  1. If you're looking for affordable, I have a CVA wolf. Gun, scope, sling, and basic supplies were less than $300.

I also have a T/C Hawken I picked up at a gun show for $200.

Can't really go wrong either way.

  2. Two years ago we moved my friend's ladder stand at noon on day two of the season. She shot the biggest buck any of us have seen in the woods from that stand that evening. I say go for it if you think it's a materially better place.

  3. What are the stats on the distribution of gun kills throughout the season? I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that more deer are killed in the first week anyway. How much would the shorter season reduce the take?

  4. I usually use Barnes but got a good deal on Federal Trophy Copper. 130 grains in the .270. Bravo to all you lead-free guys!

I'll admit it's for selfish reasons on my part. My wife and I will be having kids in the next few years, and the science is pretty clear on lead's effects on cognitive development. These kids are already starting life with half my genes. Why handicap them further?

  5. I learned that you can't let your arrows fly until your clock strikes that magic number. And you can't shoot after your clock reads that other magic number. No matter how well you can see and no matter how many minutes or seconds you are within that magic number.

And just like that this thread crashed without even leaving the runway.

  7. My buddy texts me at least 4 times a day with new weather forecasts. SO far it has gone from sunny and 70s to snowy and 30s, to torrential downpours, and back. I'm done. I'll just wake up Saturday morning and be surprised.

  8. but if I cross an invisible man made line I can shoot that deer 30 minutes after sunset... I can smoke that weed... I can marry my cousin...

If you're ethics are defined by the government; let alone THE FREAKING NYS GOVERNMENT than I feel for you man. I define myself by how I was raised and my religion, not by politicians.

Not to detract from your point, but you can marry your cousin in NY. I suppose that's even more reason not to let politicians define your morals. Carry on.

  9. So this illegal behavior is due to the fact that there was a moral or ethical question to the law which makes it hard to adhere to... or maybe the illegal behavior happened because of the persons inability to do something as important as kill a deer within the time frame provided by law...$ See we aren't talking about a law that, let's say, goes against our Constitution... we are talking about the shooting hours law... which is very clear and equally fair for every hunter. No rights are taken away from anyone... and it gives no hunter in NY an unfair advantage over another. Not sure I see the problem. If your shooting outside the allotted time frame you are being unethical based on the rules of fair chase, plus your giving yourself an unfair advantage over the law abiding hunters that would have had an opportunity at the deer that you are poaching.. yes, it is poaching by definition.

I can get behind that. Poaching is unethical because it violates principles of fair chase and deprives others of their legal opportunities. It is not unethical, however, simply by virtue of being illegal. That's all my point is.

  10. To be clear, I'm not defending poachers. I'm simply pointing out that tying your ethical views to the law in an absolute fashion, as some have, is a dangerous proposition. This is especially true when the laws are written by arguably the least ethical group in society.

Are poaching and human rights violations the same thing? Of course not. It just isn't a good idea, in my mind, to say in absolute terms that a person who breaks the law is automatically a morally corrupt individual in all instances.

  11. How you feel and what is ethical are two different things... if your the type of person that is okay with breaking the laws, like them or not, your ethics and your integrity are in question. Trying to rationalize it with the "how you feel" argument is, again, trying to justify what you know to be wrong. Because you don't feel like a sleaze ball, doesn't mean you aren't one. Good move though trying to defend the indefensible by throwing in the extenuating circumstances argument...another feeble justification for what you still know to be wrong.

You're right it doesn't make you a monster to take a deer 3 minutes after sunset.. it does however speak to your integrity. This conversation however started with a guy that had no idea that sunrise and sunset was an actual time... didn't read the rule book... and didn't much care what the rule was... If you don't think that is unethical, I'm gonna start calling you Hillary!

You don't think it's a bit of a stretch to say that your ethics are always in question when you break the law? As a general matter, I mean. After all, at one point in time it was a violation of federal law not to return a runaway slave to his owner. It's admittedly an extreme example, but I don't think you can make a blanket statement that it's ALWAYS unethical to break the law, or that your ethics are even automatically "in question." I don't like people shooting deer after sunset mostly because it deprives law-abiding hunters of a potential opportunity, but the moral absolutism gives me as much pause as the devil may care attitude of the OP.

I should mention that I don't shoot deer outside legal hours. It's just not worth risking my hunting license.

  12. Without wading into the substance of this thread, what I think is most interesting here is how many people tie ethics to the law. What I mean is how many people consider it unethical just to break a written law without any regard for the nature of the illegal behavior itself.
