If anyone checks profiles on here, they would be aware that my .22 of choice was the Henry AR-7. Extremely lightweight and portable, but to me, it did have a few cons. The biggest of which was the sights. During the day the sights were fantastic, if you took the time to swap the rear sight blade around so that you have a smaller peep hole (its hard to hunt squirrels with the larger peep). During dawn or dusk, it was terrible, i couldn't see anything. I did some research and ended up trading the Henry for a Ruger 10/22. I bought it thursday night, and with work, I just got time this afternoon to shoot it for the first time. For a .22, very, very nice. Out of the box, I shot 2 clips at a circle I drew on a piece of paper the size of a quarter from exactly 25 yards. I chewed the circle right out of the paper!!! I'm not a superior marksman by any means, but for off-the-shelf performance!?!? Holy ****!! Just thought some might like the "hands-on review" I had to offer. If you're looking for an awesome .22, or your kid's first squirrel gun,, 10/22 all the way!!

Exactly!! This is all nonsense!! I love how our government "enforces" the laws, on the people who are doing their damndest to be law-abiding citizens. The criminals dont care what laws there are,, theyre going to do the same bullshit,, laws or not!! I don't know why the government doesnt see it this way. If I clearly tell a police officer, ECO, whatever, that I have an unloaded fire arm, i don't care where the ammo is, I have clearly pointed out any hazards to them. If they want to get picky, and follow word for word what the law book says, then maybe we should petition the state to send everyone to law school so we can completely understand, every article, sub-section, whatever.. I really cant stand the government sometimes..

Here is my coyote gun, or my APW as I call it (All-Purpose-Weapon haha!) I use it for just about everything. Deer, yotes, possums in the garbage, red-squirrels.. Over-kill for a lot of that, but it's fun and very cheap to shoot. It's a 1971 GP WASR 10/63, 7.62x39mm (obviously). It's got a top-mounted UTG CQB 3-9x36 Red/green illuminated scope, and a Browning Buckmark Reflex sight mounted on a 45-degree offset.

Seriously?? Wow.. I'm really glad I saw this. I usually put the rifle in the toolbox (in the back of my truck) and the clip (still loaded) in the glove box or center console.. This is still illegal!? And while we're on the topic. I was on break at work yesterday. I saw two hunters leaving a brush lot. One, a friend of mine, the other his father. There is a walking path 15 yards off the road, which parallels the road that they were walking up. A state trooper stopped them (again, I saw the entire thing from a distance) and told them that their weapons needed to be unloaded when walking along the road. They proceeded to unload, etc. My question is: These two guys were a minimum of 15 yards off the road. They were in no way shape or form on the road, and probably couldn't have hit it with spit. Did that trooper have any authority to tell them to unload their weapons while they were legally on private property??

Doc, thank you!! You seem to have the "Caddy" model with the peep sight, but other than that I'm convinced that it's an 81. The action is identical, even the cutout in the stock for the bolt handle is identical. Like you said, your trigger guard is a bit different, probably due to being newer. I would have to say that this would be a "base-model" gun based on some of the research I did. What stumps me is why anyone would want to make such a reliable gun, and not put their brand on it to take credit for it. I've been shooting this little gun a lot lately. I must say, I'll be using this over the henry. Im getting2.5- 3" dead center groups @ 50 yards, standing, with CCI Mini-mag 36gr hp's.

Haha thanks for the feedback guys!! I've ridden rockets before and they're a blast. They kill my back tho (i'm a tall guy that busts ass at a sawmill all day,, my back gets enough crap). Im more for the longer range rides, not to mention, I dont get the urge to do 140mph on my vtx haha! Thats actually my second bike, I still have the first ('02 Shadow Spirit 750, black). It will be painted, but in the mean time, we should organize a hunters ride or something haha!

that is a great site. I wouldn't trade that mustang seat for anything!! The first ride I did with it was a 440-mile round trip to Cabela's in Hamburg, PA and back.. Didn't get uncomfortable once!!

Figured you guys might like this haha! I bought this bike in July of this year. I got it from a real good friend of the family when he got a new ride. It's a 2004 Honda VTX 1300. (If you look close, you can see the little coon on the sidecover next to the passenger floorboard and exhaust) He had it air brushed by a local individual shortly after having the hard saddlebags on it. I'm thinking of getting it painted back to black, with a light metallic flake and a pearl. Not that hunting isn't my thing, but to me, bikes are a completely different sport haha! If you look close at the two pictures of the saddlebags, you can see the archer in there, and that who-ever painted it did a fair job of trying to make it a "3D-effect." I don't like the giant buck on the tank.. very tacky, though the sides of the tank aren't bad. It's seen a few rides. I outride a lot (safety/traffic control) with it. Odometer is just about to roll 23,000 miles. And of course, a few rides to the property with the Henry in the sidebag going out for red squirrels haha! Let me know what you guys think!

As a younger guy (25) I may be able to shed some light as to why, and I'm sure I'm speaking for a lot of the guys (and girls ) around my age or younger. We may be dumb at times, careless, at others, and fearless most of the time. Through all of that, we do see what we have, and we don't take it for granted. There is a lot at stake with messing with hunting and fishing laws, up to and including lifetime loss of privelages. Not something I'm cool with. I love the outdoors, and I love to hunt. If all I have to do is follow a few simple laws to guarantee that privelage to myself, then that's what has to be done. It's pointless to get busted (and most likely have to pay a fine) for something as stupid as a carcass tag, or forgetting to have your license with you. And I am not slamming anyone by any means, but with all due respect, the older guys, the ones that are in these DEC reports, are SUPPOSED to be role-models to us younger guys. Shame on you for setting a poor example.

Based on some of the info i've found, its most likely a Wards or Higgins. I have almost no question that its a Marlin 81 varient.. My question now: Everything I have found on the 81's has to deal with a serial number or model number of some sort. This gun has absolutely no engravings.. Was there a Marlin 81 variant that was completely naked as far as markings go? if anyone knows this, that could drastically help figure out exactly what gun it is. As much as I would like to try and use the Higgins for hunting, I'll probably stick with the 870. If I do find tubes for it, thats a different story. I just like to know what I have really. Not that I wouldn't shoot it, but I don't think I would ever make that my primary. Deer and red-squirrels get the AK-47 treatment, and pretty much anything else gets the .22. I rarely shotgun hunt as it is (not a big turkey hunter, though I see enough of them!) Thanks for the info though. If I ever decide to shoot it, its nice to know what it will fire safely. Would it be safe to attempt to fire a slug out of it? Or could I be putting myself in a dangerous situation by trying?

Read page 51 of this years hunting regulations book.. "hunting furbearers at night". If you are crouched next to a tree grunting or some crap an hour before sunrise with a loaded gun, yea, thats where discretion comes in. If you wait in the woods for an extra hour or two in hopes to take a yote, skunk, opossum, or fox, thats a bit different. Completely legal.

And here is a pic of the muzzle of the J.C. Higgins.. There are no choke designations stamped anywhere on the gun. This contraption on the end of the muzzle reads "J.C. Higgins Power Pac, Sears Roebuck & Co" Towards the reciever, the only things it says are: "J.C. Higgins Model 20-12GA" with the SN underneath and on the other side: "PROOF TESTED-12GA. 2-3/4" CHAMBER"

The bolt action on top is the gun in question. The scoped-semi on the bottom is a Marlin model 60. They are roughly the same size, give or take an inch. As I said, it has no markings at all.

I'll get one up in a few minutes. Left the camera in the truck, it's a little frozen haha! My shotgun is a pump. It has a switch on it to limit it to one round in the magazine i think.. Pretty neat. Again, i'm not sure what i can safely fire through it without a choke. It's smooth bore, so I'm assuming slugs would be ok? or is there something that screws on the end for those too??

A few years ago, when my grandfather passed away, my older brother and I, having grown up with "Grampa" inherited his gun-collection (minus the handguns. i'll have those as soon as I get my permit ha!). Older guns of course. One is a J.C. Higgins (Sears) 12-ga shotgun. I can't find chokes for that, but that's another post. Another is a Remington Model 4 Takedown. I'm not sure of the year of manufacture, but it's number 350,116 of approx 356,000 produced. The last gun I got, really stumped me. The .22 I had grown-up with, and hunted with the most as a kid, has ABSOLUTELY no engravings on it anywhere. I stripped the gun to check,, nothing!! No serial number, no make, no model, There isn't even a stamp on it to identify it as a .22LR. It's a wooden one piece stock, bolt-action with tube-fed magazine (holds like 17-rds). The trigger, receiver, barrel, everything is all one piece (minus the trigger guard) when taken apart. The only thing holding the barrel, etc, on the stock, is one screw about 6-inches forward of the trigger on the bottom side of the gun. Does anyone have the slightest clue as to what this thing is, or can tell me where to look??? Is it illegal because there is no serial number? (it's not filed or ground or anything like that, it still has the factory blue on it) Possibly a factory that mass produced a lot of "cheap" guns? Please help!!! Can post pics if needed PS.. Both 22's do shoot great ha! Never fired the shotgun though, i'm not sure what i can shoot out of it with no choke tube.

I'd much rather have a fox problem than a coyote problem.. Our vet lives less than 2 miles from me. Her dog (not sure of the breed, medium size, cocker-spaniel-ish) got taken out of her back yard, 15-yards from her back door while she was in the shower last spring. She said that she heard what was going on, looked out the window and saw 3-yotes tearing her dog apart. Nothing she could do obviously. I know that they are only doing what they're supposed to do, but I find them to be mangy, disgusting, vile creatures. I coyote hunt when i get the chance, and would never hesitate to dispatch one at any time. Would especially love to get one of those big black Alpha males running around this hillside.. In my opinion, the coyote should be classified as a pest, or unprotected. Theres at least 2-3 packs near my house almost every night. I don't think we have a shortage of them. Not to mention, their only real predator is man, and the few trappers we have I doubt will even put a dent in their population.

I did not know this.. My AK has a 1971 date stamp, and it came with a 30-round pre-ban mag. I can legally take the 30-rounder hunting? I know that you shouldn't ever need more than 5, but lets face it, an AK with a 5-round mag looks neutered!!!

Let's hope day 2 is better than day 1! Went out yesterday afternoon, trying to get to my spot. Jump out of the truck, throw my orange on, grab the rifle, and start heading in. I get 30 yards down by the creek, standing on a rock, I chamber a round. Go to take a step (the same damn stones ive been jumping across for 20 years!), and SPLASH!!!! Face first in a foot of what fell like glacier water.. No idea what happened, but i soaked myself, and my pride and joy of a weapon. I spent the last daylight hours yesterday tearing my gun apart, drying and oiling the best i could, and i had to leave my optics in front of a fan all night with the batteries out. Everything is together, works, etc. Got a late start to the morning, but trail-cam photos lead me to believe that my best chance for this moose-of a doe will be closer to 3-4 this afternoon. Ugh.. Here goes nothin!!

wow, i probably would've smashed his face with the butt of my gun (theoretically speaking, of course).. I'm quite positive that you need to pass a safety course to obtain a sporting license. And I'm also quite sure, gun safety is a huge part of that class!! I feel that those safety rules should be set to laws!! He fired a gun too close to you, and behind you, which is a serious no-no in my opinion. You mentioned your ears are still ringing.. You only get one set of ears, you can't replace or fix them. Ringing is a sign of permanent damage, or physical harm in other words... ASSAULT!! That guy should be fined and banned from that area.

I was unaware of chipmunks being legal to shoot. I've got tons of those things all over my strawberry patch and the gardens. They are a pain. I guess now, I'll be getting some practice with the .22! I'd use the AK, but the lawn's rough enough
