time reading hunt reports and discussions here. I have put alot of time into practicing with my compound. And though I am comfortable in the backyard to 30 yards. Even after having my rig professional tuned and papered I would only dare to reach out to 20 in a prime shot. Certainly not over 20. I am sure over time my confidence, experience and accuracy will grow.. But for this season it better be close for me to take a shot. It is the same with my Rifle. I can consistently reach 2-3inches groups or better at 100yards. But I doubt I would dare shoot past 50 in the field. Muzzle loader max is about 30-40. With regards to cross bows and the debate in hand..... I feel that they should be covered in the bow class.. And the class be required for the privilege. Simply because the wounding method is in the same vein. And its functions more closely correlates with bow. However I don't think the season should be expanded further than it currently sits. With the exception of disability permissions. I enjoy this bow season simply because it's quiet. I haven't seen a single animal other than birds. Probably due to my poor site selection. But knowing there is less people in the woods. And not hearing the regular Crack of rifles gives a certain serenity that I don't feel during Rifle season. In its current state of legality. No required course and ease of use makes it easier for yahoo's to get in early and ruin what is the best part of hunting.. And then on top of that no prior education requirements will promote more ignorance on the use and practice of the Xbow and bow hunting itself. That said I will eventually get a Xbow and use it as another tool in my arsenal during the appropriate times. Choosing it purely according to location and desired hunt experience. I do not think it should be folded fully into bow season... I enjoy the separate seasons for the variety. And they have their own unique aspects and challenges. ***edit****to clarify... I Dont mean to imply that anyone who picks up a cross bow is negligent or a yahoo.... But I personally know 2 yahoo's. I won't hunt with for safety sake. Who are talking about getting Xbow.s Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  22. This is what I'm looking at to go with my HSS bowhunter harness. http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/rope-style-treestrap-1/ Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  23. Alright so it looks like the Prussic knot rope system for the tree should alleviate my issues....? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  24. Had a good sit the other night.. Sought some sleep. Slept about 20 minutes out of a 4.5 hour sit... However in standing and adjusting the stand.. Putting on layers etc... My strap from harness to the tree belt became very twisted... Also the belt system is a pita... Is there a better system that possibly swivels? Instead.of the Seattle tree belt? Where the built in strap of my harness won't get twisted- Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
  25. Didn't realize it was your gig nyantler... Happy to do a free plug Is it really so hard to Google how to measure and then apply it conservatively? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk
