  1. Decided to get prepared for muzzleloader for the afternoon instead of heading out with the bow this morning. From the looks of it I made the wrong choice. The dog was right. There were deer in the woods behind the house while I was reading cleaning instructions in the living room. Hoping they come back through. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  2. And they all lived happily ever after...except the ones who didn't. (Which in my case was was only one during gun.)
  3. As the world thaws. Might have well been blowing a boat horn trying to get into the woods today. Now I'm being subjected to a form of water torture as the ice melts off the trees and drums against the top of the blind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  4. Got so foggy at times my eyes were playing tricks on me. No deer though. Sat until I got so bored I thought I'd lose my mind and decided to still hunt. No sooner get five feet into the wind from the blind and I hear something behind me go crashing off into the dense scrub. Can't help but wonder if I'd stayed in the blind...would they have come by? I had a very humorous tangle with a berry bush and spent time overthinking where I might sit next weekend for late bow season. Seriously considering beginning to tackle the pile of hides given to me tomorrow instead of going out. Burnt out with one day left.
  5. Sitting in the pop up blind that I had crammed into a blowdown. Isn't even popped out on all sides. But the roof is working. Which is good. It looks like all day rain. Nice coating of ice on everything here on the hilltop. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  6. This morning was so quiet you could hear a woodpecker fart at 200 yards. Instead, I heard one neighbor come in and climb into another neighbor's ladder stand. That got sorted out. I started thinking that the tracks I saw on the buck trail were only moments old when I walked in. I figured he would be coming back out at about 11:00. (Based on pervious trail cam evidence) so I decided to go in, get the pies in the oven, and get back out by 10:15) I was late. When I walked back in at 11:15 there were tracks headed back along the same route, other direction. I'm glad I didn't give up. I've been busting my butt to get something for the freezer. So when that four point appeared on the trail headed for a tiny window of opportunity I was thrilled and determined. Dropped in his tracks at 60 yards with the 12 gauge my mother gave me just before she passed away last spring. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
  7. Greensider (appropriate name for this discussion), that's what I was thinking. It is a place where deer are often hit.
  8. So I got a call from a friend who said they found a doe dead in their back yard last night. They needed it to go away. So I stopped by to check it out. It appeared to have been shot just behind the jaw with a shotgun slug. The deer was partially frozen, which I believe is not surprising given the temps we've had. We determined that it may be completely safe to process for the freezer, assuming it was hit the day before. BTW they are in town, this deer traveled quite a distance from hunting areas to get here. When I went to field dress it I found that the skin on the belly on the side that was against the ground was green. I can find no sign of a shot to the gut. I just stopped right there. There is no good place to spill the guts of a gut shot deer in this tightly populated area with kids and dogs running around. The hair pulled out from the area and it smells like sauerkraut. What do you think? Was this deer gut shot too and I just can't find the hole? Or was it laying there longer than 24 hours and started to rot? Either way, this is not a freezer score for anyone. Which is sad, because the deer will go to waste. But I'm curious about the details of its death that can be discerned from the information we have. I assume the shot was aimed at the head, or that the deer was running and they failed in their attempt to lead it. Interested in opinions on this. The sad part is that I was headed to the hunting cabin this evening and cancelled plans because I thought I would be processing this deer.
  9. Went back out for the last 2 hours. Managed to stay nice and warm. There was a nice light snow. But again...no deer. Frustrating! I hope the weekend brings me some better luck.
  10. Went out before work today to freeze a bit and see nothing. But I do believe I may have identified the new high traffic route. It seems to change every year just before the gun opener. I picked out a couple places where I could sit on the ground and wait. Might need to be an evening sit, which is more of an afternoon sit this time of year.
  11. Had 2 hours, 11:00 - 1:00 to sit in the back woods at home today. No blind or stand at home so I sat in a blow down. Saw deer leaving bedding area from wrong side and that was it. Then, when I walked out I stopped to check the trail camera. Opened it up turned it off looked up and saw antlers coming straight at me. Dropped my pack, with quiver attached, dropped myself down next to it, nocked an arrow and immediately drew. Stayed at full draw for some time as he did a semi circle around me at 15 yards. Scooted around on my butt following him waiting for a clear shot. Just before he stepped into an opening he changed his mind and stayed in the thick stuff. Really exciting! I'm going to have to find a way to sit closer to that spot and still see them coming. Pretty proud of myself for being able to get so close to getting a shot on such short notice! I wish the camera was on. I would have documented the whole thing.
  12. In 8R I saw bucks cruising two and three weeks ago. This past weekend, NOTHING. In 9P the trail cam tells me they are chasing. It looks like I've failed in my goal to get one during early bow season. But I succeeded in seeing many more deer than last bow season! So that's progress. Off to a conference for the week. Perhaps I will find time for one more sit next Friday. Till then I live vicariously through the updates here!
  13. I'm looking for hides. I've landed an artist residency in April to do some printing on deer hides and start my next body of work. If anyone is interested in donating hides toward this cause, please message me. I'm in the Alfred, NY area. Thanks!
  14. Good news. No unwanted messages. Here is the link to today's follow-up article by Dave Figura. http://www.syracuse.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2014/10/animal_rights_blogger_slaughtered_deer_on_display_in_syracuse_u_art_exhibit.html
  15. He posted a link to my office phone number. Want to bet on how many messages will I have when I get into the office in the morning?
  16. Hey! My show was reviewed by an anti that never saw it. Check it out. "It’s common for art galleries to receive a fresh coat of paint between one exhibit coming down and another being installed. Come October 20, the Syracuse University Art Galleries are going to need a hazmat-suit-requiring floor-to-ceiling deep cleaning to remove any and all traces of the Neanderthals who might have visited the place to see a repulsive and inanely titled show called Deer Dear. Drool will need to be removed from gallery walls and traces of human flesh will need to be peeled off floors on which visitors’ knuckles dragged." Read more of his idiocy here: http://thedailymaul.com/slaughtered-deer-on-display-in-syracuse-art-exhibit/ Thanks for the added attention to the show. ...and you're welcome for the additional hits on your blog.
  17. http://www.syracuse.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2014/09/controversial_deer_dear_art_exhibit_open_for_public_viewing_at_su_art_galleries.html#incart_river Well the word "controversial" in the headline should have been expected, right? Any press is good press for an artist. ...so they say.
  18. Lawdwaz, yes, I am the artist. Sure, add me to the list! Now I will have to go find the list. Didn't know there was one. The opening reception is this Thursday from 5-7pm. I have high hopes of seeing a bit of camo in the crowd.

  20. Followed some tracks from early this morning to where they crossed the road. I thought I was going to be lucky enough to follow them into the thick area where they bedded. But it seems that every deer on the hill crossed the road this morning and headed into the valley. Only other tracks I saw were from a lone coyote. I had a great walk though. That snow can really wear you out!
  21. I think I'll take the bow for a walk in the snowy woods. I don't expect anything other than a lonely snowy walk. Which is fine with me.
  22. Is it possible that he is not aware of the late season and/or that someone is hunting there? If he just showed up, right after gun season closed, it may be that he thinks he's not disturbing anyone. ...or that he's safer out in the woods. Either way. I'd try to bump into him and have a polite conversation. And how is it that deer know where property lines are and always seem to choose the safe side of the line?!?
  23. Soooo cold this morning! I took a sleeping bag to the ground blind with me, which probably smelled like the closet of the spare bedroom. But at least I had a few hours in the woods to close out the season. Unless I'm crazy enough to attempt to bow hunt in the cold that is forcasted, I'm done. The freezer is not empty. But it's not as full as I'd like. Amazed by the lack of deer this year.
  24. Once I got cold I decided to try an experiment and push to myself. Did a walk by of the thick stuff thinking they would exit into the wind and into the woods. Then circled to the back and still hunted through the woods a 1/4 mile from where I pushed. The good news is, it seemed to work. The bad news is I was spotted and couldn't get a shot off in time. And I saw a snowy owl! Very cool to see.
  25. A wind chill of 15 and my stash of hand and toe warmers ran out yesterday. Something tells me this will be a short morning. In other news...Appearently, nobody knows how to forcast the weather. Where is the snow?
