  1. The bad news is the deer attacked my poor apple tree last night. I vow to eat the deer that ate my tree.
  2. Crappyice, that is my new plan for St. Pat's dinner. Thanks.
  3. I learned that there's a big difference between one cup of coffee and two cups of coffee. I like to stay out as long as I can. So I stick to one cup of coffee and take only granola bars or protein bars with me.
  4. I've also come across and old school bus in the woods, resting on its side and looking all spooky. Much earlier in this thread someone asked who could forget thier gun in the woods? That would be me. I set it in my ground blind after getting my second deer in as many hours. Field dressed him, dragged him back to the barn, got them both cut up and in the freezer and was just starting to doze off...remembering the excitement of the day...playing it all back in my mind...and suddenly, "shit! I left the gun in the woods!"
  5. We made scotch broth with venison instead of lamb. It was fantastic! The trick is to avoid boiling, which will toughen the meat. Made a huge pot and froze a bunch for lunch. I love to create awesome food smells at work. Reheating without overheating in the work microwave is a challenge but worth it. Not sure if this link will work, but here's the inspiration... http://honest-food.net/2011/03/10/scottish-venison-soup/
  6. Oh that seems so far away! 90 days and...? I'll continue to think in terms of months. 3 months seems closer than 90 days.
  7. I'm a fan of short names that are easy for the dog to hear quickly in case you need to call them out of a dangerous situation. I have border collies. They traditionally have short names that can be yelled from a distance. Pete, for instance, is pretty popular for working border collies. Then we ended up with this husky, which we named Mishka, but call Mo..as in The Mighty Mo. Mo rhymes with no, obviously. It's short but can confuse her if someone tells her "no," which rarely happens. She's not spoiled . We simply don't use "no" very often. We ususally give a comand for the dog to do something other than what it's doing, rather than try to get them to stop doing something that seems perfectly reasonable to them. But that's another story. So..all that being said, I like Mocha as a name for a chocolate lab. And I'd probably call her Mo.
  8. I agree. You don't need fancy equipment. I started turkey hunting (before hunting anything else) because my FIL gave us an old 16 gauge single shot shotgun. I figured I'd find a use for it. Got my first spring turkey last year, which I called in myself using a diaphragm call. I could get a gobbler's attention with a slate, but couldn't get him to commit to coming in. I learned by sitting with a friend as he called. It takes a bit of practice, (drives my dogs crazy!) but I imitated what I remembered him doing. It's a two way conversation. I learned how to get a bird increasingly riled up to keep him coming in, by listening to my friend do it. There's no substitute for that. If you can find someone to hunt with who can teach you, that's the best way imo. I knew I would do well with the diaphragm call when I inadvertently called a bird to the back of my house while practicing with the windows open. It's hilarious to me that it got me running to get the shotgun and opening windows. Regarding decoys...I kept calling this same gobbler in and he'd get hung up in the same spot 3 days in a row. So I went to Wal-mart and grabbed two cheap inflatable hens and stuck them in front of my blind. Shot my first gobbler the first day I used them. Again, nothing fancy. I'm glad turkeys don't have expensive taste.
