One of the first times I have seen a buck look even bigger from the front than back!

Here's a better pic from the back...

You really can't appreciate the mass on this deer or the size of it's head until you see it one a wall with other mounts. I had to replace the head on this form with the biggest replacement head I could find. You would swear this deer came from the northern bush county of western Canada!

Wow!!!!! Great job and great buck!

The same member took both of those? Were they ever posted here before?

No, the first one was taken by his son. They were never posted here and the only hint that I can give is that I didnt kill it...lol

  3. Another buck from the same member. The pictures do not do this 171" giant any justice. It's probably the biggest form I've ever used. The deer has a great story to go with it with multiple years of history and close encounters. Truely and NYS buck of a lifetime!

  4. Since I've gotten in a number of bucks to mount from members of this forum, I thought it would be cool to post some of them. Several are real STUDS. I won't reveal the names of the members on here unless they themselves want to chime in.

We'll start off with this beautiful youth season buck killed by a member's son. Love those early season capes!

I'll update the thread as I get them finished up and ready to go home. Ive got 4 more member's bucks on the drying wall right now and a couple more on deck to get mounted up this weekend.

No, the ring end tape is for measuring the circumference (mass).  " P&Y Official Measuring Tape-Ring End. A specialty tape with an inset "zero mark" making it especially handy for taking circumference measurements."

The "lip end" description from P&Y...."P&Y Official Measuring Tape - Lip End:  A specialty 1/4 inch steel tape used for taking length measurements six feet in length.

The folding ruler is for measuring inside spread only.......most (all?) have a sliding measure at the start of the ruler to get accurate inside measurements.

A cable with a solid end, an alligator clip, pencil and blue tape do round out the kit of the serious shade tree measurer.  Oh and couple beers too.

You are exactly correct. I misread the name of the tape...the ring end is for measuring the mass NOT the lip end.

I'm a certified scorer for the NYS BBC. Here's what is in our scoring "kit"...

You are also correct that the lufkin ruler needs the sliding brass insert. Although you only use the inside spread in the actual score, the tip to tip and greatest spread are also recorded on the score sheet. Actually, I'm in need of a new one because a buddy of mine who is the local P&Y scorer broke my a couple of weekends ago when he was over scoring a couple of deer that I'm mounting. My ring end is getting pretty beat too. I ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE A BEER HANDY WHEN SCORING A DEER FROM HOME TOO!

I got that lip end tape as a constellation prize. It works really well. Bends along with most tines well lip goes on the tip of the tine. Out of your list you posted after blue painters tape and a pencil works well to if you want to get serious about measuring points off the beams or tines. single tape is close enough to be practical though unless you're into being Mr official.

The lip ends are used to take the 8 mass measurements. You also use a folding carpenter's lufkin ruler to take the spread measurements.

That's the first thing I noticed on that 3rd buck too. How raised the buck's hide is on those bases. Maybe a skull deformation? Usually they are flat across between bases.

@WNY Bowhunter You do quite a few mounts, so I'm sure it's tough to remember. But do you recall seeing any other bucks with such pronounced bases off the head like

I think what you're seeing is the long hair around the burrs. In early season they haven't been rubbing much and worn these hairs down yet.

Are those all fair chase? I’ve never seen bases like that

Yep, all fair chase Region 8 bucks. I've got a couple in that are 30" bigger than these guys. One in particular (anonymous forum member's buck) has the most awesome bases/ browtines that I've ever seen!!!

Not sure about a whitetail done like that, but a muley, elk, or caribou would be cool.

How is the material cost, and time required compared to a standard shoulder mount ?

The material cost is more due to purchasing the packframe and having to get the entire hide dry tanned.  The time invested was less on this mount than a standard one.

Can’t speak for this hunter, but I asked Jason to do one of these mounts for my gun buck this year.   I just wanted something different.   I packed him out on an ATV but that wouldn’t really fit on the wall.

You've never seen one of those "truck bed" mounts? LOL!!!

What made the hunter go this route? Just something different or did he pack it out and wanna remember the hunt that way?

This concept isn't really unique...the backpack style mount has gotten popular over the past couple of years. It's not really my favorite type personally, but it's not my choice either.

    Nice work,

How much and can you do that from older ones that have been euro mounted? Can you arrange for the hide/cape?

You can use a replacement hide but at this point of the season you'll have a tough time finding a replacement cape with the entire hide attached.

  13. Now that season is finally over, it's TAXIDERMY time once again. My first attempt at a backpack...all finished up minus a few personal touches from the hunter.

****For all you internet ECOs, the tag is green because the deer was taken in 2018.

i know the daylight helps but it's hard to tell just how good a mount is until you get it next to others. not just a raggedy old mount at that point. you've brought the thing practically back to life.

Thanks (just saw this post). It's almost time to start the process all over again. It's been a crazy season...I took well over my quota during archery and the first week of gun season. Hadn't gotten many calls in the past three weeks but they are starting to trickle back in again. Have a late season muzzleloader monster coming in tonight!
