    Grey Fox

Heckshire !!! I'm glad to hear that. I've only seen reds in the park, but then again I never saw a gray on L.I. I always figured that if greys were still on L.I. that they should be in the coop at Ridge. I never asked out there though. I know they used to have a few fox because a number of years ago sometimes my coonhound would run one (unfortunately). I guess I never thought of it then and just assumed that she was running a red. I'll never know. I'm glad to hear eyewitness reports. And the white fox, who can figure that one. Thanx to all
  2. I have around 20 mouth crow calls including the Hadel's Triple Tone crow call. I always liked it. It changes tone when you bite down. I've called in quite a few crows with it. As in most, if not all crow calls ,you should blow hard into it and give it some emotion too. In addition to just blowing into them , I add a bit of sort of gargling into my calls at times, which gives the call a good sound. I believe that the sort of throaty call makes "SOME" sounds more realistic. That's my opinion anyway. good luck
  3. I was out today, not hunting, just trying to call fox with a new predator call when a crow flew over. I took out a crow call and made the sound of a distressed crow. He turned calling back to me and circled and I did combo with a predator call and a crow call. With that a few more came in screaming. They wouldn't leave until I stood up. I love crows.

    Grey Fox

I've read reports of a couple of sightings of grey fox on Long Island, but I've never seen one here. I read that years back Long Island had them. I've seen lots of reds, but no greys. Has anyone ever seen a Grey on Long Island.
  5. I bought my first crow call in '65 or '66. I probably have 20 of them now. For many years it was my favorite hunting. I still carry crow calls that I made in my car and call crows just to get 'em going. I use 2 , or 3 decoys, but think more would be better. I just didn't want to carry more. I also used an owl decoy at times. I just saw a red tailed hawk decoy for sale on the internet, looks pretty good, but haven't bought it yet. I 've been reading crow busters for a number of years and even bought an instruction tape made by Bob Ahronson (not sure if spelling I'm his name right). The tape was great .I also really like the site. I also carry predator calls , which at time work really well. Many times when I'm calling fox , the crows come in really cranked. I've had some BIG flocks of crows come in to predator calls.Doesn't always work, but it works often enough for me to carry one.
  6. In Connetquott, I'm fairly certain that the turkeys are all gone. I looked around quite a bit in the snow and saw no birds and no tracks. Also, when I asked a park employee last month I was told that they were gone. I used to go there and see them quite often and remember when they were down to very few.I was told that it was believed that the fox ate them. In the 80's on my way home from work I used to see guys with bows hunting a parcel of land just west of the park( not in the park) and one year I was told of a big 10 pointer that came from that spot. I think they built on that spot now.( it was next to where a credit union is now). I never took advantage of the spot and regretted it later. I've duck hunted in Southhaven park and never heard of deer hunting in there . The duck hunting as I recall was by sort of a lottery system. We went in the morning and signed in then I think they picked names for spots. They had an afternoon duck hunt too. It was not opened to hunting every day.
  7. I was a member of the Long Island Coonhound Assoc. some years ago, but I don't know if they are still around. I did most of my coon hunting at night, but on rare occaisions I would see them up on big limbs in trees in daytime while squirrel hunting....but like I said it was rare. In fact the first coon I ever saw in the daytime I shot, and a week later my friend did the same. That's what got me to get a coonhound. Those coons were not on Long Island. I coon hunted the coop alot as well as some private spots. I'm not sure how the rules are now, but we used to get a night hunting permit. In recent times I have hand called a number of fox on Long Island in the day and although I hate to admit it years back one of my black and tans would run one if she thought I wouldn't be wise to her. In my OPINION you'd have a better chance of success calling fox in the day rather then coon hunting in the daytime. Other then the coops and a few of the wetland spots that allow small game hunting finding spots can be tough. If your interested in hunting the weland spots you need a permit, it's free. Call the DEC in Stoneybrook and get the application ( It may be on line too). If you do want the wetlands permit ask for the maps and regs. Some are restricted to duck hunting. And if you want to night hunt there, I'm not sure if it's allowed. You'd have to ask the DEC. I used 12 guage #4 high brass for raccoons on Long Island. Good luck
  8. I used to hunt for pheasants every year at Craberry Mt. and it REALLY can get crowded especially since there is such limited parking. (They have specific parking spaces for hunters, and I doubt that there were over 10 spots, unless it changed recently). I have seen red fox there twice on the way up the road to get to the parking spots. Due to the amount of pheasants there I did try hand predator calls once , but didn't see anything. I did think there was a possibility that one had come close based on the excited sounds of birds a bit out in front of me. BUT since I didn't see anything I can't confirm it. I hadn't thought of coyotes at the time , I was hoping for a red fox. I know someone that turkey hunted in the spring a few years ago and ran into horseback riders, so I guess it is a multiple use area.
  9. I tried this yesterday and it didn't post so I'll try again. I hunted Sterling Forest a few years ago, for fall as well as spring turkey and pheasants in season. The last time I was there ,on my way to the area I hunted, a big 'yote crossed right in front of the car. What a beauty. I was there for fall turkey and wound up chasing pheasants too so I didn't try my predator calls. With all the squirrels, deer, turkey and the pheasants that make it I would think it would be predator heaven. I used to see some grey fox a bit east of Sterling in an area with similar terrain so I would "GUESS" that they have grey fox too. Not in Sterling , but I have called in red fox with a pheasant hand call making distrees sounds. So I would try a pheasant distress in addition to other calls if they still stock the pheasants. The spot I liked would have been a good place for the pheasant calls, but I would have had to climb a bit to seperate from all the other hunters.
  10. I understand that ,I still get excited when I call anything . Too bad squirrels aren't more responsive. Well calling them , or not, I'm glad to hear that you are getting some. They are fun to hunt..I hope you get a bunch more before the season ends and have some memorable hunts. If you ever have luck calling squirrels again I'd like to read about your success
  11. REALLY nice fish congrats... what did you get it on
  12. My favorite duck call was Haydell's dr 85. I haven't hunted ducks in the past 2 years, but did quite a bit for around 5 years.I hunted alone quite a bit, but when I did hunt with others most liked that call also.
  13. Years back I used to squirrel hunt quite often. I did best in early morning in areas where I saw a lot of squirrel nests and food sources.I would walk quietly to a previously scouted spot and take a stand with my back against a large tree and listen for barks and scampering, and watch the trees My thoughts on them were that in early fall I'd see a lot of young active ones, and in January I figured it was mating time so I'd see some doubles. One winter I got 2 with one shot with #5's . I took a quick shot as I led one up a tree thru branches with my shotgun.( I never saw the second one until it fell) I have tried calling them, but only was successful once, so from my limited experience with calling I couldn't judge how good it works. I like eating them and I would home tan the hides; use the tails for streamer flys; or mount them. My coonhounds would barked treed at them sometimes in the day, but I never really hunted them with dogs. I had logged almost all of my hunts since around 1965 so although I haven't hunted in a couple of years now, I look at my old records and have some good squirrel hunting memories.
