Crawled into a few beds this weekend the first was just because i got seperated from the guys i was with. trail i was walking on stopped at a thicket so i kept going and bam not to far in it was open as hell with beds. done that a few times and always find beds, seems like itss no problem for me to find beds. i do have issue with finding food, i look 4 scat to be sure if its food, if i find deer poop i usually find food close thats my tell tail sign. other than white oaks i dont know really how to tell what they eat in the woods. but when i find deer poop i usuallly find white oaks close. but with all the leaves its hard as hell to find the deer poop now. every time i think i figure it out, something comes up to throw me off. LOVE walking the woods though, but its like finding a needle in a haystack when looking for a stand spot. and yeah i carry a lighter to check the wind

HOW, whenevever i hunt i take woods roads, bike trails, and game trails. Have seen deer from afar, heard them in the brush near trails but have yet to get close enough. So i went thriugh the looking glass and into some real deep ish. Found tons of beds in little spots where u fotta crawll to get to. So niw im curious. Is it ok to put a stand up back there? Or is that to close to there bedding? Or should i keep to trails leading into it. Read somwhere u gotta hunt the sign. And im just tryin to do mire of that than worrying about how easy it is to get out.

Thanks. Just did the permit. Wana good place to take my kid and nephew. Not teying to bring them around sterling in rifle season. I keep hearing there are alot of deer in westchester so i been lookin into it. Just gotta do some scouting first. Pickin a spot is the worst part when u dont have easy access to an area

man wish I would have known that, my first year and I blew a weeks vacation on the first week of bow season. figured this out the hard way. next year I will pull an all weeker vaca leading into gun season -
the LIGHTER the better when hunting public land. I myself hike at least a mile in, farthest place I have to sit is about 2 miles in, this is my first year and I have been out a bunch. got good beads on a few spots and just narrowing it down. problem is hauling stands around that place is a PITA, my setup is about 35 pounds between climbing sticks and stand, I got it in on a hand truck, and it kept twisting around and falling, just purchased a deer cart and will try it out this weekend. weight is a PITA cant say it enough. for next year im getting the lightest equipment I can get, sticking my heavy stuff in a permanent spot way back hidden on some mountain I want to pull a big buck out of and moving to a setup that weighs less than twenty pounds. Big game treestand evolution I believe weights just 10 pounds, with either lone wolf sticks that weigh in at about 7 pounds that puts me just a bit over 17 pounds with a pack that weighs about 5 or 6 pounds with water ( I hydrate the entire day before and drink like half a gallon of water before entering the woods and carry about 1 liter for the day in a sawyer water bottle that doubles as an water filter if need be.

got this for my son:http://www.lancasterarchery.com/samick-polaris-48-takedown-recurve-bow.html figure I shoot recurve so that's what I know how to show him. I like take downs cause I can upgrade limbs, this goes up to 25 my son is 4 and pulling back 12lbs got this for my nephew: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PO5QW2/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 cause I figured it would be easier as he is two states away and has limited access to instruction, plus his mom isn't the biggest fan of huntin

So i sat 3 or 4 days last week and i am reasonably sure no one else is hunting anywhere close to my area. yet Saw one HUGE buck early in the AM and another nice one that was prolly 1 year and a half i know exactly the route they took but im about 30 to 40 yards away from the path i actually saw them walk out of their bedding area. dont want to move my stand cause i feel i should be a bit patient.got my stand on a trail that leads into thier bedding area from the east end and they left out of a trail that is closer to the western edge. grassy area that is surrounded by a creek gets a bit swampy then their bed then my stand. there are only a few places to get into it that wont leave you stuck in some pretty thick mud. they leave that area and head to food further west or food further east, all within a mile of each other. the food source to the east is closer though. trying to figure out if i dont see movement during the day when i go out there what would be the best time for me to leave stand and stalk a bit. not gonna stalk them as i dont wan to spook em outa the area, there is another spot where im sure some nice doe's are bedded down near the food source further west that i want to sneak up on. but im gonna be pissed if i leave stand and miss a shot. should i just sit it out and wait, or what time should i leave stand ? they were snorting and wheezing around 4 ish one day but all was quiet from like 11is 4is and i left about 6 30 latest one day as i dont want to lose im at night. would prolly take me like a half an hour to get to where i think the does are look around for an hour and head back in another half our if i move at a decent pace. thoughts? should i just sit out the stand the hole day or break it up. curious as to what others do

cool with me gonna , though i have no phone serice out that way.gotta get some communication goin out there. its a pita headin a few miles in. But i got a hand truck and a lifeline if need be. But they also supposedly drive the deer out for guys who truck way in.

Rain, had a decent poncho but coudnt put the hood on my head from my treestand, hat got soaked head got soaked wind made me cold. what kinda headgear can i get other than a shower cap, which i just may do and put under my hat. Quiver... HUGE headache, got a side quiver cause i figured it would be better than a back quiver as i have so much stuff to lug around on my back. quiver stuck time it got stuck to something i lost an arrows and had to backtrack once to find my arrow. kinda made some on the spot alterations with paracord that helped a bit. in the end i just strapped it to my backpack. whats a good quiver to use? dont want to use one for my bow. thanks in advance.

yup, heading back out next sunday. hopefully I can get out there a have him walk right past me. was cool as hell. though my entire body is soar from so much hiking huge PITA

hehe now I don't feel so bad . moved my stand a bit to right outside of a bedding area, problem is after I got there I realized there is food on both sides of the field roughly the same distance apart, got busted by two bucks in the AM and they of course went the opposite direction. didn't see anymore movement after the rain started and it didn't let up all day. since I was cold and wet im guessing they were to and stayed near food? meh hunt and learn
-
Ah didnt think much of it. Seen pics of guys in treestands and with deer all the time. Definitly gonna be headin back out tonight. Will move my stand a little better and hunt it tmw all Day

NO idea what a selfie is, first year out im still learning. i was heading back out this morning but decided it better for me to reduce my pack weight as there were some things that i know i am not gonna need after being out there two days and not using any of it. also i have a set of knives that is way overkill as it weighs prolly two pounds with the holder when i only need to carry the gutting knife and the skinning knife, figure wraping it in a bandana is just as good a holder got like 3 cheap flashlights when, like someone else suggested i only need one good headlamp. was looking around to find a good one. saw one that can light up a hundred yards in front of you, figure that will be great for going in at night. hehe im a work in progress

hehe hey Aaron, sorry i missed you guys. i was parked right near you guys, stopped in the visitors center to check out some photos to. i KNOW the dear are in there just a bit iffy about walking up on a bear.read a post where a guys says its a one in a million chance of crossing a bear up in sterling but i see the sign all over the place. passed a dead black snake as well, im pretty sure it was a rat snake, had one as a pet before and it bit me so i know its not venomous definitely gonna head back for rifle, im about a half mile past were all the bear bottles end hope that's far enough in. everytime i came on a spot that looked nice i would see some kinda trash somewhere, some looked new and some looked like they been there for ages. thought i was scouting humans for a second
-
yeah, just a pain in the ars to move my set up around. thing is heavy. Heading back up in the AM, gonna give this spot one more day and shift my stand to a trail maybe 50 yards away that i think i hear them walking late afternoon. after that im gonna hit a hillside they are bedding down on. the northside is all overgrown with thick brush and the south side is creek bed and oaks. gonna take me a while to get tired of it as i think i am gonna invest in another stand and just lug my climbing sticks in and out with me to save the one headache i have right now

So I spent my first two days in the woods, all day sits. would get in stand about 10 am or so and sit the day out. at about 5 30 6pm I get outa my stand and scout back to my car as I wasn't to interested in dragging a deer over a mile in the dark. wouldn't hear a deer till late afternoon around 4pm or so and i moved my stand twice and on both days late afternoon i could just hear em, never saw one. its thick where i hunt. there is a grassy field close to where i hunt im thinking about heading their but ive scouted the area im hunting pretty good and i know they are there, just need to get a good bead on the trails they are using funny thing is i havnt seen one rub. but i have seen plenty of bear crap all over where i hunt and i can see where the bears have been tearing down the trees. kinda keeps me from going in to early as i don't wana walk up on a bear and surprise him. do deer generally hang out in areas where there are bear? or do they keep it moving? there is another hill just a ways over were there are a lot of deer sign and i havnt seen much beer poo over there. freaks me out less to be over there.

Kinda pissed. Takes me a damn hour just to hike where i hunt and i cant get in the park till the sun is just about up. Pointless.
