What's everyone's vacation dates for this hunting season?
Vince1 replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
took the first week of bow off, past that just gonna be out on weekends and holidays. -
Can any one age this buck and would you shoot him
Vince1 replied to apoallo's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
If its the first deer i have a decent shot at, yup. I need meat, plus its my first year. If i take a doe first he lives -
Any old timer's want to help a young buck out?
Vince1 replied to Caveman's topic in General Chit Chat
Oh... I learned the hard way that the choices i made early on both helped me later in life as well as screwed me royally. Make good choices now and u screw urself less later. But u gotta make a choice and see it to the end or its a pointless effort -

Im only 34 but i got into accounting with only a 2 year, degree. Glorified bookeeping but its been good to me and pays the bills. Workin my way toward my cpa now. Slooooowly as i got kids and a wife and like enjoying life rather than killin myself. Would do it again because ive always managed to find steady work even when the economy was horrible. -
I have an ever changing plan. But i put so much time into scoutin stewart im gonna at least do eeek one bow there. Took a week off work for it. Read pochuk is good so if during that week i dont get any sightings i wil head overe there. Otis pike is my dont wana drive upstate spot for now. Headdin out to otis to give it another walk around. Looota work goin into this in hopes it pays off

So im guessing the people pulling down big numbers of deer per year arnt hunting public land. I will be bow hunting public land Pochuk/Sterling/Otis Pike and maybe Stewart in an attempt to bag a few this year. got my range up to a decent 18 yards at least i think its decent (traditional) so if they are under 20 yards from me and i dont freeze up, soups on. thanks for the input all, gives me something to shoot for. hopefully all the scouting pays off.

Interesting article on Fox News yesterday....
Vince1 replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
the rack on that deer looks terrible course they kinda had a point with "It’s no different than raising cattle that’s going to go on people’s tables," though I wonder what they do with the meat their. dont think i would want to eat a buck that had a rack like that -
just curious to know how many tags people fill a year. would be nice to fill my fridge, but being my first year im glad if it take just one.

cool, looks like a decent spot bout qaurter of on a trail off a hiking path on the side of a hill with two branching paths, one leading down to what i dont know yet. the other leading to a bedding area where i found one big bed and alot of droppings. thinking it would be a good morning stand spot if i can get in early enough. got a bit pissed when i thought coyotes were hanging out there.

Climbing sticks/separate sections/screw in steps?
Vince1 replied to nybuckboy's topic in Deer Hunting
I like climbing sticks, climber tree stands freak me out. -
So im doing my last scout before the season and I find: was in a beautiful spot that I found a nice spot for a tree stand. when I moved a bit further back I found the above skull, guessing it was a fawn. there was even still some fur around so it couldn't have been that long ago. im guessing it was a bedding area. would it be pointless for me to put my treestand near there now? or should I wait till later in the season, I was tempted to clear out all the bones a I figure a deer wont bed near a dead dear skeleton.

you will probably need an access permit: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/regions_pdf/newaccessprmt.pdf Ive been trying to find a spot out in Suffolk to hunt but find myself limited because im not a resident but if you are then: http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/Parks/RecreationalActivities/Hunting.aspx http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6072.html map at the bottom of page: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/40399.html

would a rottweiler serve as a good bird hunting dog? i have a 2 year old rotty and a 11 year old lab (that pays me no mind) and was kicking around trying to train the rotty. she great at finding trails in the woods and saved my butt twice with tthat nose of hers. just wondering as i was reading another thread about birding

I took that whole week off. Hoping the darkness helps my odds. Though this will be my firstpitch black night walk in the woods.

Yup. Bought a house in queens a few blocks from my mom. I got thirty years to go if i dont sell sooner. On the fence about a few acres of land up north as a weekend getaway for family and friends. Looks like i can get land for like 10 k and a little amish cabin for like 6k. Just not sure about the idea yet. 4hrs there is a pita

anything with a rack for me seeing as how this is my first year and all. only got space for one deer on my wall, as I take more I will move em around to the mancave in they basement. my general rule will be if its bigger than the last, take it, otherwise take a doe. keep hearing doe meat is better anyway.

I found a spot next to a highway that is blocked on all sides feels weird being out there but its blocked on all sides and someone has to be looking for it to find you. but I would much rather do it when I have my family with me, its a pita to drive out there. can you practice putting it up on state land with no issue out of season? im working on putting mine up in short order. took me twenty minutes to get it up, but that was because im still new to it. figure I could do it in ten easy once I have all the stuff set up right
-
nope im from queens, originally that was my plan. then I found out I couldn't hunt there. now im trying to figure between Otis and rocky point. had a guy tell me that rocky point gets packed but they have bigger dear there and its smaller so I would get closer shots and my range is only about 15 yards. said at Otis its more spread out and they have smaller deer their. so im having a helluva time choosing a LI spot. gonna go out there this weekend.
