  1. I Guess I am still "old" school, I was taught that Hunting was all about putting food on the table. I don't spent $60 on a Lic. $30 on shells and spent countless hours in the woods letting deer walk buy because something "bigger" might come by. If the deer presents a safe/Killing shot and meets MY standards then I will take it. I don't care if its a doe, a spike, or a monster. I have taken many spikes and crotch-horns that outweighed many of my buddies 6 and 8 points. I am blessed to live in an area that has plenty of deer, however you would not know that after opening weekend. I also take my son with me and the Memories we have shared in the stand are priceless!
  2. I have been out scouting hard the past 2 weekends, I have seen many old rubs from last yr, but not too many from this year. I was getting worried with only 22 days left till Shotgun season and no sign anywhere around my treestand.
  3. I am so ready for Nov 15th, I am wearing Orange to bed!
  4. Belo, I guess there are some limitations, If the deer is no bigger than my Lab, I will let it walk.
  5. You guys are going to hate me, I say that term all the time, I am a DEER Hunter, I don't shoot this years deer, however I will shoot a spike or a doe opening morning. I have never eaten Horn soup or Tag soup, but I heard its not that great. I have sat in the stand for days and not seen a deer, so when the opertunity presents itself I put food on the table first. I also hunt with my son so just being with him and the numerous memories in the stand make it all worth while.
  6. Flech and Jesse, I am not going to say I am old, however I and my old man were hunting over there long before Radison was even thought of,,,,,took many deer over in your neck of the woods, also miss the Pheasent hunting. I used to live on County Line rd between Pendergast and 48.
  7. I saw twice as many cars on the side of the road Saturday then I did on the first day of Regular Deer Season, Sat in the Stand all day, Saw 2 doe about 100 yds out, no shot. Only heard about 6 shots all day. Even though there was still some snow on the ground in the woods I think the 50 degree temps affected the deer movement. Hopefully all the people who drove hours to see our "herds" of deer now realize that the only deer are in the city limits and un-huntable!
  8. True, there is no Public land, There is the Cornell land, however what I see of that its mostly swamp or open fields and if you didn't apply by Oct 15th your SOL there too.
  9. Its starts this Saturday, First time they have offered a Jan. Hunt in Tompkins County. I've been hunting around Ithaca for Years and I don't see where the DEC is seeing all these deer unless your in the city limits and then you see deer in peoples yards 24/7. I hunted almost every day during regular gun season and I haven't fired the gun yet.
  10. You have to apply before Oct. 15th to hunt on Cornell Land, there are many acres of prime hunting land at Connecticut Hill.
  11. Nov. 27th in Ithaca and No snow yet, cold and good for hanging deer. It doesn't look like any measurable snow in the short term forcast either.
  12. My Dad who in my eyes was the best Deer Hunter in the world, he took me with him when i was old enough to walk and we use sit by a tree in the hardwoods and he would tell me to be the tree and only talk when the tree talked and only move when the tree moved. Back then you could only shoot bucks and it was shotgun only and there was no "slug" guns, you used the shotgun that you knew where it hit at 50 yards. Back then and today I get a feeling of unconditional excitement in November and everyday closer to the first day of Deer season. I don't know about the Deer Population where the rest of you hunt/live however where I live I count about 25-50 deer everyday in the fields and peoples front yards. I tell my kids that when i was there age we only saw deer in the morning and at night and you never saw herds of 25 like we see now.
  13. That Buck is what Hunters Dreams are made of!
  14. Hello Fellow NY Hunters, My name is Mark and I was Born and Raised in a small town north of Syracuse called Phoenix, My Dad taught me to Hunt and Fish at a very young age and I have been doing it ever since. I went in the military at 18 and spent 21 years traveling the country and Hunting all over from Texas, California, South Carolina, Indiana, Missouri, and Maine. Upon retiring from the Military I moved back to NY and settled in the Fingerlakes region near Lansing NY. I have been blessed to have 2 beautiful kids and my Son Garth is following in my footsteps and loves Hunting just as much as me. Over the years with my Dad and my Brothers I have taken over 100 deer but none mean as much to me as the ones I have taken with my son. I have been reading this site for about a yr now and when I saw a pic from a fellow hunter from my home town I decided to join and maybe put my 2 cents in when needed. haha I mostly Hunt Deer however I love to hunt Pheseant also. I hunt with Gun and someday would love to get into bow hunting.
  15. Gret Job Fletch, I was born and raised in the Phoenix, have spent most of my childhood Deer and Pheseant Hunting 3 rivers and private land out in the country around there.
