Why does Governor Andrew Cuomo really want to legalize marijuana?

Recommended Posts

Legalization is certainly popular with his “progressive” base and others who fail to accept the fact recreational users of marijuana use it to alter their mental state.  Sounds like a mental illness affliction if they need a narcotic.  Apparently he can count on their vote.

Still it is no secret of Cuomo’s on going war against the Second Amendment.  When Cuomo passed the SAFE Act he made thousands of law abiding contributing New Yorkers criminals overnight by their possession of a firearm that looks like something used in the military.

Still Federal law can prohibit your purchasing a firearm if:

“Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance? Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it has been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside.” (ATF Form 4473, page 1, item 11. e.)

So can the State of New York use this denial as grounds to confiscate firearms already in your possession since you could be deemed “unfit” to purchase another firearm?

The New York State pistol permit application asks:

“Are you an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance as defined in section 21 U.S.C. 802?”

Those who would purchase marijuana in New York if/when legalized would need to answer YES.

Just because Cuomo says dumb things like “You don’t need ten bullets to kill a deer” he is intelligent in his own right and clearly knows what he is doing.  Any firearm owner acquiring marijuana for recreational use places themselves in jeopardy with both the Federal and New York State firearm possession qualifications.

So Cuomo gets more voters who believe in “progressive” legislation and he gets to disarm formerly law abiding gun owners like was done under the SAFE Act.  If you cannot make firearms illegal you just legislate them out of existence.

I’ve had similar concerns regarding mental illness impacting gun ownership. I know many who take anti depressants/anxiety meds and that medication “balances” them. However if those meds would be an obstruction from owning a gun they would forgo the meds. Mental illness complicated things
