Hunting in Orange County

After reading the DEC page, it looks like the closest down state county to hunt with a riffle is Orange County. 

 

I have been hunting on Private land, but would like to get out on to Public Land. What are things to look for while in Orange County? Has anyone hunted at Pochuck State Forest? If so, is there areas to park? Ease of use for a first timer on Public Land?

I have hunted Stewart state Forrest a couple times only 45 minutes from lower westchester.

Never hunted Pochuck, but you might want to try Sterling Forest. It has a lot more land to hunt.

Stewart State does not allow rifles.  It's shotgun only.  And muzzleloaders too.

Or there are a few places in Sullivan that are still in 3m and not that far.... Roosa gap wustaboro open space and bashakill wma to name a few
