Do you ever hunt just to be with friends and family. Even though you think you have a better shot going alone.
So almost every year I get a invitation to go hunting with my relatives who I don't get to see much .
They like to go way far up there 200 miles away from me .
But I think I have better chance getting one near me because I know the area better know where to look and spent lots of time in those places close by .
But I'm probably just going to go with them anyway just to hang out with them been a few years now since I went with them .

Let's see I like guns I like nature I like hiking I like the challenge of it the excitement of it .
And because I don't play golf
hunting let's me legally hike with a gun in the woods on public land hunting and shooting its a beautiful thing , Just fun to me even when you get nothing it's a good time .

Think about how many times you see deer feeding along the side of roads so I would say if there is no pressure it's not a bad idea to stay close if it's not a pressured area that is.

Going deeper then anyone else is a myth.
That depends on food sources and what borders the public land you are talking about .
If its state land with farm land around it you may be better off hunting the borders . But if it's full of hunters everywhere the deer will be pushed deeper in more then likely.. or across the road to private property so it could go either way .
I seen deer 150 yards from my truck and I have seen deer 2, 3 ,4, miles in .
Every property is a little different you have to Scout look think look for deer trails funnel. Just what others have written already

What part of the state are you hunting ?
Only advice I will give you is go far away from any populated areas as you can . Less people = less hunters on public land means more chances you will run into a buck before the next guy shoots it .

Public land no .
Private land yes .
I don't see why not if you still have tags and it's on private land .

I think between guys letting younger bucks go, the decline of hunters, food plots being planted and the mild winters we have been having, that we are seeing bigger deer harvested.
Don't forget the use of trail cams when guys know there is a big one around they are even more then likely to let a smaller buck go hoping the big one will show up from the trail cams.

Everyone here locally is talking about what a slow opening weekend it was, with very little shooting
However SOMEONE is killing them... I stopped at Madigan's Custom Cutting just west of Addison on RT 119...One of my Canadian buddies wanted to donate his deer...
They have around fifty deer there, mostly bucks, and I saw more BIG racks there than I have ever seen....There must have been 10 or 12 real wallhangers, and the average rack size was much bigger than normal....Lots of real nice 8 and 10 points.....One 10 had to go close to 150 inches, and he was huge for down here along the Pennsyltucky border...I'm guessing he would go 180 dressed... Maybe even more...That is not too unusual around the Finger lakes and the lake plains, but down here in Dogpatch it is real big.. I have been hunting for over 50 years and the heaviest local buck I ever saw weighed on a SCALE ( as opposed to weighing them with a thumb and an eyeball) weighed 185 dressed...

That yours or just a coincidence you mentioned it ?
looks like a good area 5 hour drive would kill me though .

He was just selling some Aflac insurance.
You can't see it in that picture but there is bar right there across the street. I wonder if he got hold of some alcohol some how from the bar and was intoxicated

Anyone notice stateland was empty yesterday or was it me? We hunted a 700acre piece no trucks when we went in or out. Brother left at 8 and there was 1 truck. Other buddy took lunch at noon anf wad only one truck he said when he got back at 2. The guy i saw was on private. Not complaining just seemed like the woods get emptier every year.
Yes saw less cars this year but still I would not say the woods I was at was empty 12 vehicles I counted last year same area had about 17 . 0 at the exact spot I was at.
But down the road they were parked on either side of me .

Forgot to put my heel lift in my new boots yesterday didn't think much of it until this morning now my achilles tendon is bothering me again .

Well I'm up and my achilles tendon is bothering me again
I'm supposed to use a heel lift and forgot to put it into my new boots yesterday when I went out with dad .
Not sure if its smart to go out until it stops bothering me sometimes after a few hours it gets better if I walk on it hard could take weeks to stop bothering me .
the spot I want to hunt is 1.5 mile walk down a steep hill . Weather looks like it's going to be good all week except tomorrow. So I got time to go a few more times at least .
Good luck to you guys .

Thankfully, I never have that type of trouble with it and I really missed the cider today. I can stay in the stand all day if I bring a quart of hot cider to drink. I shot the doe at 8:20 then dragged the gutted carcass to a spot 30 yards from my stand (legal baiting ?) hoping that might draw in the big buck that I saw over there last Saturday. No such luck. I started getting thirsty at 11:00, so I called my dad to bring his side-by-side ATV to fetch her. I rode up to the house to eat munch with them (and drink about 1/2 gallon of cold cider from their fridge). I went back out and sat in another stand till 4:40 pm but no more sightings.
In 38 deer seasons, with lots of all day sits and many gallons of cider drank, there has never been a single time when I had to crap in the woods.
I guess you don't eat much during the day .

That deer never knew I was behind him until I killed him. He was hours ahead of me all day that’s why I was walking at such a fast pace I knew I had a lot of catching up to do.
Most people don’t realize that this time of year it’s nothing for a big woods buck to make a 10-20 mile walk in a day. That’s the main reason why I usually won’t take anything but a smoking fresh track this time of year is because you often don’t catch up to them.
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkGotcha impressive still all the same most guys probably wouldn't of chased him for that long before heading back .
I know I wouldn't walk more then 4 hours away tops before i head back to the road .
And usually I noticed most guys at least the public land I hunt mostly now after 1 hour walk in you see few guys that pass that mark that far in.
How do you use optics when deer hunting?

I use a light weight monocular .
There are always times when you want to see farther in the distance. Especially on public land they are helpful to pick out the guys who don't use orange and avoid hunting to close to them .
