What is the best choke for rabbit hunting

Dinsdale, thanks for info, it does seem the bullets are very close in size to a 20 guage, yet cost double per box. Have always wanted to reload, but never really did it, may be a new hobby for the off season, is it hard to do for a beginer? -

Pygmy thank you ,after 20 years, of raising dogs and chasing rabbits, you kind of figure what puts the most edible meat on the table, I just purchased a s/s 28 guage during the summer, and have not shot it yet , I did get low brass 6 and high brass 6, every gun will have loads that work best with it. I have a franchi 20al, that is unreal with winchester game loads lowbrass 6 upto 35 yds away, just aim in the direction lift over the head, and pull trigger, a couple bbs in the head will kill a rabbit. Also have a semi 410 that shoots 3 inch, high brass 6, with snow on ground, can kill a rabbit upto 45 yds out no problem. Again, these are my experiences. Again, I am big on having edible meat and not a piece of meat full of bbs and fur, would rather miss completely ,than destroy a rabbit. www.bellmorekennels.com -
LONG ISLAND Rabbit Hunters?
bellmorekennels replied to bellmorekennels's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Rich, it is hard, but there are spots, I just had this conversation with a friend and fellow hunter that just met last year. I have about 6 to 8 decent spots on LI, between private, gun club, and state properties, I also go up to orange county were have another 4 to 6 spots, . I used to have double that on long island alone, and there used to be alot of rabbits, and NO tree huggers!! -
Hey guys, just wanted to see how many of us are left that actually rabbit hunt on Long Island, and how many guys going out On Nov 1? www.bellmorekennels.com

20 guage Improved cylinder #6 low brass, is plenty for cottontail, and high brass for hare. Especially in long island , never use high brass, I prefer winchester or fiocchi. 410 in modified #6 high brass, but I usually waite until january for the 410, especially on long island. www.bellmorekennels.com -
Karp, let it go, it sucks ,but let it go. I was rabbit hunting upstate sunday on club, and a guy was bow hunting, no car parked anywhwere, and was not part of club, claimed his buddy knew the property owner. When I tried to talk to him, he just kept walking away, do not let it ruin your hunts, roll with punches, believe me , even happens on your own private property if you owned it.

maybe fake, definitly something going on with boot, but if real, that is a monster, gino does your buddy know the person that sent to him?

Well guys got out today for first time, went to new gun clubs i belong to in NY, and had a really nice day!! Forgot my camera, so was a little upset, sorry guys. Went like this ,830 am. pulled up to a farm where they plant clover, dogs went 20 yds into a thicket and the race was on, (i was thinking too easy, deer for sure), but with 5 minutes the rabbit basically jumped out less than 5 yds from me, too close, so let him go, dogs ran him for another 10 minutes, and he holed up. Walked another 50 yards, another jump, never seen him, but they ran for 20 minutes or so , at which time a bow hunter came walking towards me, so I called in the dogs on a loss ,turned out he wasnt even part of gunclub, and was upset that guys ruin his hunt, I leashed the dogs out of respect, but truthfully he didnt park in designated parking area for club, so the was no way for me to know he was there, but I am sure he was there since first light so, I moved on to another spot, but I found An awesome spot to return to. About 11 am pull up to another spot with same gun club, all corn fields (200 acres or so) with rows and irrigation rows with thickets and swampy brush, again right out of truck a jump, again i think too easy, maybe a fox. Again ,wrong, see the rabbit 200 yds away, they turn him coming right for me , less than 30 yds away they pounding , I see nothing so now I am saying GREAt, ghost trailing or backtracking, then right in front of me, my male PUP E pushes him out of a thicket almost caught him, now too close to dogs , NO Shot, again they go out to 350 yds on my gps, and they loose him, maybe holed up or maybe lost him in corn, either way 45 minute run. We move opposite direction and jump another , run lasts 20 minutes in te corn, I never see him, and they loose him in the corn, Oh well , that is the way it goes. Again no rabbits in the bag, BUT, another new great spot , and spoke to farmer, once groung freezes, they will cut corn, at which time , I WILL BE BACK.. Did also scout 2 other spots ,but brush was almost upto my chest, so did not even put dogs down, will have to waite for frost or snow, but anothr nice looking spot!! I get my kids some pumpkins and apples and donuts, and head home, NO RABBITS, but feel like I just bagged my limit!! http://www.bellmorekennels.com

geno, thanks, I hoping to go upstate this week sometime, and will hit my gunclub on the island nov 1 and 2, but will stay away from public spots till end november, I do not want to push a buck off state land when hunters have the best chance. So I hope to see some pics soon, lol. All kidding aside good luck...

Karp, Geno, come on guys, keep on checking the site, and hoping to see pics of you guys with a smile and a big buck!!!! I might be able to get out the end of this week one day, and finally get some footage with the beagles, supposed to cool off, can not waite!!!!!! Have a question for you guys, I do not really hunt state land on long island in the beginning of nov., when do you guys think the rut will be on the island, as I do not want to ruin any chances for somebody to bag a buck during prime time.

Hey Karp, I sitting home with kids, wishing was out how thing looking? Geno you out there?

Hey Big indian, used to have property on oliverea road, 3 miles off rte 28, alot open woods there, and steep climbing. Not many deer but the ones that survived those winters, were nice bucks. Got my first deer there, a decent 8 pointer, but wieghed in at close to 260lbs. Much easier on the island, lol.. have not hunted there in like 15 years, but heard still pretty much the same. Welcome to the board, what part island you on? www.bellmorekennels.com

Steve, I have been there, Had a guy supposed to mow lawn, didnt do it for 2 months, when I got there had to spend 2 weekends cutting hay. The same year had my toilet crack and spill water for a week before I got there and shut it off. Again 4 weekends to remove carpets, replywood, and install new flooring. Then there was the upkeep with property and the joy of pulling up to your property when had 2 feet of snow that turned into solid ice, and shovel that from the main road to the house, like 200' long. Then go hunting the next day, and find footprints, blood and gutpiles less then 200 yards from my house. So I think for a while , I done with weekend home, when I can spend more then 2 days there, I will look into again. Great, if semi reitred with the time to go.

Geno, will keep you update when I finally get up there and rabbit hunt on how deer sign looks, dont let one bad experience ruin your outlook, I belong to another club for almost 20 years, have never had a problem, they used to have like 10 leases, they only down to 2 now, but again for the price I pay, worth every penny. Hopefully me ,you and karp get together someday, and will talk a little about some things....

Geno, I joined 2 clubs for like $400.00 a year, have access to almost 3000 acres , some spots I looked at , looked unreal for deer, less than 2 hours away, next to apple orchards, corn fields and onion farms. If you interested ,let me know. I used to have 40 acres near Liberty, me and a friend turned it into a hunters paradise, the unfortunate part is that we, and I am sure you too, have to work, and are limited to actually going, so the locals were killing alot deer on the prop. We sold and were able to double our money at the time, but be careful and make sure it a wise investment. The other downside, if there is a house on the prop, is the work to be done all year long, at that is my line of work, but found too much work with minimal return, and almost ended up either shooting at or getting shot, by a guy insisting he new the owner of my property, so that was enough for me. I now enjoy the freedom of going where and when I want and not being tied down to my property. Again guys, this just my personal experience, not looking insult and point of views. we all have our own horror stories, and yes gun clubs can be a pain too, but if it does not work out the investment in minimal. I know a farmer on the east end that been speaking to that would lease the property he has for the right price, I have permission to rabbit hunt there. I went out there during the summer but he already had leased for the season, I went the end of august, but maybe next year if a few of us get together, would def be worth it, he has almost 200 acres, and a shot and missed a 8 and 12 pointer 3 years ago in the same afternoon. Wuggzwest, here is some info that might help,http://www.ocfsc.org/site/lev/MEMBER-CLUBS.htm, from there you will have to either google each club and call on telephone, email or write to them, it took me alot of work to get that info and finally contact them, but I am a member of couple clubs now, and worth the work and time. Truthfully though you may be too late for this season, as most clubs have already reached their membrship limits, but you never know, give a try. Plus some clubs gear towards birds other towards big game , you will have to research bellmorekennels

LIwaterman, that would be a great idea, and in a perfect world that stand with note would be there when you want to go back. BUT, since your stand is an a heavily used area, I would get the thickest chain and lock you can find. Another thing I would do is put a cheap trail camera about 20 feet away, at the tree stand level, and really hide it well, so you can get pics or video of whomever goes up on your stand, I know a pain the neck to do, but if you have proof of anybody tampering with your stand, and then go back someday and find the same guy in the area, I would love to see him talk himself out of that. GOOD LUCK, The Air feels COOL....
-
cbx, sounds like the guy with those stands didnt like anybody moving in on his area. When I used to hunt deer alot, I would only put out the cameras at night and remove the next morning, and even then Somebody stole 1. Also on private land that I have permission to hunt, I have had 3 metal tree stands stolen from me. Then the next season while rabbit hunting , I came accross 2 of them few miles away from where they were stolen. I have also had 4 of my beagles stolen from me,from my kennel, from a guy I knew for 15 years. It is sad to say, but anytime something you have is vulnerable and unguarded, there is a good chance it will be stolen. Alot guys have jeoulasy issues and others are just plain A--holes that are thieves and refuse to buy their own equipment. Sorry this happened to you, do not let it get to you, hunting season is too close. bellmore
