It would be nice to know what it is he's using.  It would seem like some sort of fine material that helps bond to the second layer forming a seal and probably seeping into the cracks to help reinforce the seal.  Very cool stuff!  Thanks Growalot!  I might be able to find out some info.  I will check.

Looks like he was probably using Bentonite.  This explains it pretty good.

Thanks for looking that up...now that I'm on the computer I'm thinking it was something more in the line of this stuff...there are many variations out there and it's cheaper than Bentonite....

Could be, my buddy is big into ponds I asked him and then looked it up.  He said they use clay too, really amazing things we can do today.  Great way to make a spot into a watering hole!
