  1. Good reports, fellas. Though this is the Bear forum so I was wondering about bear action.
  2. Anyone have any reports of kills or action? I know it seems like most harvests happen in gun season but checking in. Nothing from me, just nice fresh scat while messing up deer opportunities.
  3. https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/bbrpt2022.pdf
  4. Thanks. I guessed it was something like that but just haven't seen it explicitly described.
  5. When do you harvest the fat? Do you scrape it off when skinning? I have seen some videos on skinning or gutting bears but it never shows fat harvest. Should I get one, I'd like to keep that fat.
  6. In NY scent lures are legal as is calling. You could try either or both. I know one fellow on another forum who has drawn bears in with scent lures near NJ border but yes it's low %. Only bear I have seen was by chance and I bolted as soon as I snapped a twig and it saw me. The Ultimate Guide to Black Bear Hunting by Douglas Boze has a chapter on calling which he likes a lot. He hunts in WA state.
  7. Generally, how does it all go for bears as the cold comes? For example, the deer rut is fading/over and food again resumes its primary importance. But with bear, it's simply food all fall, right? Find the food, find the bears.... Thanks for any insight.
  8. That would be much appreciated. I didn't make it out due to family and other issues. Was hoping to do it before gun season but am hitting my friend's land a little farther northwest this weekend.
  9. Been e-scouting Sterling again, might aim to head up there now, deer or bear, whatever happens. Or a just a nice long hike
  10. I want to hit that corner of NY that borders the NJ border there. Might be some NJ bears cross the border!
  11. Yes, the limited ban has been expanded. It's anti science backed by a group that calls themselves the party of science
  12. Huckleberry Ridge State forest - anyone ever hunt there (bear or anything)?
  13. Here it is. https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/bbrpt2020.pdf Anyone read it? Using it to scout? I might be losing my buddy with land in 3h to the west coast so the public hardway might be my only ticket.
  14. Yep, going for early bear isn't a high odds hunt, I know, even with those cam pics. Scent lures, calling would be fun to try out. It's about trying for a bear and not worrying about blowing a much higher percentage deer opportunity.
  15. any september strategies / tactics besides look for their food sources?
  16. Early Bear is less than a month away in NY. Anyone planning to do it? I've got a buddy who's sent me trail cam pics of some bears. It's all about food, right? I think the berry sources are gone or will be by then.
  17. Thanks. And yes, did not plan on taking any bear in their den, just wondering if this might be a spot they frequent.
  18. I am stuck out on Long Island these days of lockdown and we've had some severe windstorms. I am wondering about the fallen trees on the bear hunting land I have been to - I would imagine that bears would use the underside as dens in the winter. Would they also sleep in them during the seasons? Might these be spots to look for bears going to or coming from?
  19. Seems like NJ banning hunting bears on public land is a bonus for parts of NY.
  20. It has been released for 2019. Here it is: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/bbrpt2019.pdf Here's the harvests page for deer and bear by year: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42232.html Southern zone doing most of the harvests, and a jump as well. Hope to contribute to that next year myself.
  21. Hi guys, I know it's almost over this year, but if I get lucky this weekend anyone know anything really close to NYC? Thanks
