Sort of, I buy and plant apple trees every year... this year I helped some guys save some money. Planting the 3 pears I am keeping will set things up perfectly and I do have plans for another 6-8 apple trees. I really wanted Freedom this year and they only could send me those on 106 rootstock, 106 is prone to collar rot so I refused those and I will wait for 111 or 118. I have 30 "new" apple trees producing as well as the old apple trees on the farm I am working on... plenty of softmass.

Pav, As long as you can dig the soil it is fine to plant them as they are still dormant. I actually bought all of them for my farm with a few extras for some friends... and I sold all but 3 of them... so I dont have 37 holes to dig, just 3. If you buy in larger quanities you save $$$$$$ normally these are 25-32 each, but over 25 it drops to 14-16, over 100 even more. The 2014 order will be over 100.

I am very happy with my Adams County Nursery order this year. Look at the calipers on these trees. Stated as 1/2 -feathered and 5/8 to 3/4... they are huge 3 types of pears, liberty on 118 and enterprise on 111. Great looking trees. Ignore the dirty barn... lol

Belo, You have another area that you want to plant??? But not worked yet? How Big? One thing I saw in your post when you planted your clover triple 15, There are references on using some Nitrogen when starting clover, but I never have, mainly that extra N will help those weeds take off as well, Clover once established needs P & K, it should be based on a soil test... but you can put P & K down with out one. I would suggest on the other site, try a fall planted clover planting mixed with some annuals and then you will have a comparison and can share your observations. You could wait to work the soill until late July, I would spray it mid July with RU, the work 3 weeks later. OR you could work it now plant buckwheat..... if you can bushhog and plow it under in later july. Buckwheat will grow on a rock, is an excellent weed blocker and when can be turned in the soil and excellent way to improve soil conditions. I dont know what you have for equipment. Buckwheat can grow 2.5 ft to 3 feet and thick, Turkeys like it if it goes to seed, bears like it, deer will nibble on it a touch, but not a big draw IMO. If it goes to seed then you do your fall planting, you will get some volunterr buckwheat in the new plot, this is fine and it will die with a frost.

I also use biologic for my soil samples... it is cheap and they email the results in 2-3 days... it is a basic test, but it is fine for the average weekend warrior. Happy Plotting!

I do agree that Fall planting for clover, in a mix of annuals to get it started is the best. I do have alot of experience and equipment, and I am willing to try to share my knowlegde and help anyone. We are having a Habitat Field Day on Saturday June 29, 2013, details will be shared once we get past the Banquet on this Saturday. The Rochester QDMA Branch is making education outreach, wounded vets, youth, and Gun rights our focus. There are mulitple ways to skin a cat, and the best way to learn is through gaining hand on experience and making mistakes. For any foot plot the critical things is seed to soil contact, especially small seeds like clover, brassica. If you have a nice smooth seed bed then seed on top and then roll with a cultipacker or even a lawn roller it will help germination. Clover tolerates over seeding... brassicas DO NOT. Cleth http://www.keystonepestsolutions.com/arrow-2ec-herbicide-1-gallon-select-2ec-26-4-clethodim-115.html Spray when the grasses are an issue, and growing, DO NOT mow for grass problem it makes it worse. Also spray any product by following the label, the label is the law. They also do better when temps are over 60. You need to use surfactant or crop oil with cleth.... it is pretty cheap.

I am not trying to disagree with the weed issue with clover planted in the spring, but I have had great success first spring planted clover. Here are 2 plots planted in April 2012, pictures from 2012 I prefer predictable rain, I seed my clover heavy, Both plots mowed once, and I sprayed cleth on the one with the deer in the picture once to control some grass problem I had.

I am not sure what you have on your farm or on surrounding properties, but clover is king in my book. It should give you 5 years if done right, deer, bear, Turks will enjoy it... and it is pretty easy to grow and affordable. I tend to use generic ladino clover... and have had great success.

I think possibly 2.5, not 3.5 Again I think his tarsal staining more heavy than most 1.5 year olds. Hope he makes it.
-
Grow you sure did a tough pic to age with the time of year. He is above 1.5 due to the left over tarsal staining, I would guess he is 2.5 or 3.5 but if he is 3.5 he is in some stress.

I wouldnt spray an older tree for deer, unless it's vegetation is getting hammered say by jap bettles, tent catipllars With older trees, clearing trees on the South, West, East side helps a ton, sun is your friend. Removing dead wood helps, but pruning of green wood should be done in stages, most do a 3rd at a time to prevent or limit suckering. New wood generally makes apples on older trees. Growing apples is an art and a science, but it is fun and a great way to improve your habitat and hunting.
