Well rifle starts in northern zone tomorrow. According to sunrise/sunset calendar, sunrise is at 0720 where I hunt. If one were to shoot a coyote at 0710, how would it be illegal? BTW, as we all no it would be light enough to shoot at 0710, so no "special" coyote hunting equipment would be required.

I myself think the DEC has it explained quite clearly. As you have put in bold, one may hunt big game sunrise to sunset. Before sunrise or after sunset it is completly legal for one to hunt coyotes. Coyotes ARE NOT big game, they are furbearers which can be hunted day or night with a centerfire rifle as long as centerfires are not prohibited for deer hunting. I'm not saying an Encon officer couldn't give you a ticket if you had a loaded gun before sunrise or after sunset but I would almost bet if you plead not guilty and went to trial, there wouldn't be a justice in NYS that would find you guilty, other than Bubba! It's a bit scary that a JP is having such a hard time understanding a simple regulation.

I couldn't have said it better myself wdswtr!! This site would probably be the last place I would seek advice for anything. I have learned a lot from the site but it has been through reading and certainaly not through asking questions!! I have never seen a group of people that fight amongst each other like hunters do. I'm sure the OP felt bad enough about his situation then a few members of the forum feel the need to make him feel worse. All I can say about the situation is no one can ever really say for sure weather they would shoot or not shoot in any given situation unless they were actually there! If there are hunters out there that have never wounded a deer I am more than willing to bet they have never shot at many because it is just an unfortunate part of hunting, it comes with the turf. Even if we do are very best not to wound animals, mistakes happen.

Shoot him, have him aged and we will all know for sure how old he is!!!

I agree with improving habitat but that is hard to do in much of the adirondacks due to NYS owning and over whelming amount of acearage. Also if deer don't need our interferance then why do we hunt to try to control the population?

Obviously you have never seen the winters in the Adirondacks because what you have stated above could not be farther from the truth. AND it's not legal Those legal and ethical issue's sure are conflicting. At any point in my reply did I say supplemental feeding was legal?? What I said was many deer die of starvation in the dacks during the winter and it isn't because the herd is beyond capacity. Right now there is 4+ feet of snow in the dacks, any spring won't be here for quite a while so IMO supplemnetal feeding in some places is more beneficial to the deer than not.

How come the buck in the third pic has a green tag if he was killed in southern zone during the 2010 season? 2010 tags were yellow.

What do you say to our hunting brothers in the Daks that don't have permits? Seems like most everyone forgets, is unaware or just doesn't care that there are NO DMP's in the Daks! It's pretty tough for us guys to pass on a small buck to shoot a doe if we don't have a DMP. ;D Just curious , but why not get a dmp for another area and take a trip to some state land to hunt? Just a thought Well NY, it is a thought but does not appeal to me for a few reasons. Time off from from work is one. I do get vacation but I would rather spend it hunting for an adirondack bruiser or any adirondack buck for that matter. I used to go to 8N hunting on public land but got sick of the orange barrade. Second is money. I will admit I could afford traveling for a hunt but really see no need to since if I take my time off to hunt the daks I know I can kill a buck......maybe only a spike but none the less i am happy and it didn't cost me a ton of money.

I don't know many details but according to what was sent to me, this buck was taken in Tupper Lake, NY.

If you aren't on board with food plots then your neighbors are going to pull deer from your property to their food plots. CWHITE, I certainly don't have to worry about any of my neighbors putting in food plots. My neighbors gladly let me put in the plots and THEY reap the benefits by sitting on my property lines!
