5 round mag for hunting with the AR

i don't have a 5 round mag for hunting (yet). can i legally hunt with the rifle without a magazine and just single shot it?

Yes, as long as you can use the rifle in your district. Check.

What are you hunting ? The 6 round capacity only applies to deer and bear. If you are hunting predators, such as fox and coyote, or small game , there is no limit to the magazine capacity.

I hunt whitetail with a 6.8 AR. Instead of purchasing 5 round mags, I took three of my 10 rounders, cut dowels approximately 1" long, wrapped them in electrical tape, removed the bottom plate of the magazines and inserted the dowels so that no more than 5 rounds could be inserted in the magazines while I am hunting. If I take this gun out for varmint, I can easily remove the dowel so that I can insert 10 rounds again.

I think only 3S does not allow rifles for hunting small game.
