Actually I can knock an arrow in my compound within seconds. I've missed and then killed a deer with a second shot. There is very little chance of a second shot with the noise of a crossbow (both shooting and re-cocking). Advantage bow. Plenty of violations with regular bow. Mostly they involve shooting before or after legal shooting hours or baiting. Since you can't hear the shot, does anybody know what time the arrow was really released? BTW, when is a bow "loaded"? I know of numerous people who shoot at first light and dark, neither of which is sunrise or sunset. Fewer people in the woods, no noise, how are the CO's going to catch them? The person would have to admit to the violation to make it stick. I use a compound no problem, but have no issue with crossbows. Like I said before, it is no different then being allowed to use rifles in what used to be shotgun only areas.

No more impact than allowing the use of rifles in what use to be shotgun areas. Now there are tons of "hunters" sitting field edges and taking shots at 200-300 yds. Including the DH that shoots across a field toward the hillside I hunt on!

Yes, the new "take my kid hunting so I can kill a deer and let them tag it" season. Teach a kid to shoot some squirrels in the head, jump shoot rabbits, wing shoot grouse and woodcock, or become proficient at turkey or waterfowl hunting. Learn about all game, their habits, and the weapons used on them. Not just the "sexy" game like deer. I guess it's not the same being proud of bagging a limit of small game for your family, as it is killing a deer. I'm sure there are some kids and parents that enjoy all hunting, but don't think it's the majority. Those that do will be the lifelong hunters and conservationist. I rarely see pictures of parents and kids after a successful rabbit or squirrel hunt on this forum or in the newpaper. Also, I've heard a fair amount of "locker room" talk about "sticking it to the bow guys" with an "early start" on gun season. Sad to say, many adults only pick up a weapon once a year, and that's deer gun season. I don't see this youth season as a bridge to lifelong hunting (other than deer) for most kids. JMO.

Def has to make an effort to locate the deer. Probably not much of an eater at this point. He can get another tag if the meat is bad. Not faulting his shot placement, happens to most people at one time. Lets flip the tables, hypothetically, he launchs the arrow 15 minutes after sunset, make a good shot, an recovers the deer. Next time will he climb down when he is suppose to or wait that extra 15, 20, 30 min to get a deer? My guess he will stay, after all he got away with it one time. Why not the next season, next season, etc. What if it was the 150 inch monster you've been hunting for 2 yrs and your neighbor waits that extra 20 mins past legal shooting to kill him. You gonna congratulate them when you've been following the law to get him? Sorry about the rant. JMO

I'm more surprised at the ignorance of the people who talk about it being "dark" or not. What does the "amount" of light have to do with deer hunting? The law clearly states Sunrise to Sunset. Both of which are a set time for your location every day. The "amount" of light has nothing to do with legal shooting hours. The guy did take a bow/hunter safety course in order to get a license, these types of questions are covered in the course. Including how to handle a gut shot deer. How can he plead ignorance?

Good observations about the crossbow. The other big issue using a crossbow is noise. There are going to be a ton of people who will try to shoot deer at 30+ yards. Yes the xbow is accurate at 30+, but very noisy. I have 25 years of experience using one, some people will make a few good shots on an unsuspecting deer, but several deer will "jump string" resulting in a bad hit. You won't hear much about the 40 yd shots that didn't result in a picture. I've killed 2 does with my xbow this year, neither over 15 yds.
