Legal hunting hours need revising
landothespikehorn replied to WhitetailAddict11's topic in Deer Hunting
Maybe im wrong and im sure someone would LOVE to point out that i am..... but i feel like they made the times the way they are because they know people are going to break it anyways. If it was first light to last light people would try and get away with no light which to me makes things much more dangerous. Atleast this way those who feel the urge to pull the trigger early and try and get away with it will most likely do it with some visibility. -
Sunrise was 657 opening day for me. Didnt see what time todays was but a clear day like today in a field i was able to see perfectly down any lane at 640 without any aid (scope, binos). First shot was at 635, understandable. However opening day shots started in at 618. I could only see 15 yds infront of me in the woods. Now that was a little crazy, deer must have been right on top of them lol. Weather and location play a big role in the amount of light available, if people were responsible/safe/knowledgable enough we wouldnt have so many bs laws. Not that the legal shooting hrs is one of those, i understand why we need it. i do feel it could use some revision though.

30-30 would be an ideal gun in my opinion, if your hunting the woods for the most part put a scout scope on it, or get look through rings and put a scope on it, then you can use your iron sights in the brush. i read somewhere the 30-30 has 11 ft.lbs of kick where as a 30-06 has 21, pretty easy on the shoulder. youll also be able to get another round off before any bolt action. thats what i use sometimes is a winchester 94AE 30-30, i put a scope on it and my point blank range is 250 yds with hornadys leverevolution. not going to find much longer of a shot in new york i wouldnt think.

grow---- ever think of using just one period and a comma here and there? just sayin, it might help people better understand what you are saying.

yes its a small handheld flashlight i use to walk in with. before i start my hike in ill scan the field for eyeballs lookin back at me so i know where not to walk, but on my hike in ill walk without it on. ill just flash it every so often to see where im at along hedgerows or among trees looking for my climber, and in doing so looking for eyeballs. if that falls under "locating" deer, guilty as charged every time i step off my porch or my running boards.

r700 300 win mag.... never have to buy another rifle again. will take down anything on the continent. aim for the shoulder on a deer and blow them off their feet. deadly, efficient and painless for the quarry. makes for easy tracking too!

stepped out of the truck to head across the field to my stand, saw 2 sets of eyes in the middle of the field just outside an island of brush in the center. beeped my horn and they slowly wandered off. i start walking i get to the island of brush, turn the corner spot the rest of the field with my light and right there infront of me 15 yds is a buck made for TV. he was enormous. g2s were all of 11 inches and his g3s werent far behind. he had great mass and spread. once in a lifetime buck for sure, one of those bucks where his rack looks too big for his head to hold up.... after a few explicit words and a slap to the face i finally made it to my stand. rest of the morning was great had 4 does come in, and then had a nice racked 8 point trottin through then a little 4 point made a few passes along the path of one of the does. she had to have been hot.

nice palmated rack right there, another year and hes a real brute

Glad i was in my stand on time. Just had 3 bucks on a good run hot on a doe gruntin like mad. One was making a howl sound never heard it before. Didnt stand a chance at getting a shot off. One was a decent 6 the other two were scrubs

saw some rut action tonight in my stand. had a nice 8 point come up behind me while a doe was 50yds downwind sniffing my scent.... led to believe she wasnt entirely spooked because she had wind of the buck as well?? well buck was 20yds to my left upwind of me, had to stand and turn around to shoot, i shoot lefty. in doing so he became a bit alert and slowly went back to where he came from. i grunted a few times and he began to circle around to my right just out of bow range right to the doe. the doe didnt move a muscle the entire time i was fidgeting around trying to get a shot on this buck. i was completely surprised! well the chasing began he had his nose to the ground and she was doin laps around the woods although never close enough to get a shot on him. was really cool to watch none the less. if i shot right handed this buck would have made it too easy to get a shot lol especially for what he was i would expect more from a deer! haha

congrats phade to you and your father in law, enjoyed reading your post!

as i was reading, i was thinking how the guy who shot the deer in the back leg isnt very bright for tracking it soon after he shot it, then you mention he is a hunter ed teacher!!?? WOW thats .... comforting. congrats on not giving up, it paid off!

2 pins. always been that way from the start. 1st pin is dead nuts to 35 yds before the arrow drops. 2nd pin is zeroed for 45, arrow only drops 5" at this distance when using 1st pin so when in doubt i use the 2nd pin and adjust to whatever i judge the distance to be.
