  1. EHD is spread by the midge but it says its not transmissible deer to deer.. a female midge only acquires the disease from biting an infected animal and then biting another animal infecting that one. so what infected animal started all of this, and why is it in so many different areas? One study said they could acquire the disease from livestock. could this be from transporting of livestock across state lines? There has to be a significant link somehow we haven't put together yet. A midge just isnt born with this disease.
  2. Saw the biggest buck I've ever seen on the hoof yesterday. Adirondack Giant!!! Couldn't tell ya how many points but easily 20+ inch inside spread and 12" plus tines. Tracked him in the snow for 3/4 of a mile and got within 40 yards of him before he caught me and stood up and ran up a steep ledge directly behind a pine tree never presenting a shot. 3 miles later caught up to him but was with a hot doe and was a few hundred yards ahead. Tried to gain on him until he mountain goated this mountain side like nothing of course silly me couldn't resist following him and letting mr big get away. End result I followed to far to a point of no return and snow let loose and slid off a 25 foot ledge about 4-5 miles back in the woods about 330pm...ripped my sleeve off my camo jacket landed in a snow avalanche that cushioned me. Had to figure out how to get myself out of the woods and got to my truck at 8pm only 2.5 hours or so after dark.....with no flashlight, no cell phone and no topo map. (Cleaned out back pack from being wet last hunt and forgot they didn't get back in bag.) Used matches to get bearings of compass sporadically. Luckily I know the topo of the area vividly and managed to get to a creek and followed it back down to my truck. My family was 15 minutes from calling forest rangers and reporting me. No serious injuries besides I pulled and strained nearly every muscle in my body, reinjured my torn meniscus and reinjured my torn labrum in my shoulder. What a day. So no hunting for me for awhile.....but I'm alive. Congrats everyone that punched a tag today!
  3. Oh trust me I whack my share of does and some smaller bucks in southern zone outside Albany. Just got into gun hunting past three seasons, bowhunted for past 17 years since I was 13 and lived in 4j. Moved to 5h last year and have never got an adk buck. Population is so low up here I just won't shoot does or small bucks...want that adk trophy mature buck. I'll get him soon enough. These adk deer all taste like spruce to me, yuck! Lol southern zone is my meat market. Usually 4-7 deer a year down there if I get dmps and my family signs there two dmps. Nothing like a bow harvest. First year I haven't been out with the bow yet. Late archery I'm positive I'll get an archery tag filled. Saturday it's go time...freezers low besides salmon and browns from lake Ontario, I'm a charter captain out of Oswego / Mexico.
  4. Yeah I imagine so. What do you look for here in the adks to make you follow them? I'm hunting silver lake wilderness area...used to have lots of big bucks back in the days of my grandfather and uncle's but these days they seem pretty scarce. Pm me if youd like. I'll take any tips you willing to give!
  5. Sweet, I wasn't the only crazy one out there today. Went 15 or so miles over and around 4 mountains a swamp, a big vly, and three creeks. Saw plenty of tracks just never found that holy s*** track to make it worth following. Did see a doe that almost ran me over while taking a 5 minute break for Gatorade and jerky, then came over a summit and almost stepped on a four or six point sleeping in a blow down at about 145. Great day though besides after an almost straight 8 mile trek into deep back country I come across a 6 wheeler and a trail cut all the way back in on state wilderness area. I was so pissed I ended calling the local region 5 forest ranger to let him know.... especially after seeing fur and blood in the back of the 6 wheeler... hopefully they aren't poaching...oh well good luck fellas!!
  6. My cousin and I doubled on eight pts this am. 4B.
  7. Your right no early bow in 3s, only regular season. Also one wmu in Suffolk county is open till end of January from Oct 1 as one entire regular season. Anyway two 8 pts down this am before 730 in 4b. Ruts been on for at least a week. Rubs scrapes active, lots of young bucks chasing. Saw a big one with a doe but was just following her not chasing about a week ago. Wouldn't let her more than 40 yrds away
