burmjohn
After doing some reading.. It seems most recommend Rectangular food plots? The more cover, the more the deer would use the food plot because they will feel safe. It makes sense. What are your thoughts?
NYBowhunter
small plots (1/2 acre or smaller) with cover that surrounds the plot on atleast three sides is ideal. Small plots in the middle of your property would best, especially if there is thick cover or ridge not to far away. My 1/2 acre clover/turnip plot is surrounded on three sides with 2 sides covered with large conifers and 1 side has tall grass, young pine trees and apple trees, deer like to feed close to the tall conifers for safety and they will skirt the pine trees for security.. several smaller plots are more ideal then just 1 large plot. sampotter
Hourglass shaped plots work well because a big buck at one end can't see all of the other end, but knows there could be a doe down there. Place your stand on the downwind side of the narrow spot in the middle and intercept aforementioned big buck. Also- if you have a lack of thick cover in your area, plant field corn as your cover 20-30' wide. By the time hunting season rolls around it will be 8-10' tall and will also provide feed for the deer in the winter. A pull behind planter works best, but I've had a lot of luck broadcasting the corn seed on well-prepared ground and cultipacking it in. It does need a good whack of nitrogen to optimize growth.
