Hey fellow Archermen and women. My Brother and I drove down to camp Thursday evening, didn't get set-up and in bed until 1 am. I knew I wouldn't want to get up in the morning but obviously the rut is starting to get under way. Plus, we haven't been to camp since Oct. 15th or something. We both had the itch. I'll fast forward, in the stand 6:30, at 8:08 I see this buck behind me, he's at about 30 in lots of trees walking away, he's about to cross the powerline that runs through our property which would put him at 50-70 yards. Well he does what we all pray for, he picks up the scent drag at about 40 or so yards, snaps his head 180* and walks right in to about 17 yards. I placed a nice 100 grain Muzzy through both lungs, and he expired within 70-100 yards. My best buck to date, I'd say he weighed in the ballpark 175-185, he's a brute and even with incredible adrenaline, it still took a while to drag him out. I'm back home and I'm going back for a doe Tuesday-Friday. Good Luck to ALL!!!

This is a true story: Back in my college years - Buffalo State I had class until 4. My buddy called me and said, "hey you free for an evening hunt? Headed to my Uncles and you are welcome to come out with me!!!" I We're talking about archery hunting, heck yea I said!!! Unfortunately, I tell him I can't get to his house until 5ish, I was 50 mintues from his Uncle's property not to mention we hung stands literally 5-10 days earlier. Fast Forward 8 hours later I meet him and we head out. Do to fading daylight I don't have time to remove hair gel, deodorant, don't remember if I had cologne on (these were my vane days) but probably did. Either way, changed clothes grab bow we headed our separate ways. On stand 15 minutes I see Momma and baby 100 yrds out, I hit fawn bleat every couple of minutes and get them within 40-50 yards before they disappear into brush. Not 5 minutes later I hear twig break to left, I see a big bodied buck on full trot approaching at 50 yards. I didn't have time to focus on deer but I did notice it only had a rack on 1 side of his head. He gets within 20 yards, I put an arrow over his belly, he then picks up speed as I knock another arrow and I put one over his back, he stops in his track and looks in my direction, as i'm knocking the third arrow he starts a full run I release arrow at 40 yards and hit him in rear leg (missing the femoral artery) he bolts crashing into everything until he finally makes it out of sight. I get my buddy, we find hair and little blood. He calms me down and convinces me not to go looking for the deer until tomorrow morning. It POURS ALL NIGHT, we get my Dad and head out in the morning, we can't find any blood and after 15 minutes we begin butterfly patterns, I walked up on the deer in less then 150 yards. To this day I credit my buddy for recovering this deer. The best part of the story when I grabbed the one side of the rack but buddy yelled look at his other side, he had a 3 inch brow tine and a drop tine that was growing along side his eye. He ended up being a 5 point...!!! It's not big but I got a free mount from my local taxidermist. It's a cool rack and an even better story. This was when I was a young, dumb, immature hunter, I did everything wrong from scent control to 2 missed shots and 1 incredibly irresponsible shot and got lucky. I don't know if its better to be lucky than good or if its all about getting out there!!! Sorry the post is so long, I get excited talking about it, that was 13 years ago....

Cool topic! I'm a bow hunting nut and I also happen to be a coffee nut as well!!! The two are delicacies in my book. Both of them intermingled on a crisp, clear, November morning is pure Utopia!!! But with that said..............I've killed my share of Deer afield with gun and the bow. I'm 32 and with my experience I have not had a Deer react negatively to coffee (that I know). However, what I don't enjoy is having to take a PI$$ from or near the stand (hunt tree stands only). Not only is a sometimes difficult to unzip clothing, it can be noisy and cold plus the amount of urine to boot!!! This is a bigger scent concern in my book!!! I won't give up my coffee and I'll keep hunting from tree stands. Get out as often as possible, you will see and be successful in the field. In my opinion, when you are hunting small parcels of property you cannot predict any given day. ATV's, People walking, neighbors grandchildren running around. Lots of different scents and smells. It has to do with hours put on stand! Thanks and good luck to you all..... Headed to camp Sunday morning for my first day yet.... Mike.

The problem for me and most of us is Work schedule. Being a weekend hunter its rather difficult to be abel to hunt 5-6 days in a row. I'm trying to decide which weekend I should plan to go down and sit all day in the woods. Just not enough time or Money. The Gov't shutdown is not helping matters. I will probably plan Veterans day weekend for my best effort. Mike.

Hi All, Back at it for another awesome season!!! Waiting to get down to camp again to hunt but in the process of scrapping a trailer and getting another hauled onto my property. I'm a few weeks behind but its rather warm anyway. I'm aiming for Oct. 21st to start my hunting....!!! I was wondering has anyone heard or read Charles Alsheimers Rut prediction this year. The best week to be in the woods? Please share your opinions and thoughts!!! Good Luck to ALL to a successful and safe season!!! Mike.

Biz, Looks great!!! Exactly, if I decide to get it mounted I will never shoot anohter one. It's kind of those One-time deals. But with a bow, to have hit it and a lot of people have never even seen one in the woods makes me want to do it. Mike.

Hey Everyone, Congrats on all the nice deer....!!! I have a story of my own. My brother and I went down Friday night. Saturday was terrible, we didn't see anything. Early Sunday morning my Dad joined us. By 8:30 Brother hit a nice doe. We decided to track it after 3 hrs, lots of blood up to 150 yrds and then is shut-off, we continued to search all morning to no avail. However, while tracking and splitting up, I noticed a large Porcupine on the edge of a path, I shot and harvested the porcupine, it was about a 27 yard shot. When I walked back to my brother, he said " nice to see you are really concentrating on finding my doe", I sort of felt bad, but there is only so much searching you can do before you go insane. We headed in for lunch. After lunch my Brother said, I'm going back to look for her again, I'm like, Chris you're out of your mind. He's like I have to, so he did. I said, well then I'm going to hunt your stand and shoot a buck, he said, "good, go for it." I went into his stand about 3. At 4:10 I had a nice doe step into view, she was 37 yards, I was hesitant because of the distance but she was broadside, I let my arrow fly. I heard a crash about 8 seconds after, I ended up going back to camp and telling my Brother what happened. We decided to go out at 9pm. We weren't on the trail 3 seconds and she was piled up, the crash I heard was her, blew it through both lungs. I will be honest it was more of a luck shot, I didn't know I hit her until I found my arrow in blood from broadhead to nock. Next morning, I decide to hunt my Dad's stand, he went home to paint a car. We got a late start, we didn't get into the stand until about 6:20. I was just putting my hands in my muff when I heard something walking, I thought it was my Brother and maybe he'd forgot something. As I nonchalantley turned I noticed a buck quickly walking at 50 yards, nose to ground. Before I knew it, he had closed to about 30 yards, I was at full draw when I whistled but he ended up picking up speed and I let my arrow fly at about 22 yards but a full trot. He went 20 yards and stopped, looked back towards me and literally tipped over. My Brother text me and said, "did you just shoot", he heard the shot, I said yes. He said, "did you hit him", I said not only did I hit him, he tipped over in front of me and is dead. This was so fast and surreal I wouldn't believe if someone had told me. He didn't last longer then 7 seconds. When I went to gut him, I literally cut his heart in half, clean pass through. The past 2 days were just amazing. I got a porcupine, which by the way is in my freezer, I might get it mounted, a nice doe and a small 5 point with an absolute brute of a body. He had a hole in his eye and an antler piercing right under his eye. He must have met another buck earlier in the week or that night. Since we are going back down Friday, Sat, and Sunday, hopefully my Brother will meet him!!!

Hi Fellow Archers, I haven't been to my cabin since 6/7th. I'm headed down Friday night. I will be there from Nov.3rd-12th. And as you guys were saying, My Brother and I are thinking the exact same thing, this weekend should be absolute dynamite!!! The temps are like 39/29 no rain and very little wind. It will also be 3-4 days after the rutting moon. It should be a frenzy in the woods guys. BE SAFE and SHOOT STRAIGHT!!! Mike.

First-Light, I'm a total beleiver in the rain. The rain makes scent smell that much stronger. We all have been around a dog on a humid/wet day and the smell is much stronger. Now let me make myself clear, you don't want a soaker or where it is uncomfortable to sit, but a steady rain is the best time. Hard to hear them obviously so have to keep your eyes peeled at ALL TIMES!!!

Hey Everyone. I just wanted to start a tread about Buck Bombs. I love them and I really can't say why. I've used them with and without success. I can't say that the times I did have success was because of the Buck Bombs, however they didn't hurt. I love the aersol dispesning idea. We all know a deer relies on its sense of smell more than anything else. If this is the case, I don't see how they cannot smell this stuff. The only problem is the cost, they are rather expensive!!! I never had an issue with a can malfunctioning. Please if interested or have experience let me know what you guys think or are thinking? I plan on hunting the rut from Nov. 6th-12th. I will use Doe n' Estrous and Dominate Buck! Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks, Mike.

Guys with the growing technology of the presence and the future we have to learn to use it to our advantage. agross: I do something similar but I leave it on vibrate and last year it paid off. I was hunting with my Brother, he was about 150 to 200 yards above me. It was around 800 am. My phone starts vibrating, "Buck, buck, headed straight to you". I immediately stood and grabbed my bow, within 5 seconds he was standing within 7 yards of my stand. He was actually passed my stand and beginning to quarter away, I stopped him with a quick gnnnnaaaaa sound and let my arrow fly at about 10 yards. Because he was so close and I was 24' up I hit him a little high on entry but figured the exit would be much better. He ran and busted out of sight at around 70 yards. I text my brother to let him know and that we would track him after lunch. We llet him go for about 6 hrs. The blood trail began to open up around 75-90 yards, he went another 75-100 yards where we found him piled up. From start to finish the tracking lasted about 10 minutes, I was using Muzzy 90's 4 blade. In this case the phone actually helped quite a bit, I keep it on vibrate and do phone texts about every hr or so. Won't be down until Nov. 6th-12th with my Brother. I hope we have the same repeat story of last year. Mike.

Hey my Fellow Archery Fanatics!!! I just joined after reading all the daily transactions by all of you. Great site and now I'm here. I went down opening weekend, my Brother and I. We saw about 4-6 doe each but were unable to get shots. I haven't been out the last two weeks but we have planned a trip down from Nov.6th-12th. We will be hunting hard, I'm bringing decoy and about 10 buck bomb's - Doe n' Estrous and Buck. Hopefully, we have timed the rut correctly, according to Mr. Charlie Alsheimer we should see some good action. Once again, thanks all and I will keep everyone posted. Looking forward to posting some nice deer as well as reading about yours. Good Luck All and be Safe!!! Mike.
