Finally, some decent bucks...
VT Outfitter replied to WNY Bowhunter's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Those are some great pic's! Some great genetics, you are in for some great hunting I think. -
Both are great bucks! It is so exciting to get those pics in early season. Gives me drive to sit on stand longer, an more like a statue, even if I decide not to shoot them. They came from somewhere, so daddy could be in the area about to walk in to assert his dominance. Good luck!

My estimate for age for the top left buck is 3 years old. I would score him at 100 inches +/- with 11 scoring points. My estimate for age for the top right buck is 4 years old. I would score him at 128 inches +/- with 8 scoring points. Both great bucks, nice pics!

Very good shooting. I have to get out and do some practice. Just hard to make the time this time of year.

IT'S ALIVE!!!! I have created a monster! I have used the small hand crank seeders for ever to seed my food plots. I really wanted something bigger that holds more seed and can spread seed farther. One of the nice ATV seeder/spreaders would have been great to have, but not in the budget for this season. So I looked on Ebay and found an auction for a used walk behind lawn seeder that needed to be fixed. I won the bid at $20 with shipping. When I got it UPS, I fixed the seed amount adjuster cable and now it was ready for use, so I thought. This spring while planting a small 1 acre food plot, I brought the newly fixed seeder to try it out. First thing I noticed was the drive wheel didn't turn very well in loosened soil, second I noticed that even when adjusted to a very small opening the seed would just fall out the front unless you sprinted across the plot. I don't know about you, but I save my sprinting for emergencies only. So, out came the hand cranker seeder to finish for the day. I spent the last few months, on and off, thinking about what I could do with this seeder that just plain wont work. So this is what I decided to do. I took the frame and wheels off, leaving the spreader paddle thing and the seed tub. I had a very expensive 12 volt air pump for a rubber raft that quit producing air pressure years ago. I pulled the pump from the "don't throw it away pile" in the shop and took it apart. After taking some measurements, I built with leftover hardwood flooring a small frame to attach the pump. I affixed the paddle spreader to the electric motor, attached the frame to the seed tub, then enclosed around the motor/spreader so I wouldn't take a seed in the eye. I salvaged an old rheostat head light switch from an old van and mounted in in the side of the spreader to control the speed of the spreader wheel. I had an old 12 volt ciggy lighter plug in spot light that the switch didn't work, it was also in the "don't throw away pile". I used the cord from the spot light so I could plug into my ATV. Where the shaft from the top of the spreader wheel goes into the seed tub, I attached a zip tie so when it spins it will stir the seed. I put the seeder machine on the front of my ATV and use the winch cable to hold it down so it doesn't fall. REBIRTH OF THE FRANKENSEEDER! I have used it 3 times now. It works great with all sizes of seed. I can still control the amount of seed that falls with the original adjuster cable lever mounted temporarily on the handle bars. I does not work for packy material like lime or very small grain fertilizer as it compacts from the vibration of the ATV.

VT Outfitter replied to VT Outfitter's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Exactly! I absolutely enjoy having fun and a good laugh. So far, I think this is ok but I know it will get funnier. I have read some of the comments on other threads where it seems to me that members are looking for an outlet for goofin' around. Hence my idea of starting this. I am definitely a goof, so I hope this keeps going! -

Very cool, and some funny comments. I thought it was fun. Someone post a new photo to keep the game going. -
I wax my string on the bow 5 r 6 times per year, seem to work for me. I shoot enough between 3-D shoots, practicing, and league shooting that I replace my string every 2 years after it starts to get fuzzy. I have always thought, I cant remember if someone told me or not, that waxing the string was to prevent water from getting into the middle and rotting the string on the inside making it unsafe but not obvious on the outside.

WHY YOUR TRAIL CAMERA ONLY HAS A COUPLE PIC'S "You didn't win Doeloras, it was close, but I crossed the line first"..........."lets check the camera for a photo finish"..........."I cant tell, let's delete this pic and try again". -
I Just wanted to play around a bit with a pointless game. If you want to, try to post a funny one-liner or phrase for this trail cam photo of 2 Doe's running from the camera. If this game becomes popular, then someone should be a judge to crown a winner for each photo, with a prize of some good laughs. Maybe even make it a regular thing. I am sure you all can come up with funnier photos than this one, let's see where this goes. I will go first.

These are nothing to right home about, but the time of the photos taken along this log road certainly explains not seeing this group during legal hunting hours.

Re Built Disc Harrow For Food Plots
VT Outfitter replied to VT Outfitter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Thanks for the comments! It cost me around $70 to bring it back to working condition. Its not pretty, but it works well, and that's all I need it to do. It is gonna get a work out this week starting today as I am starting my fall food plot planting. I only have about 4 acres to do, but its broke up into quarter to third acre pieces and a couple half acre plots so using the ATV with this harrow is going to be nice. I am also just finishing a Frankenstein electric seeder/fertilizer spreader that sits in front rack area, uses ATV for electricity, and spreads the seed out while towing my homemade roller rig. Field testing the Frankinspreader and I will post it up tomorrow.- 4 replies

Homemade Towable Food Plot Seed Roller
VT Outfitter replied to VT Outfitter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I thought about using cement, sand, and gravel while planning to build this roller. What I was trying to achieve was a light weight rig during travel. With the drum empty and un hooked from my ATV of course, I can throw the roller around like nothing even carry it one handed off the ground with ease. If I filled it with gravel, though it would be heavier for rolling over the food plot, it would be heavy all the time. Heavy to hook up to the ATV and heavy to transport in or out of my trailer. So, I bring a garden hose with me and fill the drum with water half way, until it starts leaking out, after I have it hooked up to my wheeler and ready to go. I drive slowly to the plot, sure I lose some water out the holes in the end of the drum. But that's ok cause I have 40 lb cement buckets I can put on if I needed to. So far I haven't needed any extra weight and the amount of water lost seems to be very small. When I am done rolling the plot down, I can just un screw the cap where I filled it, drive forward until the hole is so it will leak out to empty again. I even thought about putting the water in a basin tub for those dry years when the food plots need water, as the drum will carry 22.5 gallons. But we have had no lack of rain in my area in the last few years, that is for sure! Thanks for the thought and participating on my post.- 18 replies

it is best for me not to find one of these zipcode/credit card stores on a morning that I haven't had my coffee yet, sounds like a recipe for disaster..................................just kidding.

I made a homemade roller to pull behind my ATV. I used a heavy duty plastic 55 gallon drum. I cut a hole in each end in the center of the drum. I then pushed a metal pipe slightly smaller than the hole I drilled. Then I made a frame out of leftover hardwood floor planks to connect to the metal pipe on each end and around the drum. Then I made a drop pin connection point to hook onto the ATV draw bar. I fill the drum half full of water through one of the screw caps on the top of the drum then replace the cap to hold the water in. Water will leak out where the metal pipe goes through the drum until it brings the level down when it will stop leaking for the most part. The drum half full (or so) with water and the hardwood frame weighs about 200 lbs. It works well to pull over a well prepared food plot bed to push the seed down for good germination contact.

I hate having to prepay for gas, and I too have driven off to the next station. I get a bit annoyed when a store asks for my zip code too. My point I was trying to make is that if you are buying a product with legal intentions, like when you buy ammo from Walmart or coleman fuel, you have to show your id. Just a question, why would you be buying bait at a shop, when you would be asked for your license, and get offended for that request?

I found a old disc harrow this last spring. It was in a hedge row, long forgotten, rusting away doing no good for anyone. It is a 6 disc solid wheel harrow, 3 discs per side, with adjustment levers for disc angle. I had to weld one of the axel supports and grind off 95% of the bolts holding it together as most of them were rotten. I rebuilt the weight boxes that set over the disc's with some lumber, two 2x4's and some bolts to hold them down to the frame. I purchased one 80 pound bag of concrete mix, then poured the concrete into two 2.5 gallon buckets. I put one bucket on each side to help push the disc's down for stiff dirt on new plots, or plots that haven't been harrowed in many yeas. I planted 10+ acres with this newly re built harrow and it worked great. Its a bit tricky to back up but it can be done. I got stuck a few times in soft muddy areas and had to unhook and winch the harrow out. But mostly, it was great as I was able to get to places with the ATV and my re built harrow, where I had to use hand tools in the past. Plus on those plots that were too big for hand tools, and I would haul a tractor with a tiller in, now I can use light weight equipment. What a big time and labor saver all around. I'm very glad I found that old harrow. The price was right too, free. The farmer that owns the property where I found it, is also one of the properties I manage for guiding deer and turkey hunts. He and his wife were so appreciative of the hard work and land improvements, that they would not take a cent. So, keep an eye out for those old pieces of small farming implements. It could be a cheap investment on a tool that is worth is weight in gold for maintaining and building food plots. Good luck!

It is the same problem here in Vermont. Hypothetically, if these bags of bait and salt blocks with bucks on the rapper were taken out of stores in states that baiting is illegal, where would the would be poachers that bait deer get their bait? A grain & feed store sells the same product for cattle, horses, pigs and such. Tractor Supply sells horse and pig feed too. If the culprit packaging bait products were eliminated from sport shops, would it lower baiting offenses? Probably not. If you have some scrap steel/metal to bring to the scrap yard that you found while cleaning up, when you sell the steel for money here in Vermont you have to show your drivers license and they photocopy it. They also keep a list of what it was for steel or copper and when you brought it in. This monitoring of metal sales and purchases was started because people were being robbed by metal thieves. The thieves would gut out summer homes for copper, or cut catalytic converters from new car parking lots, things of this nature. Then bring in the metal for cash. Who would be offended if they were asked for their drivers license when they purchased corn, grain salt blocks, ect....the poacher that baits deer, the elderly couple that feeds the pretty deer, or the farmer that needs corn for the pigs. Only one of these 3 is legal. Would this monitoring of the license for feed sales stop baiting wild game like deer? What other use of "deer cocaine" or a bag of "buck Bran" or any of these bait products readily available at Dick's Sporting goods, Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain ect...?

I don't know yet for sure. It is a fall planting seed and I am starting my fall planting this week. Biologic is telling me that Hot Spot is intended for hand tool plots. It requires only a half day of sunlight, but the more sun the better. It comes in a five pound bag to plant a 20 yard by 20 yard plot. Fertilizer is a good idea, moisture is important too. It is supposed to germinate in a week or so.
-
Hot spot by Biologic is a new one that I am trying his season. I have used the throw & grow which did good in the past. I did remove all of the debris from the plot area first. Then I dug down a couple inches to loosen the soil. The locations that I choose for these throw & grow plots are in the woods, in natural openings or small wood cutting lots. I always bring a chainsaw to give the food plot as much sun as possible. This spring I found an set of wheel harrows in a rusted up heap on one of the properties I manage. The owner just gave it to me, so I pulled it out of the brush and re built it, so now I can disc a plot instead of raking as long as I can get to the spot with a ATV.
