damore81
I have an opportunity to head into Northern Zone for the regular season opener this weekend and hunt 100 acres of private land. I have been told it has a 1000ft wide active beaver dam which will be exciting to see. Any body hunt the Rome area? If so what should I expect as far as deer population and agriculture? New York Hillbilly
Rome may be considered Northern Zone but it's really pretty much on the most southern portion and as such pretty much like what you would find in the southern zone. In and around Rome is some dairy farming, crop farms, Erie Canal flats, Fish Creek, Delta Lake, and small towns like Marcy, Stittville, Oriskany. North of Rome you start getting into some pretty hilly areas like Westernville, and there are big chunks of State land. That direction you will be getting closer to the Tug Hill plateau where it snows like nobody's business. Lots of deer in and around Rome. I'm not sure of the hunting pressure there anymore since the airbase closed up and all the factories moved out, but if you have access to 100 acres of private land, with a little effort you should do pretty good. Good luck! Hope this helps. Peace Edited October 27, 2013 by New York Hillbilly
