  1. Thanks everyone. I will look into a lock that goes thru the brake rotor. I agree a trailer is needed and probably get this year. It is an eventual purchase now that my oldest is 8yrs it is something fun I can take him for a ride etc..wasn't on my list when they were babies haha weve just left it home. I appreciate everyone's insight. The first time they tried to hot wire it I kinda pieced together that they came on quads because otherwise they would have attempted to cut the chain and throw it in a truck..I agree nothing will stop them they know whos around and who is not at these seasonal homes unfortunately.
  2. Hi all..wondering if anyone has any suggestions...heres the back story. I have an atv we used to keep up at our property in a shed, it was attempted to be stolen. They actually hot wired the damn thing. But they didnt realize the battery was missing we actually brought it home for the winter. They also didnt notice it was chained to the floor. So luckily they didnt take it. I havent left the quad up there since it was broken in to over 9yrs ago. We now have a locked gate at entrance to our private road which has seemed to deter most curious but ballsie idiots. The guy down the road from me has a huge shed with tons of utv and atvs and he hasnt had any issues. He is a new neighbor by about 5yrs. Its very rural Delaware county mountain. We dont have a trailer though or id bring it up every trip... so I was thinking of getting it up their this spring till end of deer season and bring it home for the winter. My question is...are there any mechanisms that would secure an atv....my husband said "see how hard it is to take a wheel off and bring it home" hes not cery mechanical so i wasn't sure to completely discount that idea or maybe hes on to something...? It just doesn't seem like an easy task lol.... the shed floor is just wood..its not a concrete floor. So if they really wanted to I guess someone could tear apart the floor to get it loose from the chain and lock. Im also gonna look into new hinges with coach bolts perhaps..something that cant be unscrewed from outside. We only go to our property for a few days since its no running water or electric. And its 250 miles from home...we live on long island. Thanks!
  3. I got the .270 Remington 700 model (or 770) cant remember off the top of my head.
  4. Have you decided on a caliber? Im 5'6 and not a delicate girl...i had prior experience with the 20g and .22. I used chuck hawks to help me decide few years ago. I decided on the .270 Remington. I have no trouble holding it and the recoil is fine.
  5. Alot of great information here! You guys are great!
  6. Thank you for all the congratulations! I do believe they do sell hunting gear at sports authority by me although I haven't been in that store in a while now to know if they still sell guns.
  7. Thats all great information thanks! I will sure to be looking around at all of those. I used to go to the campsite when I was a kid with my dad. It is a nice place just too far for me now. I got the 20g Mossberg 500 field model in wallnut has 26" barrel. Going to try out the mossy oak gun skin to camo it for Turkey. That is my Springer! he's 8yrs old now. He is really a great dog. Very loyal and loves the woods. Just never had time to train him for upland when he was a pup because of my kids.
  8. Hi everyone..so its my wedding anniversary and I got my husband to agree to go in on a pump shotgun for me...obviously im not a diamonds kinda girl. What online stores with decent prices are recommended for accessories..like chokes, sights. Or any websites you guys use for researching about shotguns. Locally I have a Dick's, Walmart and Sports Authority in town. Probably buying a 20g Mossberg or Remington today. Want it for Turkey, and skeet at the moment.
  9. anyone in Suffolk County have a harness available? my uncle's leaving his older stand up on my property for me.

    BIG BEAR

    any more recent photos!?
  11. congratulations...I am interested in getting a bow eventually! only have a rifle at the moment.
  12. I am a girl 5'6 and when I was picking out a rifle I decided on the .270 it is enjoyable to shoot.
  13. Well it sounds like you lucked out on using your buddys gun, sounds like it will work out nicely. I was also worried about the recoil. I picked out a bolt action .270 Remington. I do love my gun it gives a little kick but its tolerable and shoots great. I want either a bow or a pump shotgun by next year so I can hunt on long island where I live.
  14. on the contrary to all you guys....I can't get my HUSBAND out. he's got his license but I only have one rifle and a few old shotguns. he has his bow that probably needs some tlc. Maybe if I get a bow eventually we can go out together! I really need to find some girl -friends who like to hunt. but that seems impossible!
  15. Welcome! I also have 5 acres in east branch. looks like we all got a lot of neighbors here.

    BIG BEAR

wow! I have a cabin near east branch and have seen a lot of bear scat but I don't have a trail cam yet.
  17. okay. well i guess he took care of it for us this time haha. thanks for replying!
  18. we have a dry cabin in Delaware county...there's a little porta potty for my kids inside the cabin and we were leaving two weekends ago and noticed it was over full and me and my mom were not interested in cleaning as we used up all of our water for the weekend. we carried it outside i figured wed clean it next time. that sucker was heavy. well we got here last night and the full potty was all apart and empty and moved about 15 feet from where it was. my mom is insisting its a porcupine....she's a little in denial of the fact that I know there's bear up here have seen the scat but we never seen one... so it musta been a bored trespasser....or a bear? would a bear be attracted to human waste like that? possibly just curious of it?
  19. hey guys, wanted to get my husbands .22 lr the fixed last time I used it, it kept misfiring etc.. any good gunsmith that can be recommended on long island, preferably east of huntington..bensons probably closest to me...and what are usual time tables to fix them generally? thanks!
  20. Me and my family attended the Suffolk county event in Ridge. It was my first time, and we will probably make it into a yearly trip since its 15minutes away if they keep it at the ridge dec. My son got some archery lessons from Smith point archery joad. He loved it, I may have a young bow hunter in the making. He is turning 7 in November so he has some time or maybe I have some time to prepare haha. We saw pointing dogs locate birds in a field. Wish there were more flushing groups on long island. Took the kids fishing. Overall good day. Not too many vendors but it was still a nice day spent.
  21. Welcome, I am new to the forum as well.
  22. I agree about the shows, I only have nbc sports channel though. I wish I saw some northeast shows as well. Last weekend I saw "Deer and Deer hunting Tv" and I thought that was one of the better shows that could be helpful so I set it to my dvr. and even though it portrayed a rich family with endless time and resources which is unrealistic for me, I liked "aarons outdoors", mainly because I am a woman with two kids to relate. One episode I will always remember the wife took the 2/3 yr old girl out in a tree stand, the mother whispered to her daughter "what do you see?" The daughter whispered back..."grass!" small things like that gave me a chuckle.
  23. Yep my 7yr old son will probably be joining me alot in the future, my daughter who is 5yrs old is interested too. I want them to be able to understand everything though, and appreciate nature and what it gives us. I have a Remington .270 Win, it fits me well, I wanted something with not too much kick but that could take down whitetails no problem. I have been shooting the 130grain. Haven't tried the 150 grain yet. I have two old single shot shotguns (12,20g) that were my fathers but I don't want to use them because they are from about 1940 and 1960 I think. When I can, my next purchase will be to buy a camo pump shotgun, something I can do Turkey with. But if I want to try other things, something I can switch a barrel out for etc. (I was using my mother in laws pump 12 &20g shotguns that were collecting cob webs literally till my brother in law had a fit when he found out we had them after 8yrs of him not using them he randomly wanted them. So to not cause a big fight we just gave them to him, so my husband promised to buy me a shotgun when he can. Stupid family dynamics)
  24. Thanks everyone! Haha funnnnnnnyyyy law, I don't know why I was up at 430am, but Monday-thru Friday I am up at 5am for work so my body wakes up on weekends around that time sometimes I guess. Hi paula, yes I know there are few of us around, I am sure I wouldnt be into hunting if I wasn't raised going to our cabin on weekends my whole life. It definitely shaped who I am, and am thankful for that. Luckily my kids love going upstate, my husband I am working on. And yes elmo, I will be skipping this season out, although a little part of me is wanting to go I am crazy like that. I think its best to skip out, my area is part of the new AR in 4w not that I ever saw any bucks, but maybe it will be even better next year. I found some fresh scrapes on the ground last November and I was so excited to do that on my own. Small steps, I am thinking of buying and playing with a camera next summer.
