Wondering if this panned out. I looking at putting Otis in my places to hunt column and would like to have a bunch of new hunters to learn with. this will be my first year going out myself.

My wife "allowed" me to spend a crap load of money on gear and If I don't bag a deer im not gonna hear the end of it I scouted about twice this year and got maybe two more in me. trying to find something a bit closer than upstate on the island and I think I found a spot but not sure how much time I will have to scout it so im just gonna pick a spot to go to after work and adjust as needed. weekends will prolly be my upstate trips but im still not to confident in the woods when It comes to scouting, can find plenty of sign, but have yet to see a deer in the woods. they wave at me on the road when I go home. just not in the woods.

Hubbards can only be hunted by Suffolk county residents. kinda sucks. just called the park and woman on the phone broke the news to me. saved me a long drive though. oh well

What are you guys hunting, geez. 44# recurve with my 30 DL. first year out and im only taking 15 yard shots if I even get a shot I figure I next year I will move up to 49# when im a more confident shooter with at least a decent 25yard range. 54# max when I start hunting bear in a few years. least that's the plan

Is anyone else having difficulty finding an open course?
Vince1 replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
I took my course out at victory archers in staten island, bit of a drive for me but well worth it. they were packed but I know they had no shows. maybe try calling the day before a class and asking if you can come and sit in and see if there are any no shows. might just let you join just cause you are there -

Nope dicks. Asked the guy what sterling was he said 3m -
yeah I wasn't sure but I guess that makes sense about them not clearing the ground. least I know where to find my turkeys picks are from sterling forest, don't thinik there are any pigs out there. figuring on spending most of my time there this season. was planning on going out there two more times, once next week to check out another part of the park and another time to do an all day sit from dusk till dawn to see if I can see were the deer are actually going. was gonna check out pochuk as I have a dmp for 3m and rocky point in long island as I have a dmp for there as well. I have NO idea what im doing and just learning as I go. im hoping if early season goes bad that late season snow helps me find them better. but I will definitely take some time to camp a deer trail branching off from one of the wood trails I saw, that makes sense if im not having any luck or seeing deer

ok second time out in the woods and I think im getting a bit better. found the below all over the place. I don't think they are scrapes cause there was no licking branch above most of em but im pretty sure they are beds? saw a lot of them solo by them selves in some thick stuff with a few trails close by and found one or two with a few patches all together. so is it something or nothing? Thanks in advance my dog walked through this one ( I know I tried to stop her) deer poop right next to a white oak close to what I think are bedding areas, if im right this will be my morning spot as its pretty high up but very easy for deer to get to my downwind side so im not sure and finally the last shot was a tease, the only deer I saw all day was when I was leaving around 7:30 right next to the road. im guessing they heard me and just kept outa my way or smelled my dog when I was back deep in the woods.

Went scouting this weekend and was on the fence about taking my dog. Wife made me take her but honestly I love having the company. problem is I didn't see one deer but saw plenty of deer sign, poop and what I think were beds. not exactly sure though. so we get to the top of a hill and start to make our way out through some pretty thick brush and my new garmin etrex 20 gets snagged on a tree and the lanyard pops. I don't realize it till we get back to the trail about 70 yards or so away when I go to check my bearings. I start to damn near give up and call it a day knowing my wife wont allow me to spend any more money on hunting gear. so I decide to go back and look for it but have no idea how cause it all looks the same, I find where we exited and tell my dog to go. she immediately starts following the trail we walked with ease and I use toilet tissue to mark where we look, I circle the area using the tissue as a guide and my dog leading the way, she keeps walking me back to this same deer spot that I took a photo of so I use that as a guide and backtrack to the last place I marked with the etrex. after we circle a bit more she sits about about 10 feet away from the garmin I LOVE MY BABY this is the second time she saved my but in the woods, we go DEEP

I have gone out once so far this year and think I packed waaay to much bringing my dog kinda helped cause he had a pack. After I realized I took a bunch of stuff I didn’t need so I have it down to this now and im going out again this week. Poncho First aid Kit 2 meals plus 2 snacks GPS / Maps / Extra batteries Headlamp plus small flashlight Light weight tarp Water filtration system (and tablets just in case) Bear bell I found at walmart, last time we didn’t start hiking out till the sun went down and there are bears where I go Will be adding thumb tacks and doing my scent control for the next round. Forgot about that last time got just enough time to wash it and hang it outside for a few days

Parks dont allow target practice, at least the ones i called. And i shoot traditional any shot i take will be under 15 yards and im more of a need to practice guy. Right now i practice in my home for the most part. Floyd bennet field has a range i can eadily get to, would just feel wierd takin my ladder out there. But it looks like i dont have much of a choice.
-
Thanks for the info. Yeah i got the nyc part and aftrr looking arround and calling dec. Wildlife i have come to the conclusioni cant target practice at all even in season. Which is wierd cause i see vids of people target shooting from tree stands. So is that a private land thing in ny? Is there no where i can put up my treestand and practice? A coworker was telling me bout a farmer she knows on long island whos crop whre destroyed so i guess i could go take a drive and barter vermin control. Just dont want the first shot i take from a treestand to be on a deer

Tried the dec dowload but no luck. Couldnt open the file. Was kmz. Will try again when i get home. Might be able to open it with the garmin etrex i just got. What about target practice from a tree stand. I live in queens and it would be nice to know aa place that dont take two hours to get to

So according to DEC website I can hunt squirrel pretty much anywhere after November 1. HOW, I was under the impression you couldn't even discharge a bow in the city within 500 feet of a residence and you cant hunt in any of the parks in Nassau. Am I missing something?

thanks, put the DVD in my net flix que and will be checking it out this weekend if it gets here in time. as for the green looking fruit thing after googling ossage and hickory nut im pretty sure its the hickory nut. I was confused because it was green and never saw one before. but there were plenty of old ones in the area that were cracked open. Do deer eat the hickory nuts? im guessing so. in the creek bed I was in there were plenty of the hickory nuts on one side were it was a pretty open area with white oaks and other trees I have yet to identify along with a lot of ferns and plenty of scat. on another side of the creek bed it opened up to a more swampy area that was very thick, I could only make it through there by walking a bit up toward the ridge. after making it home and reviewing my pictures I realized I missed sooo much. so many deer signs I should have taken a closer look at. learned a valuable lesson though, always bring a water filter, and always get there before dawn breaks, didn't have enough time to get there and look around properly. place I found seems to be a nice funnel with a break that leads to what im told is really thick swamp that I wouldn't be able to pass. its about 2 miles long and ima head back out there next weekend and get a better look around from start to finish of the 2 mile stretch. or at least I plan to, the park ranger I spoke to said that they frowned upon people walking off trails, which was odd because I figure hunters do it all the time. and thanks for the info on the first pick, I was thinking about setting my stand up near there as I thought it was a buck bed.

To bow hunt her u would need the permision of everyone within 500 feet. Correct? Thats alot of doors to knock on as im sure those houses are close

First time out scouting a small Valley maybe a two mile hike. need a bit of help figuring this place out. stand placement and such20130808193803.pdf found this were i marked the B lota questions but its late and im still at work. but im curious about these the most is this bear poop? and whats this its late, im tired, going home... later and thanks

cant understand why they rush to the expensive option first, that money could be used elswhere. if there was bowhunting up there during school hours or close that park for a bit i would love to take a short drive up tehre.

Again, thanks for info. Im into Archery so im good as far as Harriman, I asked if I could bring my bow in and they said it is suggested you don’t. So I won’t bring mine but my kids will bring theirs, they are 4 and 2 with bows that can hardly go far. I figure if we are a mile off a trail it should be an issue, a four year old pulling a bow aint gonna send it that far anyway. Bear Bag – do I really need this? buying a loaaaad of stuff from fishing to archery to camping gear for 3 plus my hunting gear, waders… trying to eliminate the stuff I can duplicate with things at home. So will simply hanging my food pack from a tree between two trees work? get it up maybe 12 feet? Also, when I go solo cant I just sleep with my dog in my tent? Or will that attract bears and coyotes? I wanted to take him hunting with me but ive seen mixed answers about this on the net. I read I can train him on small game, but that his scent might scare off dear. But if im down wind will it matter? Thinking about leaving him in the car when im after deer. Im still up in the air on this one

Thanks for the info. Definitly gonna check out stewart but scouting is an issue for me. Have to mix my scouting with family time. Wife is allowing me to sneak off as long as i devote some pool , hiking, grill time with them. Im allowed to sneak off and scout right before the kids take naps. So igotta gk where the kids will get the most action. The good thing is stewart is only a half hour norgh so i maaaay be able to pull it off. Im also allowed a few solo hikes so it alll depends on what i can map out the best. I want to hit the ground with a good game plan.
