NYDeer
I am looking into getting some to improve my odds. I'm looking for decoys for a field/ground spread I can set out myself, so weight is a concern. What brand/type do you guys recommend, or avoid? Thanks. jr.deerslayer
The absolute best are the full bodied Big Foots but there heavy and hard to carry. But I would take two dozen of those over 75 sillouettes.
DTG3k
I was also thinking about this. Will the Geese every really get close enough to tell the difference between Shells and full body decoys?
jr.deerslayer
sure we try not to shoot untill there a couple feet above the decoys
NYDeer
The reviews on Cabelas/redhead have guys raving by the silhouettes as well.. They look like 'sharpened' photos printed on some type of vynil/plastic..
jr.deerslayer
Silhouettes are great to add quantity to your spread and add as fillers, they look spot on from the side, but realize that geese fly, so there not always looking directly at the side, what happens when they are directly overhead, those big silhouettes look pretty thin i would imagine. We use them in conjunction with shells and full bodied decoys and there very easy to carry alot of them and dont take up hardly any room. Full bodied decoys are the biggest pain in the balls there are. Heavy, they take up way too much room, very expensive and you'll be exhausted setting them by yourself, but they work, and work the best. DTG3k
sssurfertim. Nice collection you got there, what region did you hunt these in?
sssurfertim
I live on the southshore of LI, We are allowed 8 geese here til march 8th.
DTG3k
That is right, Long Island is broken up into 3 parts, with different seasons. The western most part has by far the best season, but their is no public land to hunt. So unless you own some land, its impossible to hunt it. sssurfertim
All I hunt is public land, the entire southshore of longisland is huge marshes, you can hunt pretty much anywhere. BUT....you need a boat, there are not many places you can just walk into. Pretty much if its tidal its legal as long as your far enough from houses. DTG3k
That is good to know. Thanks. How many floaters do you usually put out?
jr.deerslayer
On the water there is no minimum distance to houses
sssurfertim
Yes but you would be stupid to setup right behind someones house, it may be legal within 500ft but its not smart.........I put out 6 floaters and 6 to 12 fullbodies or silloettes. No kidding I just thought id add that in case someone happened to give him a hard time. And id rather set up closer to a house than not at all
NYDeer
Nice Bag Tim! Really, 8 till march? I though Feb 13 or 14 was the last day.. I wouldn't want you off my yard blasting away, so I wouldn't consider doing it myself to someone else.. Just on the island so far, just getting into it. Boat's been packed away from fall, so it's land hunts only for me.. I think I'm going out to fireplace neck Friday If I can arrange it.. DTG3k
Im Pretty sure today(Feb 9th) was the last waterfowl hunting day East of SunkenMeadow/Sagtikos Parkway. The only seasons left are the long one that is west of SunkenMeadow/Sagtikos and east of the Nassau/Queens Border. Then their is one upstate later this month. So you may want to get that boat out.
