  1. Hello Canmandan here. I live in Canandaigua and hunt in Hopewell and out in Livingston and Alleghany Counties with my brother who lives in Mt. Morris. I also partner with another member (Bubba) on a facebook group called NY Area 6A Hunters. I have property up in 6A (St. Lawrence County, Town of Depeyster) and hunt there and state land along Fish Creek. I am 60 years old and enjoy bow hunting, shot gun hunting down here, and Rifle hunting up north.
  2. There are lots of things you can do and I am not sure anyone has the total answer. As I land owner I am kind of leery of people who show up a week before and ask permission. I figure if they are serious hunters they would want to scout the land early, know where the property lines are, etc. When I am looking for a piece to hunt I make up an index card with contact information including vehicles and license plate numbers. I dress decently and act respectful. If it is an active farm I don’t show up at meal time or milking time and never show up Sunday morning (people go to church). I tell the owner that I grew up on a farm and will respect his property. I ensure him that we will abide by his rules and won’t break his fences down, leave gates open, shoot towards buildings, leave trash in the woods, etc. If possible I bring my two boys with me, introduce them and tell the farmer we are hunting family and were brought up to be good hunters who abide by the game laws and respect other people’s property, including his neighbors. Typically after getting permission I find out who the neighbors are and give them a call just to let them know I will be hunting the property and will respect their borders. BTW- I have three adjacent pieces I hunt now because the neighbors of the original piece I hunt were impressed that someone would be courteous enough to do that so they allowed me to hunt their too. I have hunted a few pieces of property for a number of years and have always kept myself in the good graces of the owners, enough so that a couple of them are now willing to give me a good reference if an another owner wants to call about my getting permission – that is invaluable if you can manage to get someone to do it for you. If you want to find and keep a good hunting spot there is more to it that just getting permission though. Once I find a spot I go the extra mile. I do things like offer to keep an eye on the property, replace posted signs or post the property for them if they want. If I find a broken down fence, I prop it up temporarily and then tell the farmer about it, even offering to go back in and fix it (since I know exactly where it is). My buddy in the Syracuse area has life time permission to hunt this really nice farm because he offered to give the farmer 2-weekends a year in the spring to help fix fences before the cows are let out.
  3. I know where you are coming from. I just turned 60 this past year and we hunt some pretty good forsaken pieces of property up north. It is doable; you legs just get shorter quicker. I got back into bow hunting a few years ago with my younger brother (57) and have hunted mainly in the town of Hopewell. I have never hunted anywhere in Wayne County but my brother used to live in Palmyra and hunted there. He recently bought a house in Mt. Morris. If you hunt by yourself and are looking for some company, we could consider ganging up on them.It make the dragging easier too! You can contact me at my e-mail [email protected].
  4. Doc, I love my .270 and I don't even feel the recoil. My bother swears by his 30-06 but I prefer something that doesn't kill at both ends. I live in the City of Canandaigua and didn't have a place to shoot either. A few years ago I joined the Shortvilles Rod and Gun Club. They have a nice chunk of property and it is $35 per year for the family.... can't beat that with a stick! Where do you live?
  5. My property is in the Town of DePeyster in St. Lawrence County, Zone 6A. My friend and I who are members here also have a facebook forum called "6A Hunters" Look us up and join.
  6. Hi Ranger Clay, I hunt with Bubba and he referred me to this site. I llive in Canandaigua but my family is from Depeyster. My brother and I own about 67 acres of the family farm. Come join on on facebook "6A Hunters".
  7. Doc, I live in Ontario County too, the City of Canandaigua. I have two 19 year old sons and my younger brother (Mt. Morris) that hunt with me. We hunt about 45 acres in Hopewell and do a lot of hunting on some private land near Dalton and state land (Kinney Swamp) in Livingston and Allegheny County. We also have about 70 acres up north in St. Lawrence County Town of Depeyster) and hunt state land (Fish Creek Swamp) too.
