I went last year and it was just dead. None of the trenches/holes were holding anything. Shore shelves were also kind of dead. It was just a bad weekend for us. I DID, however, catch this bad boy while sitting around a camp fire drinking at around 11pm. Dragged my pole about 20 ft into the water before I could catch it. If you are fishing from shore (north side of state park), it stays kinda shallow for about 20 ft, then drops off. Try to cast out past 20'.

I ordered 2 books from Tandy a couple days ago. Would still love some hands-on though. It just seems like a really cool skill to have!

Does anyone here have any experience with leatherworking? I'm not really talking about tanning, but working with cured leather. I have been researching for a while and would really like to start with small projects. Knife Sheaths, belts, maybe a rifle scabbard. I'm really a "learn by watching/doing" kind of guy, and would love nothing more than to physically get together with someone with experience and sit down for a couple hours and work a small project. Other than online, I wouldnt even know the first place to obtain leather to work with. I've researched tools and such, but it is actually an overload of information. Anyone?

I don't usually make any type of political posts at all, but I needed to say something. As I was walking by the break room at work, I noticed Hillary on the television. I didn't hear a word that was said, and only say the tagline running across the screen. "Hillary Clinton calls for Justice Reform" OK... Hillary Clinton, who just got away with treason because "She Didn't Know" she was breaking the law mishandling classified information, is calling for Justice Reform? Anyone else find this to be completely ridiculous? I spent many years in the military handling top secret material. You can't even imagine the penalty if I, even as a 19 yr old soldier, "mishandled" classified material. I really have no words, and I truly weep for the future of this country.

Thinking of fishing Silver Lake this weekend, weather depending. Never been. Any color/style tips? Heard it was good for Pike and LM Bass. Any insight would be appreciated.

Also interested! Looking for a variety of styles in watermelon and motor oil/crawdad. Also want to know about attractants or salt.

You would choose the McMillan platform over the Accuracy International? Granted, I would give my left eye for either (need the right to aim!), but I'm curious as to why you chose that way. Either way, I applaud your choice! That's what my wife calls a "Boner Gun."

Oh the Vulcan... (gau-4) They ran them at Drum all the time. The ones there hadnt been switched to the 30mm. Same thing though. That burp is pure shivers. The trenches they left were truly something to see!

Dream rifle? Accuracy International AX338. Love my rem 700 .308, but the AI is just on a whole different level. Like over 10x the level/price lol.

Shawn; I just received your package yesterday, and thank you. I have had some issues with mail since we are not currently living at that address, but they seem to be worked out. I really am grateful for the lighting system. It is a great step forward in getting back out there. Thank you so much! To all: We had an ...interesting Christmas. We do not have any family in the state, so it was just my wife and two children. (My oldest was home from college) It was actually kind of cool. We were 1 day into our apartment, no furniture or food yet. My wife bought a little Charlie Brown tree and we sat around it indian style passing out the presents we had rescued, as well as another package from a member here (Thank you!). We went to Denny's for food, then just hung out together playing cards. Very simple, very satisfying and very therapeutic. Thank you all for your support. It is appreciated by the whole family. Joshua

You all really do have my gratitude. Update for those who are interested: We may have secured a sub-leased apartment for a couple months, so we hopefully can get out of this hotel. We met with the adjusters and the advocates today, and it looks like our house is definitely out of commission for at least 6 months. Most items inside are able to be cleaned with the exception of anything fabric (beds, couches, carpet...etc). Insurance looks like it is covering everything house-wise, which is fantastic. Still working with Geico regarding the boat, car and truck. Definitely going to take big hits on those, but we'll manage. Ins. gave us an advance on living expenses today, so that covered most of our lost work and some of the food/cost of living expenses. We are keeping positive attitudes, and making the best of things. I give some credit for our mental well being to people like you guys. Your comments and support really do mean a lot to us. So, for me and my wife, Thank You. Joshua

I had someone tell me today that they wouldn't be able to accept charity in my position, and implied that do so so would be greedy... Allow me to rant for a moment as I am super pissed-off and I need to get this out before I punch someone. My family just had a huge fire at our home Thursday morning, as most of you know. NO ONE WAS INJURED! I am not forgetting that fact for a second, trust me. Our garage is gone, along with everything in it. That's 20+ years of accumulated "stuff." Both of our vehicles are total losses, burned to a crisp. Our boat (which I worked my ass off for and just brought home this last spring) is also ashes and melted metal. The house also caught fire, and while there is contained fire damage, the fire got into our roof and filled the house with smoke. Keep in mind that this is a chemical smoke from all the contents that burned, not your average campfire smoke. The walls, furniture, carpet, clothes and contents are mostly a total loss. The truck was loaded with my hunting supplies for a next day hunt I was planning, and the boat/garage had over 20 years of accumulated fishing gear locked down for the winter. Needless to say, the house is unlivable for the unknown future. We are currently living in a hotel. Yes, these are material things. Yes, it's only money and "stuff." Yes, we have our relative health and it could have been so much worse. Yes, others have gone through much worse than we ever could imagine. Yes, these are 1st world problems. Now to my point: Charity has ZERO to do with any of the above things. Charity is the people that care, doing what they can to show love and support: Friendship and just an overall caring for a fellow human. Charity is a gift that is not chosen by the people it is meant for. Charity in this situation is actually pure, with honest and honorable intent. People aren't helping us for personal gain, gratitude or recognition. The only possible way I can honestly show gratitude is to graciously accept and pay it forward in whatever way we can. That's what a "Community" does. So to those who claim they would not accept charity, and who look down their noses at us for accepting it; you can have my middle finger and my mental image of a foot shoved up your selfish ass. I need to feed my family for the next few months. And if you think that we are going to come out ahead financially after the insurance and construction are done, you need to stop using common core math. On that note: https://www.gofundme.com/ocampofamily - Share it with everyone you know and ask them to share it as well. /end rant

I just found out that the funding page is https://www.gofundme.com/ocampofamily Not sure how that all works, but since it was asked for, I will link it here. I'm uncomfortable even posting this, but there comes a point where pride just gets in the way of my family's well being. If you can, please share it on FB

I don't remember, either 28 or 29. I am pretty sure my bow survived though. The back porch where I store it was only partially destroyed and I havent been able to inventory everything due to my copd.

Phade; If they all still live there, tell them to drive by West miller street with the windows down. You can still smell it from a couple blocks away lol! We live right in the middle of town, just a couple blocks from wegmans. I was planning on hunting, but most of my gear is ashes. I was supposed to go out today for an all day sit, which was why everything but my gun was loaded up into the truck. That actually includes my tags and DMP's. Unfortunately, I still have the full set as I didn't have any luck this season. I passed a couple shooter doe during bow thinking I could get that decent buck that might be following. None were. Then gun season was just wierd. Never saw a single deer in 6-7 sits. Oh well. That just means next year I will drop 4-5 of those beautiful brown freezer fillers!

That facebook link was for the the pictures I posted. Not sure what the funding address is, sorry.

I'm an extra large top, and large bottom. I still have all of my good/warm weather bow hunting gear. Clothing wise, I lost all my cold weather and rain stuff, portable pop-up, stool, boots, gloves/hats, vest and balaclava. Basicaly 2 rubbermade bins worth of clothes, and a fully stocked hunting backpack. I am pretty sure my thermals and stuff are in the house, but due to my bad lungs and the smoke damage in the house, I really don't know. I'm working my itemized list for insurance, and just found out that my auto insurance will definitely not cover the items inside the auto. Still unsure if homeowners will cover it, but as far as I know so far we are way over the max allowed coverage anyway. I had no idea how much stuff I had accumulated. All contents of my garage (2 story, 2 car converted hay barn), All contents of the truck (hunting gear) and all contents of my boat. (2 peoples worth of gear/tackle, fishfinders, boat stuff, etc...) A friend of mine started a funding thing online, but I have no idea how that works. I just keep reminding myself how much worse it could have been. As I am itemizing, I realized that I had two full magazines for my Ruger in my backpack. I never store or transport ammo with my firearm. That's 8 rounds of .308 that cooked off during the fire! It could have been soooo much worse. https://www.facebook.com/Fehyd/media_set?set=a.10101539039274995.24417472&type=3

First of all, I want to say thank you. I'm sitting in a Quality Inn room, with my wife sleeping in one bed, and my 17 yr old sleeping in another. Luckily, my 18 yr old is still at his dorm in brockport. Little background on the dawn events: At 3 AM, I am woken up by someone frantically pounding on my door and ringing the doorbell. I open my eyes and my room is lit up like mid-day. I grab the wife, go downstairs and grab the kid, and bolt out of the house. As I leave the house, I look back and see that the garage and both vehicles are on fire. I rush my family across the street in fear of explosions. By the time I get across the street, the fire has trippled in size. The shear heat of it literally melted the siding of my neighbors house 30 yds away and the peak of my back porch had burst into flame. A teenager approaches me and I realize he is the one that rang the bell. He saw the fire from a street away, called 911 and races over to alert us. In the space of 15 minutes, the garage went from a fire that could be handled by a few extinguishers to a roaring blaze that chars all of the surrounding houses, shattering windows and melting siding. By 4am the fire was out, the garage was barely a skeleton, the car and truck are not even recognizable. It was so damn fast! If that teenager had walked by 10 minutes earlier, he wouldnt have seen it. If he were 10 minutes later, we probably would have died. (I looked for him later when I could think, and he had dissapeared. never saw him before, and never got his name) As I sit here, I am filling out my itemized loss listing. With my family finally peacefully sleeping, at 41 yrs old, I am feeling like I want to cry. I don't care how un-manly it makes me. To all you parents, you must understand what it takes to be the rock of the family. The steady presence that holds things from going over the edge of hysteria. It's a job I happily take, but it tears me apart. When I realize I was just a few minutes from losing everything, it literally has me shaking as it kicks in. I posted here because I had to get it out in a safe place, so as to keep my spirits up and to not let my family see me falter when they needed my strength. Again, I was not looking for sympathy or handouts. I didnt even have a need for people to read my post. I just needed to write it. (If that makes sense) To all those responding, and especially to those that are offering prayers and assistance, I cannot thank you enough. Even if I have no idea who you are, your support and understanding are priceless to me. I don't know what else to say. Thank you. Joshua O'Campo

It was electrical. Random halogen light just decided it was time to burn up. Hadnt even been turned on in 4-5 months. Just one of those random things.

Before I start, no one was hurt in any way. Material items can be replaced where lives can not! So I just all of my hunting gear with the exception of my guns and bow. If any of you live around Newark, NY, you probably already heard about this. My garage burned to the ground last night, taking both my car and my truck. The truck was loaded up for a hunting trip with everything but my firearm. Burned to a crisp. Believe it or not, it burned my boat to a crisp as well. That was loaded with my fishing gear (winterized and in locked compartments). I am starting to itemize everything for insurance, and it is just now hitting me how much I just lost... I know, I know... My family and I are seriously the luckiest people on earth that the fire did not take the whole house, or hurt anyone. I know my losses are just "things." I've been optimistic and positive, staying strong for my wife and kids all day. This happened at 3am on the 10th, and I am mentally fried. I'm sitting in a hotel room, hitting a breathing treatment on a nebulizer for smoke inhalation and just not feeling that lucky. My losses are close to double what my limit of insurance coverage allows for "Other Buildings" Not looking for sympathy, not looking for insurance advice (we have NFA working for us). I'm just venting to people I don't know to avoid venting this petty garbage on my family that needs my shoulders. 2 rubbermaid bins of cold weather gear, scents, calls, boots, gloves, knife, flashlights, backpack... Hell, my (loaded) magazines for my ruger american cooked off as my backpack burnt to ashes. Interested in pictures? https://www.facebook.com/Fehyd/media_set?set=a.10101539039274995&type=3&pnref=story but... I'm alive and so is my family. vent over. carry on

Remington, Ruger, or Savage?
Fehyd643 replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Ruger American for me. I own a .308 American as well as a 700SPS .308. Nikkon on both rifles. Both are tack drivers, but I'm only willing to truck the ruger through the woods. For the prices, I'm not going to bang up a $650 rifle in the woods when I can bang up one that costs a lot less and does the job just as well. Plus, the Ruger is much lighter, shorter and way more maneuverable. Shoots <1" @ 100yds with 150 grain Remmy Express Core Lokt. (tried Fusion and a couple winchester styles, but the Core Lokt shot more consistently). The mag feels loose, and makes me a bit nervous, but a few hundred rounds and still no issues. My hunting buddy just recently purchased a Savage 11 combo. Hated the scope and switched it out immediately for a ProStaff. He loves the gun, but I have no experience with it. -

Flock of turkeys just set up shop about 100 yds from me in some thick pines. Pretty sure they are building a log cabin with all the noise they are making...
