Silver, great link! Robinson, brushpiles should be twice as big and twice as tight as you think you need. I use trimmings from around my property and stack them as tight as I can get. I've never used the log base, but I guess it couldn't hurt as long as there was thick cut offs in there also. Another thing you could do is hinge cut some of your trees about three feet off the ground. Hinge cutting is cutting about 2/3 of the way through the tree and then pushing it over so that it lays parallel to the ground. Do this to about a dozen 6" diameter trees all in a row. Lay the trees in the same direction and what happens is the additional sun allows grasses and briars to grow up through it to provide great cover from aireal predators like hawks and owls. Another plus of hinge cutting is that the cover can last a long time. Another thing that could be done is supplemental feeding. I belonged to a club that would put overturned 30 gal. plastic barrels on a pallet, surround this with four other pallets to keep deer out, and then stack brush around it to look inviting to the rabbits. Four small holes about 3" x 3" allowed for gravity feeding with corn, soybean, pellets, etc. Good luck, Arrowsmith

I also agree an the .243, but instead of buying the 700 in the youth model I would get it in the full size version and then buy a "cheap" replacement plastic stock and cut it to fit. As your son grows you can add to the butstock via a slip over recoil pad. That way your son can grow into his new 700 rifle and use it for varmints and predators when he graduates to a larger caliber, or if he wants, he can just keep killing deer with the .243. Either way, I wish you and your son luck on openting day in PA!

Forgot to mention all native snakes (inlcuded common garter variety) also fall into the do hot harvest or catch category. No more snake hunting for kids? What the heck is this world coming to?

Was paging through the new DEC regulations and saw where you may not posess or harvest salamanders and I thought back to all those summer days camping with my family in Allegany State Park and going on "nature hunts"! To say the least, SOMEONE in our group always managed salamanders in a cup, and we were only one of many on the creek each time we went. When did salamanders become endagered? As for the chipmunks, I remember when they were specifically listed in the "unprotected" species area of the regs. Now I can find no mention of chipmunks. Same story here, as a boy growing up in a squirrel hunting family our 22's were sometimes used to eradicate the pests around the cabin because they got in and caused all types of damage! There were always more than we could handle. Are they now protected? I mention the chipmunks because while on a recent black bear hunt in Ontario I was again reading regs and found a listing of fully protected species, and you guessed it the "eastern chipmunk" has full protection in Ontario. What are your thoughts on Salamanders and chipmunks? By the way, I got a small 150lb bear with my bow. It is my 6th to date. Arrowsmith

Hunted out of my uncles camp near E'ville May 1st and 2nd. Birds were strangely silent and fields that held gobblers strutting in snow 2 and 3 weekends ago were like ghost towns. My uncle managed to scratch down a nice jake, but where did all those big boys go? Forgot to take pic before jake was made freezer ready! Darn.

Kubota L1500 Diesel Tractor. Excellent 2 WD food plot tractor with 3 point hitch and 4 speed pto. I do not know the year or hours on machine, but it starts and runs perfect. The front tire was low at the time I took the picture, but it is a new tire that I put on last fall, and is now fine after I filled it up. I wuold like 3,000.00 for the tractor. I don't know about a rifle, but here is the ballistics chart for a pistol in 45 long colt. As you can see, at no point does the load carry the generally accepted 1000 lbs of energy generally required to hunt deer or other big game. As for Accuracy and range. My guess is that would depend on the shooter, gun, load, etc.. The food, the poker, the laughs, and the bucks. Great times with good people. We did start a new tradition this year. We started the "Best shot in camp trophy shoot". We hang a commercial paper deer target at 100 yards. At some point during the week you shoot one time at that target and go down and circle your shot with your name. Closest to the heart gets a personal trophy to take home and your name on a plaque in the camp that gets updated yearly. Everyone seems to like the idea and the personal trophy was 5 bucks with a running buck deer on top. The small piece that goes on the plaque at camp is a dollar. Six bucks a year for a great camp tradition! Arrowsmith

Find yourself a nice oak or hickory laden woodlot and get in the woods early in day, or later in afternoon on nice WINDLESS days (squirrels seem to hate wind) and sit with your back to your favorite tree. I usually take along a small cushion or folding stool for comfort and then just wait for about 1/2 hour. If no squirrels, move and repeat sit a couple hundred yards away. This is some of my favorite hunting. Good luck! PS Mepps fishing lure company may still buy squirrel tails. Another buyer may be local fly shops. Check with them.

Hello everybody! New to this site yesterday. My name is Dave and I am a hunter. (LOL kinda like the AA opening line.)I live in WNY with my wife and two kids. I like to hunt most anything, but expecially like bowhunting and running our beagle on rabbits. In the summer my son and I spend a lot of time fishing, shooting woodchucks, target shooting with guns or bows, and taking care of our camp and food plots. This looks like a pretty cool site with lots of good information available.

Hello All. New to this site today. This looks like a great place for info and tips for happenings around the State. I am amazed to see so many coyote posts. I did not know that so many chased them. No wonder they are so smart! Question. My son and I are going to head to adirondaks this weekend from WNY (Buffalo area) with our beagle to try to get a hare or two. We only have one day to hunt (Sunday) and I haven't been up that way in 15 years or more. Anyone care to share a starting point for us so that we do not spend to much time wandering around Sunday morning? I previously hunted Pixley Falls area, Booneville, Lowville, and Barnes Corners, but cover changes a lot in 15 years and I don't imagine my old haunts are what you would call good hare cover any longer.
