Hawthorn, Hackberry, Hazelnut
scobar replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have good luck with Hazelnut and bad luck with American chestnut. The American chestnut is very difficult to get established. I lost all 50 I planted to disease. Never tried the china ones but may give them a try. I still like apples as the favorite -
I couldn't open the link but like DEADDEER1 said hats off. I think you get more pride at being able to honesly say I passed up X this year. Our QDM club has guys every year that are passing 2.5 year olds and then not even harvesting a deer that year, me included. Keep up that practice and you will be rewarded with a Bullwinkle
-
I had a guy come in with one on the front of a skid steer, worked pretty good, but them darn rocks keep growing every winter. Would I do it again for food plots, probably not unless I'm using a rototiller, I would just pick up the grapefruit size.
-
I though bow hunters had more miss guided shots......we had 22 new calls on saturday. If only gun hunters (me included) followed the techniques bow hunters use we should have zero calls for help.

It is not legal to take any of it, unless you hit it or have in writting from a cop or DEC

nice recovery for Red, 9pt 2.5 year old

Mahindra,Kubota,Kioti...or Bobcat

30-35hp diesel will do everything you need it to. a must have. rear differential lock, front (4) wheel drive, 3pt hitch. nice but can do without, loader, cab, backhoe. FOOD PLOT: anything that has a 3pt, rear PTO and can turn a 60" roto tiller (25hp) and your in. The rototiller is all you need for food plots, yes there are all the other attachements but the roto is a do all. I would only but a new rototiller becasue they can get beat up pretty good being used. -
not sure, but I have just a mono pole, and it's terrible. I would advise a three stick in your situation to be the best for sure. In a blind you have the comfort to be able to move and adjust it without be detected

I created a ODM in my hunt area, then gave it a name, then bought metal posted signs from Voss signs with the hunting club name on it. It has stopped all tresspassing. I think the club name on a metal posted says "this is real we will prosecute"

I'm in westwrn NY and not familiar with other chapters East of here, There is a finger lakes chapter, western NY cahpter and one in the central part of the state. visit the web site....better yet start a new chapter, it's a ball helping other bow hunters and the information you learn from actullay seeing real hits, what the deer did is, what it didn't too has educated me in a few years, way more than my previous 30 years of bow hunting. Being a member I will guareentee it will make you a more educated and more satisfied bow hunter Any dog with a will to track can be used. The dog I use is a mix breed and she's great!

yukonhunter, thanks and that was a great 8point, glad we could help. I see some replays to my original note on backing out from a marginal hit. YES if you do that we will come 95% of the time. The biggest reason is the hunter or hunters have not tracked all over trying to recover the deer themselves. When you go looking you are spreeding the deer trail every which way which, the dog now has to try a figure out which trial in the right one. I think you can see what I'm talking about. Great dogs follow the blood to figure out the innerdigital sent of that particular deer. Once they have the gland sent, that is what they are actually following, because as you say there was no more blood. Youcon, did it all right with regards to a marginal hit, waited 2 hours backed out and called deer search. He took us to the hit site for the first time and 20 minutes later he had his deer. www.deersearch.org

WNY 716.648.4355 finger lakes 585.935.5220 CALL THEM DO NO GO BACK with out them or at least 24 hour wait. I have a search dog and am speeking from many gut shot deer. The worst thing you can do is polute the area by walking all over. You killed that deer and the dog will find it tomorrow. I guess I didn't read the entire post before giving him DS numbers....GREAT buck!

WNY area 716.648.4335 Finger Lakes area 585.935.5220 If the shot is in any way questionable don't go looking, don't even go to to the hit site, just wait then sneek out of there. If you call us with this type of information there is 95% chance we'll come out, and it allways produces an extremly higher rate of recovery. GOOD LUCK !

BULLWINKLE #2 ... great job!

When I was looking to buy land I drove around the area's I was intrested in. I took some address's, or simply roads, then went to the local town hall and found out who owned the property. Contacted the owner and you would be suprised at how many people said, yeah maybe......give it a try I think you'll be supriced with the outcome

time, shoot, don't shoot, it's all been answered a couple of times over. What I didn't see was a lot of advise on how to try and find him. I for one think he's still walking, but I would have also advised to call Deer Search. My sig pic is a Deer Search dog working in 6" of fresh powder, they have a great nose, and a great help to us bow hunters

lets say you two meet up, and he now he becomes part of your home decor!! But on the flip the excitment wins out and the hit is only marginal. Now the problem comes in, what do I do now??? Wait a minimum 1 hour, get out of your stand and sneak out of the area. Don't even go to the hit site, just leave and call Deer Search. With a trail now unpolluted from a hunter looking all over the place the success rate for the dog climbs 100% plus. This week we (Deer Search) have recovered two nice deer that the hunter followed what I just said. Yes it's hard to do, but it's the best thing to do for a recovery of a trophy, or any deer with a marginal shot

I agree that the herd is fine, even though my outings this year have been low on sightings. I do practice QDM in Erie county and it does work. It takes a lot of work to keep everyone on the same page, but it can be done. 3 one one side is still usually only a yearling, so just passing up all yearlings is the first step. We have our QMD goal of if it's not worthy of a mount leave it pass.
