Almost positive that New York is made up of more woods than fields and other agriculture, that's the advantage that the central states have over us. Honestly, I could care less about shooting a big buck. You can't eat the antlers or do anything with them except put them on the wall or make a pair of rattling antlers. Gun season is a good time to fill our tags and have our group get together and have a good time. Gun season is the only time we have to enjoy ourselves because we don't hunt with the bow and it's only 4 weekends. Do they notice that possibly giving more doe tags means that the overall deer population will probably go down? When shooting a doe, you are pretty much killing 3 deer because most of the time, well at least in my area, a doe has 2 fawns each year. I guess NY only cares about shooting a big buck rather than saving the population...

This is ridiculous. For in stance, opening weekend, I shot a spike BY CHOICE. I pay for my tags, $98 and am a young hunter. Want to get some kills under my belt and some meat for the freezer. WE ARE paying for our hunting license, WE should be able to choose what deer we want to harvest, whether it's a spike or a mature 8 pointer. Voluntary antler restrictions is the only logical choice they have in that article in my mind, but if they really wanted to find out what hunters want they would make us do a survey when we go to buy our tags next year. Instead they take a cheap way and only do a few hunters. This is overall stupid in my mind. Although New York has some large deer harvested, we all know and I have said many times that it will never be an Illinois or Texas type of state, no matter how many dumb regulations they pass.

Good point Antlers, I actually didn't even think about looking at that
-
I wish the picture caught if it was a buck or doe that passed by, but what could that hole be on the deer? Could it really be just an awful shot that healed?
-
Ok sounds good, hopefully we will be doing it sometime next week. Thanks guys

We had a really good Opening Weekend this year. Opening Day, I took a big spike and my Uncle took a very weird looking 5 pointer. Yesterday (Sunday) my Grandfather showed he can still shoot and took down a spike. Now this is the real question. This is only my second deer in my 4th year, my first was an 8 pointer that I had mounted. What I would like to do from here on in is put the antlers of my deer on one of those wooden plaques with the velvet skull cover. I think this would be pretty cool, rather than just having a whole bunch of antlers laying around the garage. Does anyone know what the process is to prepare the skull cut antlers to put on the plaque? We get the deer back from the butcher on Thursday.

For some reason i'm always sure to get one on every cam whether it be upstate or around the house. What I like about this one is it's kinda like it's posing for the picture

Just thought this was a really nice picture of a fox and figured I would share it. Red Fox really are a nice looking animal

My godfather and his 2 sons will be hunting in Delhi and my friend with his father and rest of his group will be hunting in Colchester. Both groups have been seeing some nice deer up that way, I personally will be hunting 4Z. Good luck!

I like that idea Larry haha. Realistically, I hope they come to their senses (which just by looking at them I don't think they will) and stop. If they don't, just stay away from my father's and my spots! Something tells me this guy would give a lot of trouble...and hopefully doesn't walk around with a machete while hunting. If I spot that thing, I'll be out of there rather quickly!

Cold cut sandwich, peanuts already out of the shell so there's no work, pretzels, a protein bar just in case and to drink in the morning a thermos of hot chocolate and water at lunch. I need to be able to enjoy myself out there

Hahaha Elmo, I would like to call both the regular police and definitely the fashion police! Who walks through the woods in a leather jacket?
-
Good comparison Irish. After looking closely at a picture from when they walked up to the camera, in the opposite hand of the knife on "Julian from Trailer Park Boys", it is a bottle of chocolate syrup...wtf?
-
I am honestly not comfortable at all, these guys were walking around right before gun season. Coincidence or scouting? They must have been scouting and i'm not comfortable on the property with random guys hunting with guns around us, and as much as I hate to judge people, these guys just look like trouble to me.
-
Got it. This bothers me a lot. Owner clearly said that no one else has permission.
-
I don't know how to put pictures up on here but the camera finally snapped some pics of the guys. They blatantly stare at the camera and walk up to it but i'm guessing couldn't take it because I have it locked up.
-
Haha Papist, I knew when I made the account that someone was eventually going to make a comment. Great sport indeed

Thanks for the ideas, I want to do as much as I can to get these guys off, but in the politest way possible. Like I said earlier and GMan too, I can't make enemies especially cause I am new to this property. With the amount of spots it looks like they have, either they don't care like the guys in that picture or they really know the area and have been there for years. I'll find out in a couple weeks when I'm out there with my 20 gauge every day!

This is a story from 1989 but my father passed it along. His biggest deer ever and biggest point wise ever taken in the area that we know of he shot around 11 am. He had just gotten down from his stand and met up with my uncle, they were standing there talking in the middle of the woods, which happens to be a very big bedding area. He noticed a decent size tree moving on a day with no wind, he saw an opening and he put a good shot and dropped him right away. I personally haven't seen many deer mid-day but just like my father, there has been many people with good luck.
-
She's not worried because she hates deer and encourages more hunters...even though they are running all over her property. Went back in there today, on the trail to my spot and about 50 yards from my father's spot stood a brand new ladder stand. Make that #4 that I've seen in there. If anything I hope these guys are bowhunters so we don't run into them during gun season. Not looking for any trouble.
-
Exactly why they should never have extended bow season, keep gun season the same and bow season opening mid October like it used to.
-
I completely disagree with a shorter gun season, we in my family are only gun hunters and bow hunters get a month and a half before the gun season begins. They have a chance to take all the good stuff out of the area, doesn't make sense to me on why they even extended the bow season.

I think that New York should actually take into account the amount of money we actually spend on this sport. 98 bucks for a super sportsman is a pretty penny and I want to be able to shoot what I want, whether it's a massive 8 or a little spike. I'm completely against mandatory.

NY DEC: Statewide Deer Hunter Survey Underway
ItalianHunter5 replied to burmjohn's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
There are 4 big game license holders in my household, hopefully we get at least one so we can at least voice our opinion. 7,000 is tiny in relation to how many New Yorkers get hunting licenses. -
Next Sunday we are, getting the big group together to go see. Between my father, my grandfather and I we have to sight in 14 guns, but that's our choice. We do it every year for all the rifles and shotguns, hopefully the weather will stay nice.
