  3. Well guys got out this am for a half day hunt with guide Dennis ,from DC OUTDOORS. Hunt took place close to Riverhead, on a private farm . There was alot or rabbit sign, but rabbits were really holed up tight, maybe because of the low pressure coming in. Either way the snow was deep and had a coat of ice on it, dogs jumped about 6 rabbits, and got 1,shot and hit another, but got into a wood pile and lost him ,(hate that). Had another that could of shot at but was not sure of distance from homes , so decided to let him go. All rabbits were goin straight to hole. As far as dog work goes, I would say ok at best. They could hold the scent in brushy area but in the open really had tough time. All in all, was a nice day, and was glad to be out there with Dennis, he is a straight shooter and look forward to going out again. Any body else get out today??
  4. Dave I do hunt that area but have not been up there in over a month. You may to want to go on better beagling website, and post question for snow depth. There are many guys on that site from up there. GOOD LUCK>>>
  5. Hey guys I am hunting tomorow hopefeully on island for rabbit, and will be wearing my snowshoes, as the snow is pretty deep and hard to walk on. Will post outcome either way
  6. Arrow, I do not know the other areas you mentioned, but a good area is Speculator. You can hunt off the roads on rte 30, pretty much anyplace that has a swamp or thick pines will hold hare there. Let me know if you need more info.. There is a parking area just south of speculator, and if you cross rte 30 on other side of street , there are plent of hare to run there. If nothing going on, head north and anyplace that has a thicket on rte 30, will have rabbit sign ..
  7. gino relax my friend I havent spoke to bob about anything but when I could hunt shotgun in mattituck, and have not myslef rabbit hunted at the club since mid nov. I defend nobody, and ripping you on tel is not really the right thing to do. I myself may not rejoin next season, but that is my problem. all I have told anybody who asked me about club is to go there and make their own decisions, do not consider that defending it.
  8. jon , I was told the prop upstate was all shot out ,thats why didnt renew, guess the truth came out. also the response given to you on the quads was not the right thing to say to somebody. as a paying member you should have been given an explanation.
  9. geno, never said I would go on any posted property not belonging to the club, nor do I think anybody should . the comment on us bird hunters and rabbit hunters is kind of rough dont you think. I nevr hunted any of the gun club props knowing there is a deer hunter going there out of respect. I pay my dues just like all members and basically have to waite until all deer hunting is over to hunt. you were a member did u see me and my dogs on any occasion?
  10. Renfru, did hear some stories about dec actually coming onto the property and checking licenses during a hunt. I am sure the property next door if off limits as there are many posted signs, and that is where the deer are, it is very thick
  11. jon, never said didnt believe, just hate to hear. I guess I dont get affected hunting rabbit as much as the deer hunters do,hate to hear because long island is very limited for places to hunt, and one day in the future we may not be able to find any private prop to hunt
  12. I gun hunted the club , the mattituck property, did not see any quads there. As far as deer go, my hunting partner seen 2 small 4 pts and, a decent 6ptr, he decided to hold off waiting for something bigger, but never came. I did not see any bucks, only does, and truthfully unless was a 140 class deer or better I would not shoot , not a big fan of venison, and already have few mounts, so would have to be bigger than what I have for me to shoot especially with shotgun. Really hate to hear the horror stories on the club, as the properties seem to hold deer . I did see alot of tracks in the snow, just not when I was there.
  13. Thanks for response guys. Yes I wish she would of brought to me but, she did bring it out of the woods. I just got her about 2 months ago,and don't think she ever retrieved, I think she actually wanted to take away from others, before they took from her.
  14. Well guys, got out little late this am, but the real feel was close to Zero. There was a couple of fresh inches of powder on crust from last snow storm, and when you put your foot down the snow was squeaky, and not to make excuses but we all know what happens in those conditions. Anyway got few video clips, with 2 different dogs retrieving, one after the best run of day which lasted about 20 minutes, the three dogs in that clip are Pup e ,Pebbles, and Mandy. All together shot 2 that were circled by dogs, and missed another. Dogs did jump another 3 or 4 that I actually could of shot at, but I let them go with the hopes of the dogs bringing them back around , and wether they lost them or holed up, either way they did not bring them back around, which kind of upset me. But hey, at least got out and enjoyed the day, all in all seen about 8 rabbits in from 9am to 2pm, and I was hunting solo Pebbles retrieves PUP E,Pebbles and Mandy retrieves after best run of day Pup E,Shimp and LULU start a rabbit on cold day, ended up shooting at and missing this rabbit www.bellmorekennels.com
  15. thanks guys Geno, I was hunting on wetland properties in Southhold, on the north fork. Alot of deer sign at first spot., but all swamp no trees to setup in for them, it is a bedding area, surrounded by oopen water and marsh
  16. I would also be interested in info on this or any club on long island.
  17. Frank responded to your pm, please let me know that you received
  18. Frank, I am a member, the cost depends on what you want to hunt. I would try to call on tel, as not sure if they check emails or not, let me know if you need their number ,as i have it.
  19. Well went out for a cottontail hunt today, was 7 degrees, when left the house and warmed up to about 20 in afternoon. There was about 16" of powder everywhere and somespots even more. So here is the breakdown and some pics, got video footage, but not the greatest, and kind of uneventfull, but you can get idea of my hunt. The Good- Dogs hunted hard, no standing around, and we hunted in deer bedding areas, loaded with deer, and NO deer runs!!! One run lasted about 30 minutes with my Swiss hound and my youngest male, after shot the rabbit ,he retieved for me!!! The Bad- Snow was overwhelming and the rabbits were actually running in snow tunnels under the weeds with snow on top, so where impossible to see. The Ugly- Out of about 8 rabbits jumped, dogs only really ran 1 or 2 for a complete circle, the other runs were choppy at best and resulted in losses or rabbits going straight for a hole. All in all better than working or staying home and wishing I went out. Should be going again on Monday, so will post again. www.bellmorekennels.com Here is video before got to my hunting aree: Hunting spot 1 Hunting spot 2
  20. Hey guys was at Hither Hills on Saturday trying to find a decent area to run rabbit, I did see some sign, but not much, I had one decent run with my dogs, but did not want to shoot the rabbit as not that much sign, and at least I know he still there to run again someday. Just wanted to know if anybody has seen any really thick areas that would hold rabbits at either park, thanks for any info. If anybody has a good area, you are more than welcome to come along on a hunt, as I usually hunt solo with my dogs. www.bellmorekennels.com
  21. Hey guys, i know opening week for li shotgun, just wondering if anybody noticed any good rabbit sign in the snow, please any general area would be great, so I could hit in feb with my dogs, thanks in advance for help www.bellmorekennels.com
  22. Hey guys finally got out this am, and had to run on a mix of snow/ice/and mud. Had 2 feet of snow on monday and with 70mph winds the dirt flew onto the snow, and it all froze up and started to melt today. The dogs did ok, but I never ran on anything like this before, Crazy conditions, ended up getting 4, missing 2, dogs ran another 1 into hole, and seen another 2 that dogs really could not run very far. Here is a video clip and some pics Dogs in video are pebbles(patch),mandy(catrons kennels),and shimp(branko/buckshot mr bill)
