  1. Out in 8F today. South wind is making things pretty tough. Saw a beauty this morning around 7:30, about 60 yds from the stand romping around with a doe. Of course in a thicket so no chance of a shot. They hung out for a while (20-30 minutes) heard some really weird yelps, and a couple snort wheezes. Then it all stopped. Haven't seen a thing since. I gotta say though, seeing a pig like that first thing gets you amped up for the rest of the hunt. Hoping something else comes by soon though. Have to pack it in by 12:30 and end my 4 day hunting weekend; looking like without much success. Oh well, got the MZ and shotgun all dialed in, and another week of vaca next week. Can't wait!!
  2. Wow! Movement seems real slow in 8h this morning. I'm guessing the rain and warm temp.
  3. Been blessed this am to come back to a honey hole in 8h. Sitting in the same stand I made my first bow kill back on 10/13. This place is like hunting a petting zoo! Back on 10/13, I lost count I how many deer I saw by 9:00. Good luck today folks.
  4. Been in the stand since 6 here in 8F. Nothing but tree rats and flipping mosquitoes! Maybe I should have picked up one of those thermacell units. Anybody use one?? Good luck everyone. Let's whack em and stack em!
  5. In the stand dark and early this am. Finally a little snow here in 8F!! Good luck today boys and girls.
  6. I'm right there with you. Took the day off, sitting here in the crazy wind, and have yet to see anything other than some really cool woodpeckers and squirrels. Let's hope for some speed beef to come cruising through.
  7. Just got into a brand new spot with lots of promise. Overlooking a deer highway that runs through the nastiest thickest briar filled swamp you've ever seen. Hoping for my luck to change. I haven't fired a shot since 11/7 with the bow. Just itching to put this new scope to some good use.
  8. Just listened to some fool unload his gun on the far side of the property I'm hunting at 7:15. Must be a trespasser. Then a few minutes later I heard some crashing between me and the hail of gun fire. I can't wait to see if it's some a-hole trying to track right towards me. What a great start!!
  9. Anyone Seeing anything in 8F?? Havent had the chance to get The first weekend of gun season. Planning on going out later today though.
  10. Gotta love it! Sitting here in the stand in Central OH (just north of Columbus) Overcast, gentle SSW, with a crossbow. (still bow season here). Just waiting for a big boy (or girl at this point) to pop out into the field I'm overlooking. Haven't tasted one of these Ohio Deere for quite a while.
  11. The only call I've ever had any luck with is my little Primos multiple call. I used the estrus bleat and got to watch it work like a charm. Sounds almost like a crying baby.
  12. Been in the stand since 6. Nothing yet but a couple tree rats running around. A few raindrops and a little windy. I'm guessing they're moving today though because I'm hearing a lot more shooting than yesterday. First shot heard at 6:45.
  13. I find it simply frickin' amazing that these critters always seem to be able to read the calendar and a watch!! Where the hell are the deer??
  14. Alright boys and girls, it's redemption time. Good luck everyone. Been in stand since 5:50 am. Nice morning here in 8f. Very light SW breeze, upper 30's, just watching the woods come alive. I love this stuff!!!!
  15. It's quite windy out here in 8f this morning. However I did see 4 does along side the road on my way to the stand this morning. First morning for that so maybe the activity is picking up. We'll see. Get to hunt till about 9 this morning then have to go get on a plane and head to OH for most of the week. I'd take my gear with me but not sure what the hotel would think about cutting up a deer in the room. Lol. Oh well, I'll get to hunt there again on Thanksgiving weekend. I'd definitely love a chance at one of their slammers!
  16. Got in the stand about 3:30. Seems like it should be just right other than a little more breeze than I'd like. Am I the only one getting sick of getting up at the ass crack of dawn, spending countless hrs in the woods to only SEE frickin deer?? All I know is I just bought a new slug barrel and scope for my shotgun and she's practically driving tacks at 100 yds. I'm ready for redemption in 6 days!! I have fallen in love with now hunting, as it's my first year, but I don't remember this much frustration since puberty!! It high time for something to DIE.
  17. Been hunting 8f pretty hard. Seeing some deer, but no strange behavior yet.
  18. Got out early this am and had trouble finding the stand. (I'm such an idiot!) Knew I was close to it, just had to wait for more light. Anyway, made it up the tree by a little after 6. At 8:15 a small buck strolled by at 40 yds. Didn't seem spooked or nervous, and didn't seem to be chasing. I hope he or his daddy comes back by, cause it will be lights out. As best I can figure this will be my 12th time out, and I've seen about as many deer. Haven't fired a shot yet. Maybe I'm being too picky I just don't want to take a questionable shot. Either way, I can taste it so bad I told the wife I wasn't coming out of the woods today until I was dragging a dead deer with me. Wish me luck guys!
  19. Got on stand at 3:30 this afternoon. Didn't even get settled in until a good size yote strolled by at about 40 yds out. He stopped, looked at me, then continued on. Right now I'm considering making a squirrel shishkabob. Those things are so noisy, I always think the big one's coming, only to see one of those ground rats. Oh well, they must be out just enjoying the beautiful afternoon as well. Good luck this weekend boys and girls.
  20. I used to work with a guy named Dick Dreyer. We used to say "something they should put in every men's room". I can't imagine the hell this guy must have endured as a kid growing up.
  21. Same story here fellas. I'm sitting out in the mud right now in Walworth and have seen zero movement. Saw 6 on Saturday but nothing since. I think you boys already shot em all!
  22. I'm not a fan of heights so I feel much more comfotable hunting on the ground. Not to mention the fact that being 6'4"/265 makes for a pretty cramped day in a standard size tree stand. Granted, it does seem like you need to be more stealthy on the ground to even see deer, but I suppose that's why they call it "hunting". My biggest fear from a stand (besides the sudden stop after a fall of course) is that a beatuty will pass right behind me and I won't be able turn enough to get a shot off. I feel like I can be much more manueverable on the ground. While I have spotted a lot more deer from stands in the past, I've only been able to close the deal from the ground. For example, yesterday, I saw 6 deer from a stand (all at different times) and didn't get to fire a single shot because of their positions and the restrictiveness of the harness, but this afternoon, I was on the ground and I knew had I seen one worth taking it would have been game over. Unfortunately, I hung the same amount of deer both today and yesterday; "0". I hope my luck changes, because I'm guessing "tag" steaks don't taste very good.
  23. Hi Everyone, I'm brand new to the forum but I've had a ball reading all the spirited and informative chat on here the last few days. Some of you guys are a real trip! ;D Anyway, Saturday will be my first time hunting here in NY and I can't wait! In fact, I haven't hunted since I was young pup back home in OH. Killed a couple deer there over the years but nothing real serious. After a 15 year layoff, I'm finally getting my priorities straight and getting back into it this year. I've very much enjoyed soaking up all the advice and tips everyone has to offer. It's been a great help. At least I hope. What's kind of funny is how my wife always thought golf was an expensive habit I had. Wait till she sees what I've spent this year on new gear and what a new gun's going to cost next year. I don't remember all this cool stuff from when I used to hunt!! Best of luck to everyone this year and stay safe. Thanks
