Tried Making A Box Call

After looking at the box call I bought, I thought to myself "How hard can it be to glue some wood together and make a striker/top?". So early last May I gave it a try. It actually wasn't that hard. Some red oak and a about an hour to cut, glue, and shape the top. Then I sanded the round for the top and rounded out the sides for aesthetics. I used an aluminum screw to secure it together which ended up snapping and the top came out a little short, but did have an OK sound to it. I have to round down the inner wall tops a bit, and make a new top at some point. I never got to finish the modifications as I was on new puppy duty most of May.

I did get to use the pot strikers I made the few times I got out. A combination of red oak and poplar to make these 4.

Anyone who's made a box call have any advice?
