It depends on what ammo you are using.

For liability reasons due to the fact that some older military ( or commercial) 8 MM's might not be safe with high pressure modern ammo, domestic manufacturers have always loaded the ammo to lower chamber pressures, making the 8x 57 ballistically similar to the 30-30 or 32 Win Special, which are basically 150-200 yard ( max) rounds..

However, the 8 x 57 , loaded to it's potential, as it is loaded in Europe, is a much more powerful chambering, in the same class as the 30-06, making it capable of cleanly taking game at ranges of 350 yards or a bit farther.

Nice, we were discussing the 8mm Mauser last Saturday on the way down hunting. My father has one and now that I am into reloading we were talking about bringing it back to life or at least attempting too. I don't know much about it so I found this interesting.

Handloaded, it is a fine all around chambering, Doe.

Is your Dad's rifle a commercial model or a military one ?

If it's military, is it orignal or sporterized..?...

We rifle loonies need DETAILS..<<grin>>...

Oh geeze a test..

As far as I know its military and sporterized, now I have to see it..

Its funny as soon as I set up my stuff, all these gun ideas popped up from my family, haha.

My brother recalled a Whelan 35 he saw on sale two years ago and how he wishes he bought it now and then the 8mm was brought up.
