erussell
pretty cool what go's into building a good flintlock rifle. Might take a while for me to save up for one but im going to get one. Their a work of art I can get into.
nyslowhand
Very neat video!!! Love looking at those replica rifles, pistols, powder horns, knives, etc.
erussell
Ive think ive setteled on getting one from this place. They are rather affordable and not all gussied up. Don't want something I don't want to take into the woods. Now I just have to settle on a particular school of rifle. http://www.earlyrusticarms.com/pricesanddescriptions.htm
nyslowhand
Their prices aren't unreasonable! Looking at the DIY kit? My 1st ML was a Hawken kit. Rifle barrels are a problem to blue at home, but can be done. I'm sure you've considered a used one from the gun auctions. Blackpowder guns can be shipped to/within NY without the added FFL expense. Drop a PM to bpb and tell him what you are thinking. He can help!!

nyslowhand
Not me, my involvement ends with cap & ball. Don't see myself getting into flintlocks.
erussell
I figure to use it when the weather is decent, Ive got the inline for anything else.
erussell
Their prices aren't unreasonable! Looking at the DIY kit? No, not really handy with wood working, or putting things together without wrapping it around the nearest tree
erussell
good hunting video, shows how effective a good flintlock can be. Also good music.
nyslowhand
Watched vids a couple times because I couldn't believe what I saw. Same guy was shooting left & right handed. Neat videos!
erussell
glad I watched the videos, he made the point about getting a fowler because its a multiple use gun. Its accurate enough to shoot deer but you can hunt small game with it to. Looks like I need to do a little research on this.
nyslowhand
Looks like a very neat hobby. I'm too impatient for that. All 3 vids were interesting! What's with the snakes???? One thing that looked whacky was him sitting in the treestand, full camo & a flintlock. Somehow the old rifle looked way out of place. You do know if you get into this there are a couple of additional requirements. Gotta go to a rendezvous, reenactment or BP camp/shoot. Went to a few several years ago put on by a BP club and those guys go all out authentic. TeePees, clothing, couple of indians, traditional foods, trade blanket, shooting contests,... Very, Very cool!!! Also need a persona, do a search ( persona muzzleloader ) on the web - this is how far these guys go! Maybe primitive trekking? erussell
I think I have decided to build a gun. There are some good kits out there and have a few friends who said they would give me a hand if I got stuck. Think I am looking at this gun. Now just need to figure out if I want it in 20 gauge or 54 cal rifled, decisions, decisions. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/%28S%28d0vmac03hnx4a4rzhsnxup15%29%29/Categories/gunKit.aspx?catId=13&subId=77&styleId=289&partNum=FRENCH-TYPE-C-TRADE-GUN-PARTS-LIST
nyslowhand
Going to do it, huh? Like I mentioned, I did a T/C Hawken percussion kit & it was fun!! It's been decades, but I do remember having a problem with bluing (or brown) the barrel. Mostly the size of it, heating it up or getting an appropriate container to put solution & barrel in... Don't recall! I'm sure you've done all your research and made your decision based on what you want. FYI - The cost of the parts for the kit you mentioned is approching a decent already built model. There is a lot of self gratitude building one and shooting or hunting with it!!!
erussell
Yeah that's why I choose the kit I did it was there easiest kit to put together. Plus for and extra 100 they'll put your barrel together correctly. Browning does sound like a pain and blueing sounds like a mess.
