growalot
A couple of years ago when everyone said they were having such a bad hunting season...that there was just too much food around... Well be prepared it looks to be another one of those years in parts of the state...I went out to stretch my legs and back after yesterdays 8hr jury sit. Last nights storm helped to drop thousands of acorns and hickory nuts...all small but they were hit hard already...I thought I had 6 producing in one area...we have two hundred reds...well the ground was blanketed in one area so I went out to recount...I stopped at 29 in the one area and haven't checked the rest of the property....all the hickories are dropping...The wild blk cherries and the choke cherries are all ripening and getting hit hard We've all discussed the bumper crop of apples and pears for some....where they couldn't plant corn ....oats and red clover went in...they came yesterday and chopped the fields ...so now there is a tender stand of red clover on one side of us and crimson clover to the south of us...yep they may not be moving to much during the day this year....How all my plans have changed in just one walk...lol Edited July 23, 2013 by growalot
Five Seasons
i have the hickories too. and a lot more apples. wondering if it'll prevent them from being concentrated from the few that did produce like last year.
wdswtr
The problem I see is the nuts are already dropping. Not during the deer season like normal. I have just about zero apples from a late frost killing and all nuts are premature and falling. My hardest deer hunting seasons were not from too much available food but too little and its seems its going to be another one of those years. growalot
One day I was resting on a log half way up the hill ...I start hearing stuff falling and could see the squirrels were very active in the tree tops...then a clump of leafs and acorns fell at my feet...that's when I realized what was going on... I stayed and watched a bit longer and the squirrels were climbing along the oak batches and biting the acorns and some times whole twigs with them, off the main limbs....they'd do this for a while then scurry down to pick up their loot...occasionally there would be another squirrel that would get there first..... a hell of a fight would happen...some... some ...not all but some of what we assume is an early drop are the squirrels we should be hunting in the fall and early winter not waiting for them to ripen...
