  1. Of course it is RR ready corn. Corn is a grass, so if it is not RR it would have died weeks ago when I sprayed. Fertilizer costs... with Semi-free seed... yes NWTF per acre I am guessing 200 per acre. You can grow a good crop of corn for less, but all you are going to do is drain your soil of it's value.
  2. Corn, I bush hog the corn in Feb/march depending on snow depth etc. Soil test when I can get a shovel in the ground Plow Disc Drag with a drag harrow Spread fertilizer usually 300 pounds per acre of triple 15, then broadcast corn, usually 20 pounds per acre Then I re-drag to cover, at week 4-6 after germination I spread urea, I like 150-200 pounds per acre, you must do this right before a heavy rain otherwise you are going to lose the N to the atmosphere. Week 4-8 I spray generic round up... I base my timing on the weeds. I just run over the corn to spread urea and or spray weeds.... it doesn't effect your crop.
  3. Hey George, No I paid out the azzz for it. We will see. I am also putting in strips of oats the last weekend in August along the edges and through a trail in the corn. I just use feed oats for my plantings... cheap!
  4. Grow.... hard to see but I put the main T post as the tree support and then I put in half inch conduit around the tree to prevent buck rubs.... it should work. I also use aluminum window screen at the bottom to prevent voles, etc from girdling the bases and prevent apple borer damage.
  5. Thought I would share some pics from around the farm... Clover, 21 tree apple orchard and 4 acres of corn should keep them happy Another view of the corn plot. I broadcast my corn and wouldn't waste my time or money with a planter! This area was planted in Spring Buckwheat, yesterday I planted it in Brassicas just in time for the rain yesterday. I am trying WI Winter Greens for the first time. I don't use Buck on Bag seed usually, but wanted to try this for my own after hearing some good buzz on winter greens. Doubt I will notice a difference Close up of the orchard. These trees are 4 and 5 years old, fence came down this year. Clover is king, this is on the opposite side of the corn plot. This clover is SPRING planted last year... yes you can plant in the Spring if you have the tools and knowledge. This is a enterprise 5th leaf on b118 5th leaf means this summer is it's 5th year in my ground Crimson Golds 4 year old tree. 4th leaf on M7 This is a little 1/3 acre plot tucked in heavy mature woods. All day sits here are productive.
  6. The key is to let the 1.5 year olds walk and then keep your harvest restrictions realistic and fun. I think they way WNYBH is going about it is great. It adds fun, challenges, yet is reasonable. Getting more bucks past 1.5 will give hunters a lot more options and better bucks to hunt. Youth, the very old, first time hunters should have green lights on anything.
  7. I picked one up at the Rochester Gun Show in January. It is a great pistol. Feels great, looks great and shots very well.
  8. This is why I wear one year round...
  9. You are likely going to have to knock on some doors to seek permission. Rochester Brooks Gun Club is a great facility, as is Genesee Conservation league. Check them both out.
  10. Our July Branch Newsletter Link https://www.dropbox.com/s/h4x2rhx4y9iba18/GRSTnewsletterJuly2013.pdf New Link Sorry!
  11. Thanks Doewhacker..... if we do nothing more than open eyes as to what the Organization does for every deer hunter we will be happy. We locally want to help in the community and give back.. the best part of QDM is being a manager as in making things better, improving habitat, vs being a consumer like the ol traditional hunter mindset who just takes from our resources.
  12. Zach.... will do. And Thanks. We have a great bunch of guys... 15 who work well together and we have alot of fun... combine that with the great support we recieve with the fact that we do things well.... makes us successful. We are acutally working on our first Branch News letter and hope to have it emailed and linked via constant contact in the next 48 hours or so. We hope to do a newsletter every quarter, rather than just email list. If anyone is interested in recieving branch news please email me your contact info... mainly name and email. We dont share your info and all emails are sent BC so no one can see your info. [email protected] Mike
  13. I also would like to thank everyone. We have had a great start and will continue to do so. The organization has a lot of support in the Greater Rochester area! I would also like people to start to learn about what the QDMA really does and get beyond antler restrictions. This organization fights for every deer hunter and at time when our hunting heritage is being attacked heavily every deer hunter should be concerned. Take a few minutes and learn about the organization before you form an opinion often formed by mis-information! March 1, 2014, a Saturday we will have 2 guest speakers visit us for two great lectures on whitetail hunting. Our speakers will be Matt Ross, QDMA Forester and Biologist and Neil Dougherty of North Country Whitetails. Neil manages over 300,000 acres across the country and is a great habitat manager. They also have a new book out that is great. Check out www.northcountrywhitetails.com for more info on the book. Save the Date. Details will be forth coming but it will be near 90 and 390. Likely will start at 9 AM. Our first lecture series in Jan 2013 we had 120 people show up, our field day we had over 60 way down in Steuben. This will be a great morning! Also check out our outreach programs thread here: http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/16870-announcing-3-new-outreach-programs-gr-rochester-s-tier-qdma/ You will see we are about more than antlers! Thanks Mike
  14. It cant hurt to talk to your neighbors.... it has to start somewhere.... there are co-ops in our area over the 20,000 acre mark. More property the better.... but results are real and when the 1.5 year buck makes up 54%, 2.5 is 28% and 3.5 is 18% in NY obviously we have a ways to go. These are 2011 numbers... most recent I have.
  15. Co-ops are a great way to increase your chances at getting a buck past 1.5 years of age here in trigger happy NY. You mention it wouldn't be a QDMA kinda thing... this is totally a QDMA thing and they have resources to help you if you are interested. As others have said, it takes like minded people. I would also suggest keeping your harvest goals realistic and still have fun. There is no doubt passing 1.5 year olds can make your chances of seeing and harvesting older age class bucks. People will argue and mention a ton of people they know where it doesn't work... nonsense. They can not get to an older age class of bucks if they don't get past 1.5 A 1.5 year old is around the human age of 13, in fact they still have milk teeth. Voluntary AR's are the way to go, they are not perfect by any means,.. and there are many ways to set up your own harvest goals. I use 8 pt or better for visitors on my property, I use age, but I can age on the hoof. Remember QDMA promotes passing on all 1.5 year olds and some 2.5 year olds, but it is up to you. There is a lot more to QDMA or QDM that antlers. Joseph you want further info reach out to me!
  16. You should never let a bear climb up , Bear Spray (pepper Spray), or standing up and waving hands is recommended, if that fails waving hands and talking to it, last resort shot it. This is what I read in a black bear hunting book I read before going on my hunt.
  17. Remember fertilizer numbers represent the % in weight of the total bag. So 10-10-10 in a 50 pound bag has 10% of each, or 5# of each, 15 pounds total fert and the rest is filler. N-P-K Nitrogen-Phosphorous-Potassium. Using a combo of 0-20-20 and 46-0-0 is often more economical, depending on your crop and soil test. I think 0-20-20 is around $13 a 50 pound bag, and 46-0-0 is around $15.50 15-15-15 is around $14 to 15 per 50 pounds.
  18. Thanks to everyone who came out for an educational fun day. Special Thanks to Neil and Craig Dougherty of North Country Whitetails for hosting the event. We had over 65 show up.
  19. We had little post bloom frosts this year and ample rain... very good year for apples, the high amount of rain has brought out more apple scab, but the deer wont mind if you are not on a spray program.
  20. This is a great book if you are new to foodplotting. http://www.qdma.com/shop/quality-food-plots-with-free-on-the-hoof-booklet
  21. The best time to spray round up is in the morning when it is going to be a hot day, no rain in the forecast is best. I have sprayed 3-4 hours before a rain and got a good kill. Buy generic Round up it is a lot cheaper, I agree with grow I add surfactant even though the brand I of generic I use has surfactant in it all ready. I order mine from keystone pest solutions online... it maybe available locally. If you need to borrow that one sprayer let me know....
  22. If you have a ton of clover around, maybe consider a solid chicory plot. Seed is a little expensive, but deer love it... it may draw them like you want. That would be tops on my list.... I know splitG2 did a chicory only plot... not sure how it did. Don't discount radishes, brassicas........................
  23. We can try to do it sometime soon..... getting through saturday and finding hay and getting the lawn seeded is my biggest issue right now... but lets do it soon.
