antler growth

How does this process work.  Ive heard that a 6 point buck will loose his antlers and still be a 6 point buck when they grow back next year based on genetics?.. is this statement true?... Or can a 8 point turn into a 10 point the next season?

Genetics and diet is key to antler growth but diet plays a huge factor. Chances are a 6 point will most likely have more points but the rack will be bigger based on what the deer is eating. Having said that a deer won't always grow more points but it will grow wider, taller thicker and so on, it all depends on the deer. For instance, a small 10 point can become a big 9 point. Or a big 8 point can become an even bigger 8 point.

they need quality food, that's true, however they need age also

Genetics and age are the biggest 2. A buck needs protein(sp) to grow his rack. A wild buck in most parts of Ny gets a 14% diet in that range easy with the farm crops. Now up in the hills could be a stretch for that for sure. We have what it takes in most parts of the states to grow nice deer. We just need age in most areas and other areas we need the deer itself. I know our numbers are way down in my neck of the woods. 

 From some reading on here it sounds as im not alone!
